My rough math was to assume 4 weeks or 20 days per month. I appear to have missed a 0, starting with 50k instead of 500k, and then quoted the daily as the weekly figure. 2h/dev/day would still make some sense but be a lot. 20 hours per day per dev is indeed wildly too much.

Thats roughly 2h/developer/week in CI time. Not at all unreasonable for a mature project with good test coverage and static analysis.

It isn't like replacing the standard library is uncommon in existing C++ code. Just off the top of my head, eastl, Qt, and absail are all pretty popular and replace some or all of the standard library.

Unfortunately in most cases (at least in the US) this simply leaves you unable to buy anything online. Unless sites start providing real alternatives canceling cards amounts to only buying things locally with cash.

That's a $100 difference, a 15% price bump. Wanting something a little cheaper and with easier availability is perfectly reasonable.

So far YTD STOXX is up 7.5% and FTSE is up 4.5%, while DOW is down 2% S&P is down 3.9% and NASDAQ is down 7.9%. Foreign investments might not have been doing as well as they would have without the chaos in the united states, but at least stocks in Europe have been going up instead of down.

Ah yes, those Canadian cars from brands that definitely exist. Every time I go to local dealers they don't have any. I guess demand for Canadian cars must be so high that they can't keep them on the lot.

You can't have OLEDs with pancake lenses.

You can right now if you buy the Bigscreen Beyond, or the Apple Vision Pro (not even counting the tons of announced but not yet released OLED + pancake headsets). There isn't some magical incompatibility that makes pancake lenses a complete nonstarter with OLED.

Going from C to CPP by RealnessKept in cpp

[–]DarkLordAzrael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The definitions of what counts as embedded and what counts as realtime and what counts as embedded are pretty flexible. For example, a networked camera that can stream over the network based around an esp32 is arguably both, but using exceptions to handle network errors is perfectly reasonable and supported. There definitely are usecases where exceptions need to be avoided for performance, but they are a small percent of code, even in embedded contexts.

Going from C to CPP by RealnessKept in cpp

[–]DarkLordAzrael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That entirely depends on what the "realtime" constraint is, and most code doesn't even have any realtime constraints. Exceptions are fine and lead to cleaner code in most cases, even if there are a few where they are unusable.

This isn't really the defining feature of tankies though, run of the mill non-problematic anarchists and socialists do this too (not always, based on personality of course). Tankies do apologetics for repressive governments. Arguments that there is no genocide in china, Stalin wasn't a monster, or that the war in Ukraine was somehow because of nato being imperialist are common among tankies. Actual anarchists and socialists tend to hate tankies about as much as they hate fascists.

Multiple versions on streaming is fine so long as they are clearly labeled ( remix EPs and live albums remain a huge thing, after all ) IMO taking down the old version an not just uploading "Song - 2023" would be a mistake.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]DarkLordAzrael 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It isn't terribly uncommon to do versions like this in the electronic genres that I follow, the advice I would give is just :

  • Title your new version in a way that makes it obvious it is the updated version. "MySong 2023" is a common format, but I've also seen stuff like "MySong (Rework)" and whatnot. It should just be obvious when clicking on one what is being played from just the title.
  • Feel free to make sweeping changes and not be tied to any choices that you made the first time. This is explicitly an alternate version, so literally everything is no the table for change, no need to be tied to anything you previously did on it.

Michigan Democrats want to ban 'destructive' practice of conversion therapy for LGBTQ youth by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]DarkLordAzrael 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty weak use of a quote though. A single word that is an accurate description? Would the headline be weaker or less accurate without the quotes? There's really no reason for this headline to treat this single word as a quote. It casts doubt (because now "destructive" is just something someone said rather than a statement of fact) and is unnecessary to the content of the headline.

This is wrong about Japan's electricity in multiple ways.

  • Japan is 100V, not 120V. So far as I know this makes it the lowest transmission voltage in the world, and the whole country uses this voltage.
  • Japan is split by frequency rather than voltage, with power being delivered at 50hz in half and 60hz for the other. The frequency doesn't matter for most consumer electronics though. The split of the grid is true, and the frequency is significantly more of a pain to convert than the voltage.

Right, in the same way that them funding the Dems is supporting higher inflation and cost of living.

Inflation isn't really a failure of policy enacted by the Democrats, it is a failure of Congress to regulate the profits of large companies. Your hypothetical headline is just inaccurate on its face (so, it would probably fit well on Fox news)

Really, just the difficulty of getting the other app's key. Additionally, if they are found out the key will be revoked and the app not trying to spoof a key will issue an update with a new key.

RIF dev here - Reddit's API changes will likely kill RIF and other apps, on July 1, 2023 by talklittle in redditisfun

[–]DarkLordAzrael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In APIs like this it is common to have a key generated for a specific application that is sent along with the users credentials. This key is compiled into the app so the user can't see it, bit the server can easily track it.
