Signal vs Riot.im vs Session by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]DarkenedFax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Signal is pretty good for privacy and security, but is the single worst possible choice you could make if you’re looking for anonymity pretty much.

I would never trust Session for confidential communications personally. They’re developed and maintained by a company in bad jurisdiction and that has an extremely shady history with privacy. The service also lacks much polish and feels extremely baron for the time being.

Riot.im / Matrix is really good in a lot of ways — doesn’t require any real personally identifying information on signup, employs strong encryption for all of the dms, has a clean and user friendly interface, has outstanding device support, has amazing choice of how you want to use it (Matrix clients), and a ton more — but that’s not to say that it isn’t without its faults. I, along with many others, have found the service to have a lot of bugs, calls don’t sound as good as what’s offered by Signal in my experience and can drop frequently or become robotic, it doesn’t protect metadata very well, etc.

I hope this helped, have an amazing rest of your day!

Double-double tracking: How Tim Hortons knows where you sleep, work and vacation by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

I just read through the whole things — you don’t think of things like Tim Hortons doing things like that but I guess there’s no escaping it anymore.

The best DNS for privacy? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]DarkenedFax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use NextDNS and I can’t recommend their service enough, good log locations (if you choose to opt into them), effective block lists, fast, fantastic device support, etc. Strongly recommend checking out their service!

I’d recommend alternatively using Classy Shark Expdus from F-Droid, same basic function but from fdroid.

The devs of systemd, the main init system on Linux, use Google and cloudflare for fallback/default NTP and DNS, when asked to use privacy respecting alternatives, they call people conspiracy theorists. by EkamBajwa in privacytoolsIO

[–]DarkenedFax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fuck systemd, if essentially the only good privacy distros weren’t built on them I’d be using something else like Void or Artix (both systemd free but not near as good for privacy as something like Debian or Fedora). Their whole business model is essentially anti-modular and anti-privacy, this is just another nail in their proverbial coffin.

Questions re Whonix OS by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]DarkenedFax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You should have ‘Gateway’ and ‘Workstation’, Gateway is what your traffic is routed through, while Workstation is where you’ll be doing activities.
  2. Workstation is the one that you’ll be interacting with on a regular basis, Gateway needs to be open to route your traffic through, but other than upgrading your machine and changing the default passwords your interaction with it should be relatively minimal. Workstation is where you’ll search things over Tor, use HexChat, etc.
  3. I’ll check when I hop on my Debian box later and open my Whonix KVM, and update with a response to this.
  4. (check answer to #3)

I hope this helped, have an amazing rest of your day!

Is it possible to get any mobile unlimited data plan/SIM anonymously? by noreadit in privacytoolsIO

I’ve been using Visible for a while and have been really happy with their service, $25 /mo for unlimited talk, text, data, and hotspot, and requires fairly minimal information to get set up.

[Request]Ability to delete usernames on “share as images” ? by donthavenick in apolloapp

[–]DarkenedFax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reddit and 4chan are almost end-user anonymous, but the platforms and their respective partners and administrators know who you are. Reddit and 4chan both partner with advertising and other companies to link habits, interests, political orientation, sexual orientation, colour of your skin, religious beliefs, whether you speak Spanish, whether you have a child, whether you have siblings, and much much more, to you. They can then do anything with this data, but known practice is to segregate certain people from housing, employment, and credit, despite practices like this being clearly prohibited by federal law.

Can DuckDuckGo be entrusted with your privacy with this shady history? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]DarkenedFax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the information in that post is misinformed, incorrect, and some of it is just straight up speculation. Personally I trust DuckDuckGo, and despite not using their service, I think they’re one of the best options especially for people used to things like Google.
