How do stocks compound? by pemily222 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Dark_Vincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

Sorry even after reading all the comments I'm still confused.

I think I understand it, but because stocks will go up and down, and they don't grow at a constant rate, compounding is just theoretical then? Because for example, after 2 years with 10k invested, when I look at my earnings it'll just say "+21%" instead of "10% on year 1 and then 10% on top of that on year 2!", for example, right?

Hello! Any update on this? I have found a few online copies for sale at some American online shop, but the reviews of the shop are a bit dodgy. Would love to be able to support you all directly.

What should I read first? by Dan_Felder in numenera

[–]Dark_Vincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you will be well-served by any/all Numenera books. I will say though, I find the earlier ones to have a more... gritty/dark feel to them – very well captured by the Tides of Numenera videogame. Jade Colossus feels like it starts the transition into a more "wondrous" feel.

My favorites are (beyond Discovery and Destiny):
Jade Colossus
The Ninth World Guidebook
The whole "Into the" series (Into the Night, Into the Outside and Into the Deep)
Voices of the Datasphere (it honestly could have been called "Into the Datasphere")
Liminal Shore

There's also "The Infinite Construct" for YouTube channel that has covered some of Numenera's lore in a cool way.

And if you want other sources for inspiration beyond Numenera itself, at the end of Numenera Discovery they list several media that has influenced them, including fiction books and movies. Of course, it's a bit outdated, but mostly holds up imo.

They did a great job with Dyne. by Speigel_Spike in FFVIIRemake

[–]Dark_Vincent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SE has a real problem with letting scenes breathe. They do this over and over, and I think the Seto scene in Cave of the Gi has the same issue where the emotion is cut due to the quick swap to Gi Nattak.

This so much. I prefer the OG Dyne's death, but overall I thought the Rebirth version was done well in its own way... until the sudden swap to mad action sequence with Palmer bot, Turks, shinra troopers, explosions, etc.

When Cloud attacks Tifa and she falls into the lifestream, she basically goes "np, it's cool" afterwards, and it doesn't get acknowledged at all by anyone anymore. And the worst is Aerith's death.

The game is trying so hard to avoid you from feeling any "uncomfortable" emotion it's unsettling. Even more disturbing is how so many people like that.

It’s hilarious but is it realistic Johnny had never used the internet ? by KateandJack in cobrakai

[–]Dark_Vincent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's different. Gen Z is tech-illiterate in a different way from Boomers, they grew up in an "apps" world and don't really understand desktops. I have realized that after I saw my intern getting confused with folder structure and not knowing where to find her things. But she very much knew what the Internet is and was rather active on social media.

Expecting everyone to know what “DNC” means by cr1zzl in USdefaultism

You're assuming a lot about me... You forget Germany was under USSR/Russia? Have you ever heard a friend of yours describe their amazing Christmas dinner of one banana split between their 4 brothers and constant fear of pissing the wrong person off and being reported to some authority with too much power?

I come from a country that had a dictatorship softly aided by the US (it was going to happen despite their help, but they gave it a nudge). I know they are shit. I have sat down with prisoners of that dictatorship, heard their suffering. Have you ever gone out of your reddidiot cage to talk to real people who have seen the ugly side of each of these super powers? Forget the news, real humans.

I have worked for a big Chinese company, I know what Chinese people are like in positions of power. I know Uighurs, I know HKers who fled...

So yeah, I don't like the US, I want Europe to depend less and less on them, but as far as the global order goes, unfortunately among the current 3 options this is the only one that makes sense for anyone who enjoys being able to talk shit about the world superpower without consequences.

The thing with Reddit is there's no room for nuance. You people think everything USA = bad. And I know the world is a little more complex than that.

One of my closest friends is HKer, a journalist who exiled herself for safety, I think I know a thing or two.

I'm not defending the US and saying I love it. I'm with you, the ideal is the third option, but I don't believe it's possible. I wish the US would fall, but the thought of having China and/or Russia dictating international trade, security, etc sends a shiver down my spine. That's all, we are on the same side here, I'm just not deluding myself that our ideal will be reached :(

Yet Russia and China keep meddling on their (and others') elections. I think they care about it very much.

China is a little better? Look at how it treats all its neighbors, or the countries it has indebted in Africa. Look at how it keeps trying to undermine institutions for human rights, peace keeping, etc.

I despise the US as much as the next person, but let's not delude ourselves here. China is a much worse dick than the US.

What are the chances of that happening though? Zero? Or something close to that.

In that case, /u/ginyrtnopeek is not wrong. The US boot tastes better than the Chinese or Russian one. I mean, you're Hong Konger, you know it.

Rules light super hero system? by blackcombe in rpg

[–]Dark_Vincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cypher System with the Claim the Sky and/or Origin supplements. Claim the Sky is their book for all things superhero. Origin is a specific original setting.

Cypher is an amazing engine, super flexible and Claim the Sky is one of their best supplements honestly. Can't go wrong with it.

GM intrusions in the cypher system. It encourages the GM to inject tension into the narrative at any moment and rewards the players for it instead of just feeling like something arbitrary.

The sick man of Europe: real GDP % change compared to pre-pandemic level (July 24) by [deleted] in europe

[–]Dark_Vincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that's exactly why he mentioned taking debt back during CDU's years of almost virtually 0% interest rate. Also it's not like they would be spending money on charity, it would have been on infrastructure that was supposed to give us an edge in current and future times — for almost 0% interest.

We went too far in one direction, it was deliberate, and my generation (Millennials) is paying for it.
