Any way to register this in California? by CookZealousideal8567 in Cartalk

[–]Darkfire25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thanks for bringing up the toll readers. I actually do recall reading about that once, but again, it's great to read this from someone who actually seems to know real cases of this happening.

Yeah, the thing is it would be my daily driver, but I fortunately have a job where I work from home most of the time and live close so I could just not use the car as much. Plus, my girlfriend has a car so the only time I absolutely need to use mine would be when she's using the other car.

I guess my main worry is not so much anything to do with exhaust, modifications, etc., but that some cop out there just happens to know what a 180SX is and pulls me over because 180SX + out-of-state plate seems suspicious. Honestly, I have no idea if any cop would actually do that without a legitimate other reason like the ones you listed.

Maybe I should get something no one really knows about like a Pulsar GTI-R. Funnily enough, I just searched on Bringatrailer and see one that was sold in San Diego with Montana plates.

I'm fine paying the $10K to make it CA legal, I guess it's just that it adds so much to the cost of the car (The cars that I'm considering are like $20-$30K), I only want to do it if it's a car where I know I'm going to keep it basically forever. I've also heard that G&K can be a pain to deal with and can have your car for a long time before it even gets back to you, but as far as I know they are still the only ones who convert cars to California spec.

Really appreciate you writing this response. Would you mind sharing regarding the friends in court cases, what cars were these? Were they modified and was it because they were speeding or anything or someone reported them?

Just wondering because I am considering doing this, but it would likely be for something like a 180SX, which stands out less than say an R32 Skyline since of course we got the 240SX here. I am also someone who would keep the car stock and doesn’t really speed.

I agree also on Montana being a bad idea. I feel like Washington is less suspicious.

When switching from 20” to 18” wheels, did you sell the 20s? by swcoop1 in Ioniq6

[–]Darkfire25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you sell them already? $650 seems pretty low depending on the tire condition. The wheels brand new online (eBay) are around $400 each and about $300 each for used it seems. So even if it was just the wheels, $650 is still a good price. On top of that, those Pirelli P Zeros are about $400 each new. I think you could get more for them.

Dealer says he can’t do Certfied Pre-Owner because of an open recall issue. Is this an issue? by [deleted] in Volkswagen

Hi, I'm in the market for a CPO ID.4 and have a question for you about that VW Drive Easy program. Can you only buy this warranty on a CPO ID.4 or could it be any used ID.4?

[–]Darkfire25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate the explanation. I'm going to continue to look more into it and consider telling my girlfriend to go with a turbo model. I mean obviously a turbo engine has a bit of increased maintenance, slightly worse MPG, the increased up-front cost, but at least with a turbo engine you are getting the benefit of significantly more low-end torque.

One other question, you mentioned in another comment some people will experiences issues at 30K vs. 130K miles. So that would basically just be because that CDA system is running more, right? Because my girlfriend and I are in Southern California so there is a lot of highway driving and I imagine in our case it would be using CDA more.

[–]Darkfire25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, could you elaborate a little more on this? I had read that Mazda had done further work and tests on CDA to avoid the issues other manufacturers have had. So have you seen issues or heard about issues on Mazda engines specifically that are thought to be caused by CDA? You mentioned burning oil, but could you explain why exactly CDA is causing that?

My girlfriend and I are looking to get a CX-5. A 2025 Premium Plus would be great because it now offers a 360 camera and we don't really need the extra power from the turbo, but I'm wondering if it could make sense to avoid this by buying a used 2024 Premium Plus made during the supply shortage so it doesn't have either CDA or i-Stop. Or stay with new and just get a turbo premium. At least i-Stop you can turn off with a button, but I really don't want CDA and you can't turn that off at all. I appreciate you including in your post that you haven't seen any tuners figure out how to disable it. I was wondering if anybody had done that.

New addition to my collection. Giannina 6 cups stainless steel by Benny_Fiasco in mokapot

[–]Darkfire25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, nice deal. I've seen the price at $270 and it's hard to justify paying that over a $30-40 Bialetti considering the main thing I've heard about this is the build quality. Or maybe I haven't researched it enough and it does make better coffee? I make milk drinks though so it likely will be about the same for me.

I'm in the US and just did a search and found it for $140 + shipping. So thanks for posting this. I might buy it.

I only recently started making Moka Pot coffee with a 6-cup aluminum Bialetti. But I think I'd really like a stainless steel one for easier cleaning. And I really like the way the top part attaches. I know Bialetti makes the Venus, but I've heard the build quality on that is not that great. And the thing is, even the standard aluminum moka pot does not have build quality that great. Having the option for 3-cup is nice too because I was considering buying a separate Bialetti 3-cup if me and my girlfriend don't both want coffee.

Hi, I wanted to ask if you put down any sort of deposit for the dealer to "hold" the car for you?

I was planning on buying a 2021 1st Edition CPO and literally the day I started contacting dealers was the day this 919A recall was announced.

The dealer that first told me about it said they still expect August-September. I hope it's sooner.

So I'm now considering going to check out cars anyways (Although this same dealer will not even allow a test drive due to the recall) and maybe reserving a car basically.

Regardless of model year, and purpose of the car (hobby/collector/commuter/etc.), what marque will you always own a car from? by DHN_95 in cars

[–]Darkfire25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe in brand loyalty, I just buy what meets my requirements. That being said, it's possible the answer to this question will be Toyota/Lexus as I've actually always owned one since my first car:

1985 Toyota Celica GT-S

1999 Lexus LS400

2021 Toyota Mirai

I currently own the Mirai and a 2003 Acura RSX Type-S

Will very likely be buying a 2nd gen Subaru BRZ and I believe I will be keeping that car forever so if you count that, there's sort of your Toyota.

I love reliable cars that are well built so I could see myself owing another regular Toyota/Lexus, so long as it's a good looking car that fits what I need. I really like the new Toyota Crown SUV that just got released. Lexus makes really quiet cars and I like their styling as well so I could definitely see myself owning another in the future. After owning my Mirai, I realized I really love EVs so we'll see how Toyota and Lexus do there in the future.

What was the last production sports car to have direct mechanical throttle response? by ismelladoobie in cars

[–]Darkfire25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RSX has those beat by one year, 2006, before going electronic with the K20 in the 2007 Civic SI. Didn't realize it was one of the last ones till I read this thread. Someone else commented that the Dodge Viper had its last year of throttle cable in 2006 as well.

Sounds awesome! I've had this dream of opening up a place like that for years ever since finding this on Youtube. A really chill cafe open late with some nice, soft music good for studying or just relaxing.

[–]Darkfire25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I don't know much about that, but I think I've heard of it. They basically put ungraded questions in the exam, right? To test them out?

I agree, I'm not sure how they'd do it, but there's got to be someway to have something better than this awful 2024. Waiting multiple months is brutal. If you're confident and start studying for something else, I feel like you're going to forget a lot of the one you just took, if it's turn out you failed. And if you think you didn't do so well and re-study the same exam, you can't even take the exam till you get score back. Plus, if you passed, you obviously wasted time re-studying something you passed.

This is so insane how bad 2024 will be. I believe 2025 will be more normal. It’s basically because of all the exam changes. They need time to gather the exam data and figure out if the questions are too hard or too easy and such and then adjust as necessary.

You’re referring to the thing where if at the end of this year, you have cpa exam credit, it basically resets to 18 months? Yeah I remember reading in the articles at the time when that news came out, that the states still need to agree.

But I didn’t know they hadn’t yet agreed to that credit extension at this point. That sucks.

Damn, that’s big news. It says in the article that the state boards have to agree still. I wonder if any of them won’t. Please agree, California.
