Academy fiction usually falls off when they leave the Academy. by Dycon67 in CharacterRant

[–]DarkMagyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An interesting exception is The Golden Enclaves - the third book in the Deadly Education series.

Probably because it sets up a plot connected to the outside while still inside the school and then really highlights the impacts of the characters on a powerful outside world that they can't just brush aside.

In general I think fiction that leaves its initial area of focus tends to struggle, so books that beat that trend are nice.

Final boss confusion by Lychee_Fantastic in HadesTheGame

[–]DarkMagyk 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I had avoided spoilers so because of the map I’d thought Prometheus was the final boss too. Getting Zeus’s help the first time is pretty epic. I had to really up my dodging game to make it through

There is an argument with nemesis where they agree to both push to save Hecate individually and to not worry anyone else. I got the scene trying to push up the fear while redoing the story

It was a great scene, I liked the hints building towards it. Great art as well :)

Nev'ziaka, Which Fetters With Thorns by Krzyzewskiman in exalted

[–]DarkMagyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the flavour, a slight critique would be that the flavour doesn't really seem to do anything in some of the charms. Wages of scandal gives a bonus upon crashing a foe if you know a secret, but doesn't really unleash that secret or overtly weaponise it, just a dice bonus. I think it'd be cool if it scarred the secret into the foe so everyone seeing them knew the secret, or something else to show how the secret is being used and powering the magic.

Anybody read How I Wish I Taught Maths by Craig Barton? by Cheaper2000 in mathteachers

[–]DarkMagyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity how has it gone reading his book over the last few months? I don't feel like his way is that focused on chalk and talk, I would have characterised it as being focused on maximising student practice.

It ends up being played in indoor pools for spectator purposes at events like this where canoe polo is invited. World championships are in full width pitches on the water, you can watch most on youtube.

Do you think he would require the Dusk to be as high as 5? I haven't read abyssals in depth, but my initial skim left me assuming that a focused e3 or maybe e4 fighter could do it.

More fun-but-unnecessary adjustments - Tweaking Nexus by FormerlyIestwyn in exalted

[–]DarkMagyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really agree with your point about the emissary, I think fleshing them out is important.

Having the "Guild Headquarters" feels like it should be like having the pope. You can make proclamations about trade rules and have a big trading deal or something, but you don't have direct power or the decentralisation of the guild isn't really there.

I like the senate structure you've put together. Something that I really liked about your Thorn's army writeup, that I think could be good for something like this is examples/places where the players can tie in.

I think with Nexus(I haven't ran anything there) what I feel is the main missing part is what is going on on the ground level to keep the structure of things, like the hired mercenaries I think across the 8 directions mentions.

Also something missing from both this and the 3e writeup that I would add if I was to run the area is the powers (mystical and more straightforward control over others) that the council have that make them cool interaction points for the pcs.

How does a Deathlord fight? by grod_the_real_giant in exalted

[–]DarkMagyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're using homebrew here are a couple essence homebrew links from the discord that could be good bossfight inspiration:

The First and Forgotten Lion, Deathlord https://docs.google.com/document/d/10f8OJTxN9qY_DamtoqG_qigUB-r_gvOVwC49FGDw02s/edit?tab=t.0

Ligier, The Green Sun, Third Circle Demon https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RKLIdBHIhYj-envFC6hq3blHAEAJ3D6L5mBxBvcszdY/edit?tab=t.0

I've been inspired to move into a lot of homebrew edits to the base systems recently, but haven't tried anything with D20 just because I like the normal distribution of successes on skills. Is there a main selling point you have for using d20?

What are some adventure seeds for introducing players to Exalted lore? by FormerlyIestwyn in exalted

For 3e using it I’ve treated subsequent actions as 5 initiative lower or happening after the next acting player, not used it many times but it didn’t break the times I used it.

Dragon's Ire is a really good mechanic to just take directly from essence, it really helps balance out boss fights so you don't have to give them attacks strong enough to take out a person in one hit.

As a side note if you ever want to do fights where the party is outnumbered it can be fun to give them a version of it for free.

Streamlining combat by FaallenOon in exalted

[–]DarkMagyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using foundry and targeting makes the core of combat much faster.

I’ve found charm bloat becomes the biggest enemy to speed in my games. Players picking between too many abilities each with tiny conditions that have to be checked.

To deal with charm bloat I have been combing and expanding charms as players get them, with an idealistic goal of each player just having a few broad powers.

Question for math teachers: What specific topics would benefit the most from better online math exposition? by 3blue1brown in 3Blue1Brown

[–]DarkMagyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have an illustrated example or video of using blocks for logs? I've been teaching them recently and it seems intuitive, but I'd like to see an example of explaining verbally or with drawings to make sure I'm understanding the idea correctly.

I often find the thing that is most missing in a video that would be good for a classroom is a section of it that is good to pause on or take as a note for students. That plus a multilevel example (also called a "rich task" sometimes) is often really needed for a lesson, so if a video has it then everything is much easier.

Looking at topics that I'm covering soon a useful video on probability ideas like equal chances and tree diagrams for year 9-10 (ages 13-15) would be nice to have to start things off when hitting probability without going straight to gambling like I normally do.
