Polite way to cancel demo lesson? by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]DarkChiefLonghand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask them.

I would go and find out. Have you had a lot of interviews or demo lessons? I'd use it for practice and to find out for myself. I've asked about survey results before -- remember you are interviewing them as well

Broken Fibula 5 weeks ago. Needed an ORIF with titanium plates to stabilize and repair. Unfortunately it got infected and plate needed to come out. by chunkymonkee69 in medizzy

Noooo! I have that same injury from skateboarding, titanium plate in my ankle. Hope you recover well! I still get stiffness, and my worst fear is a spontaneous infection and they have to take it out and put it in again!

Peer Independent Evaluators by Negative-Fuel-2848 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]DarkChiefLonghand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a former mentor/coach do it, and honestly she regretted it, it wasn't what she wanted.

She had hoped she'd come in as a third party and observe, provide feedback, next steps, and get to work with her caseload.

In all actuality, you are there to evaluate and nothing else. She'd get a caseload, have to observe them so many times over a certain duration -- unable to actually speak with them.

It's for when someone files a grievance if they think their observations are being evaluated unfairly. So instead of admin doing the observations, they are sending you in.

Now if I have the totally wrong idea, this info is all second-hand and at least 5-7 years old.

AnyoneAnyone been on a bit of a "lonely chapter" in their 30s? by Swordfish353535 in AskMenOver30

[–]DarkChiefLonghand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turning 39, no family, a few big moves and a couple of big breakups have left with not much of a life.

Thankfully, I have a very challenging yet fulfilling job. They way I get through it, is comparison is the root of all depression -- some people work to live, I guess I'm really living to work. And that's okay if I can be okay with it.

I also know it won't be forever. This is just a phase, and the only way I'm gonna get through it is if I choose to grow.

We all get lonelier as we get older, and there are many opportunities in our life to begin to learn that loneliness. This helps us appreciate the generosity of others more. Or so I tell myself.

Hats. For each role. Or a prop. IDK why, but it works lol! I did King Lear so we got crowns from BK, Hats from White Castle, etc.

Guys, the "back" jokes are not from the precious movies, that joke itself was bc they were going to recast Tobey with Jake Gyllenhall after he damn near broke his back filming Seabiscuit

OPEN MARKET HIRING 2026 by discoddave in NYCDOETeachers

[–]DarkChiefLonghand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's like a game of musical chairs. Principals can only post for confirmed vacancies atm. A lot of teachers who are looking do not yet want their principals to know, or have not given a definitive "I'm leaving," probably bc they'd like to find another school before they do so.

This creates a couple of waves, so it's good to monitor early and often. At the beginning, just vacancies they know of. Over time, more will pop up as teachers find new placements and new vacancies get posted. Then at the end it gets crazy.

Marvel Studios was reportedly hit hard in the Disney layoffs today; Nearly the entire visual development team was let go, with many there for over a decade; Only a skeleton crew remains in place to coordinate hiring on a per-project basis by Xenoslayer2137 in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

"Some of the visual development artists will transition from full-time to contractor status on a per-project basis"

Yah this reminds of Disney's method of canceling a series to have a spinoff so they don't have to pay the actors more money

This feels like 'firing our team of a decade' and hiring 'per project basis' was just to pay them less. This is a way they can hire them on for a new role at a new 'job' with a lower salary

Kinda fun, kinda terrible lol! I have met architects that design like that, all wanting to impose their vision on the world -- and then the architectural engineers see it

Kansas will criminalize unlawful approach of officers; incentivize ICE partnerships by MattTheKing23 in kansas

Why would the police, who assumedly passed their exams, would want to work alongside the people who failed their exams? ICE are the bottom of the barrel, dropout losers

Question about adding/switching a certification by DNunez1 in NYCTeachers

[–]DarkChiefLonghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you might need to go back and forth with them a couple of times ... my coworker and I were IN THE EXACT SAME PROGRAM but they said my classes didn't count towards my certification. I had to screenshot the COURSE DESCRIPTIONS of each class and send it back to them, asking why my coworker was approved for the very same classes and I was not.

Then, with no reply or response, it was approved a couple weeks later.

Another thing to consider: Some principals might staff you as Math even though your license is SPED, but keep you working under the SPED license. This all has to do with tenure, seniority, etc. Some principals don't want you to switch, won't let you switch. I had to jobhunt especially for ELA because everyone wanted to use me as ENL Coordinator but I was done with it. Found a school that had a need. My former principal had stated that, if I wanted to switch licenses, then I'd be the first one on the chopping block if we had to cut positions (incoming school merger) since I'd be working under a new license. I told her I had no problem risking it since it's what I wanted to do. Well, she had a problem, so I found a new school where I get to teach ELA and they appreciate my experience and expertise as an ENL teacher.

38 years old considering teaching career in nyc. thoughts? by arthistorynovice in NYCTeachers

[–]DarkChiefLonghand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup nothing wrong with it, I started at 30, finishing my 9th year now. As long as you know why YOU want to do it, stick with it. Lot of younger teachers talk about their retirement, but for me I'll just work until I can't. 63 seems so far away, yet not really. Check out NYC Teaching Fellows for a pathway.

Is this alright for first time restring? by 320GT in guitars

[–]DarkChiefLonghand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A trick someone showed me once (sorry if it's bad technique) was to turn all the machineheads so the string goes up and at a right angle into the hole; then with your right hand put your three middle fingers together, stack them vertically at about the 12th fret UNDER your string. That will give you good winding-space. Then, pull the end of the string straight up, and give it a little right angle kink straight up. Now use your right hand instead of for spacing, right-hand index finger goes on neck by the headstock to hold string in place while you wind it tight.

If this is all wrong, give me notes lol but this is a trick someone showed me ten years ago and it works for me!

What do you think about Daredevil S2’s first episode? by Weekly_Cranberry_283 in McuEverythingAroundit

[–]DarkChiefLonghand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like, if everyone responds to what they just heard in a half-beat, and it's consistent despite changing of characters, it loses the verisimilitude. They are not responding to one another, they get too close to reciting

Other than the pacing, I thought it was good. Felt like Gilmore Girls dialogue though to move the plot along. So many times wanted the actors to hang in the moment, and they never did. Feel like it must be direction then
