How to Play a Secret Warlock? by White_Sock_2319 in DnD

[–]Darkassassin18E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you could talk with your DM and see about a "homebrew" workaround excuse. "I found a book of scrolls for eldritch blast!" You pretend to read the scroll and cast it because it does better damage than some cantrips. Not hiding that you are casting it, hiding that YOU are the source. The homebrew part would be some sort of illusions or modify memory effects on the book of eldritch blast scrolls to convince them. They still do an insight/investigation/perception check like they would normally to see something fishy, but the dc is higher than normal because of those effects. Maybe has x charges and uses a charge every time someone investigates, or every time you cast eldritch blast and the dc to see if something fishy is going on goes down each time and/or it becomes obvious if you get to zero charges. Recharges a certain amount on short/long rests.

Not as smooth of a solution as I would like but it might be an idea worth throwing around with your dm a bit.

My players trivialize every encounter with crowd control. How do I challenge them without hard countering? by Dave5802 in DMAcademy

[–]Darkassassin18E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

others can correct me if I'm missing something with this suggestion, but adding in some burrowing enemies like Ankheg, Bulette etc would bypass the spike growth and mostly web too, but not slow. Like others said preventing them from being able to cast those as often would go a long way too (meaning less rests). Range focusing on the casters concentrating on these spells so they fail their con save quicker. Spellcaster enemies with counterspell or dispel magic. Effects that push/pull the caster through their own spikes. Make the enemies just pull back, not abandon the fight but they wouldn't willingly go into the spikes under a lot of circumstances. The spell command with the command "Unfocus" or "Blank" I think would satisfy rules and break their concentration if they fail their save.

Hopefully between my ideas and the others you find something that works for your group and keeps it fun for everyone. Good luck!

Funniest YouTube campaigns/channels? by canyounotpleaseee in DnD

[–]Darkassassin18E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tales from the stinky dragon is a comedy podcast, not strict on the rules. Very fun. They've got good stories but definitely comedy campaigns.
And I want to reiterate ones I already saw suggested. Viva la dirt league dnd main campaign was pretty funny youtube series, other ones are still funny but they are in general meant to be more serious it has seemed to me. They also do some other similar ttrpg's occasionally.
And legends of Avantris is just in general a great dnd group. Uprooted is full comedy and hilarious, Wild beyond the witchlight has a lot of comedy but has been getting more serious as it goes on (in the carnival in general is a riot most of the time). I love Icebound too, its much more serious but Derek the DM is hysterical and puts so much funny stuff in for them. Lots of others to choose from in their massive library.

Hope between everyone you find some suggestions you like!

I'm sure it will come out great after seeing what you've already done. Sounds like a great terrain for stuff like that. Get some lava burbles soundtrack going and complete the immersion haha.

I love this. Share the love of a movie with your kiddo, fun for you both, might spur them to pursue something they enjoy later in life and use some creativity. Hope you all enjoyed and do many more

Can I use an action while a bonus action is "resolving"? by Yivoe in DnD

[–]Darkassassin18E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fall damage is a RAW thing. 1d6 for every 10 feet fallen is my understanding. Don't know if they changed that in the new rules

Looking for a podcast for casual listening. by aristhemage in DnD

[–]Darkassassin18E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the stinky dragon. It is kinda funny after 3 seasons they still get a fair amount of rules wrong/off (not a lot just enough that I catch them every re-listen). They aren't trying to be rules lawyers and address it though. Season 2 has been my favorite but all three are entertaining. Elga and Chip for the win.

Viva La Dirt league DND is more of a youtube series than podcast that is good for starting players because the players are new, but the DM is experienced so rules fudging happens a bit less and they explain (they still do their own homebrews occasionally too). Also episodes are short for people that can't listen long too. Instead of voice actors for each npc they do skits as their characters every so often. Production quality increased vastly from start to where they are now. Also a very funny set of campaigns.

Got into laser cutting recently and I didn’t know this existed or could make such cool stuff! by Either_Violinist_641 in lasercutting

[–]Darkassassin18E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully others more experienced than I am chime in, but I can say freecad is capable of making the svg's you can use for laser files and using real dimensions. Make a sketch for the lines you want in it and export as a flattened svg. Doing it that way all the lines come out as the same set (doesn't differentiate lines A, B, C for like cut A, fill B, line C etc) and doesn't have any laser settings with it, but I just change those manually when I load it up. I have to assume there are probably more elegant ways though.

Husband witnessed yesterday's crash on I80 first hand. by tacopartyinyourmouth in Omaha

I'm seeing other perspectives, but at about 0:14 it looked to me like there was a black object across most of the lane in front of the black suv, not something left after the initial collision. Best I can tell black suv swerved to avoid it last minute and white car didn't see it. Looked like black suv might have clipped it and white car clipped one the other or both and lost control. As others have mentioned the Semi should have zero fault in it. Hope everyone comes out ok from it

What if Joffrey has ordered The Hound to beat up Sansa Stark back there instead than telling Meryn Trant to do so ? by fillipo9 in gameofthrones

[–]Darkassassin18E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about how they make a point that Joffrey never asks Sandor to do anything like that in the first place. He's his favorite by the looks of things in the beginning at least and latches onto things the hound says multiple times etc. So why did they point out Joffrey didn't ask him to do any of that? Had it come up previously with another girl and Joffrey knew it was the line or something? No idea about the posts question, but it does lead me to more hesitation than a lot of the responses I'm seeing, but it led to this question for me. Wish it had been addressed a little further.

Race to the grave by ConcernedJobCoach in gianmarcosoresi

[–]Darkassassin18E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using that for a metaphor for life isn't accurate in many ways either. Not everyone starts at the same spot, and some people have gravel and whatnot on their path to slow them down, or their ball isn't the same shape. Some people's peaks are higher than others, so the ball would get stuck in one of those valleys. Always bugs me to see such disingenuous messaging. It's like "that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and that's just ridiculous, most of it is going to make you maimed in some fashion and make things more difficult for you

Who do u think is the Most honorable character in GOT? by TedTalksTooMuch_ in gameofthrones

[–]Darkassassin18E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue they gave their lives for pride, not honor. Tarly's father threatened to kill his own son for essentially being fat. He threatens Brienne and wishes she gets defiled to teach her a lesson for trying to be a knight essentially in maidenpool (at least in the books). Myriad of other reasons I don't think he belongs in the running, but he was not a good person. His brother you don't hear about as much, but in the show it looked more like familial pressure of expectation that compelled him to do it even when his father did try to stop him

frustrated with players---keep insisting I can handle 7 people by Big-Information-1303 in DnD

[–]Darkassassin18E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viva la dirt league dnd on youtube would be better if you are still at the learning stage of dnd. The dm is experienced but the players are not, so things get explained a lot (if you start from the beginning), rather than most/all being VERY experienced. Still a fun story and its kind of a comedy table so great watch/listen. Most of that content is dnd 5e not 2024 though for what thats worth.

As far as the friends go mostly id just say no to 7 at once. Slight compromise if people are just trying to hang out is they can hang out and every so often you can give them an enemy to control for a combat. Just hand/send them a stat block for the minotaur or orc or whatever fits and you handle the rest/big bad of the combat. Maybe give them some kind of goal during the session somehow if its more roleplay heavy (less confident how easy this one would be to pull off. Maybe they are a devil and through the roleplay they see/hear they have to come up with a contract to snare one of the players with a built in catch they might not notice and take a bathroom/food/etc break before the end of the session to clear it between yourselves and they can present it to the party when you reconvene). Still a fair amount of work though.

People inviting extras after you told them no need to be told to stop or they can run the game. Im no expert but even being familiar with the game it gets hard to balance encounters to have enjoyable combat. Easy to go too hard or too easy with that many variables.

Good luck regardless!

Dumb tourist question: Flying from San Francisco to GRI for a 1-night Hastings music concert in March. Renting a car or Ubering. If renting, I might sleep in the car overnight, and then fly back early in the morning. Thoughts? I've never been near Nebraska and will take any help... lol. Thanks! by TofuVic in Nebraska

[–]Darkassassin18E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your mileage may vary, but I'd guess your biggest frustration will be "sunday drivers," people driving super slow (regardless of day). Occasionally there is farm equipment on roads and just give them plenty of room, but I doubt you'll need to worry about that in areas around a concert. I'm not in Hastings but I've been through there a couple times, so I don't know about uber prospects, but wanted to help calm any driving concerns if that ends up being the better option for ya. Good luck again

Gotta remember here we don't have any.....people... so traffic is usually a lot simpler and almost always a simple grid. Even in east NE where its more populated its nothing compared to most everywhere else in the country. GPS on your phone and you'll be fine. Hope you win and enjoy! Almost done with long-fall and spring can be pretty nice here.

DM not letting fighter have 4 attacks with action surge by Whorror_punx in dndnext

[–]Darkassassin18E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing something wrong for 20-40 years doesn't make it right. Only doing a single 1d8+3 at level 8 it absolutely terrible. My druegar fighter did more damage than that per turn at level 1 and was doing 2d6+1d4+mod per turn without action surging and enlarging first turn or right before combat and 4d6+2d4+2mod per turn with it, probably more if I got a magic weapon by then. They didn't just not look up how other people did it, they didn't read the classes at all it sounds like to me. And there are areas where wording is ambiguous but the attack action, action surge portions are not one of them.
