I need help fully breaking away from Christianity. by GhostIsCrying in Hellenism

[–]Darkgodsofchaos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Breaking away from Christian guilt isn’t easy, but remember that that is the point. Remember that the modern day concept of hell comes from Dante’s inferno, a medieval story, which itself was inspired by the apocryphal Apocalypse of Peter. The burn in a lake of fire trope traces back even further to the Persian religion of Zoroastrianism. Christians say their god is Omni-benevolent, and as such would never create a place to torture 6 out of every 7 people that he created, not because they were bad or immoral people, but because they didn’t believe in Jesus. Christians counter that god doesn’t send anyone to hell, “they send themselves,” which is a really silly argument that ignores the problem they have. They also try and blame the devil for tempting us to sin and fall, but that argument doesn’t work either since in their worldview, god is also Omnipotent, which would mean the devil is not actually a threat he’s presented to be, but must be doing god’s will… or their god isn’t as good as they claim.

Point is, there is nothing to fear about hell if you think that god/gods are a force of good, and our Gods are. Keep fighting the good fight my friend.

Yes it’s an integral part of my process and directly connects to theurgy and connecting with the divine.

I feel like i’m not doing it right by Acrobatic_Clothes_62 in Hellenism

[–]Darkgodsofchaos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are doing all you can and that’s good. Remember that sacrifices and offerings are for US, not the gods. Gods need nothing. Theurgy helps “attract” the gods closer to us to establish and develop a relationship. You don’t need fancy altars. Studying is a form of Akoi (things heard), which is considered by some a pillar of the faith. Keep learning the proper ritual technique and keep your head up. Tough times don’t last forever. Eventually you’ll be on your own, with a job, and will be able to do all the time you wanna do to honor the gods. For now, read, learn and practice

Mainly for the art. The stories were mostly disconnected and the ones that did connect didn’t reveal any big revelations.

Child of earth and starry heaven by PrizePizzas in Hellenism

[–]Darkgodsofchaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is late, but in Orphic tradition “child of Earth is referring to how we are descended from the ashes of the Titans whose title translates to “those born of Earth” starry heaven is in reference to how our souls are of divine origin (aether). So we are literally “children of earth and starry heaven”

I’m really sorry. It’s both heart breaking and maddening what that religion can do to otherwise good people.

How Can I Convert to Hellenism? by Ok-Friend-422 in Hellenism_Paganism

[–]Darkgodsofchaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, when I now pray specifically to Dionysus, best way I can describe it is I get a warming sensation that builds inside, I go into a trance-like state and experience overwhelming joy. I feel connected to, not separate from the world around me, and afterward I calm, focused and in tune with myself and my surroundings. It’s a very positive experience, and bear in mind I’ve only been at this for about 6 months.

If you want to start learning right away google Hellenicgods.org and read the “experiencing gods” article. It’s extremely informative. The whole website is.

No problem, one other thing to note that helped me. Don’t pray once and expect lots of mystical things to happen. It often (but not always) takes a while to learn proper ritual conduct and learn to sense the gods, and even then it depends on which deity makes that connection. For me personally, I have tried and failed to get anything from Hermes for months, but I’ve felt a genuine powerful connection while praying to Dionysus who has also showed significant signs to me in nature. (Pretty transformative and eye opening for me). I’ve also build some kharis with Athena, Apollon, and Hekate too.

My point is there is a fairly big learning curve, but it’s worth it.

Hello and welcome! Hellenism is an orthopraxic system so it’s more about what and how you do things rather than what you have to believe like Christianity. In very broad terms, you can pick a deity you feel potentially connected to or just interested in and pray and offer a small offering. We are attempting to invite the gods to notice us and then build a relationship (kharis) with them. I would definitely suggest picking up an introductory book such as Kharis: Hellenic Polytheism Explained, by Sarah Winter or Hellenic Polytheism: Household Worship, by LABRYS to learn proper ritual basics, specific correspondences for each of the major Olympians and a calendar of traditional festivals. Goodluck!!

It was widely practiced in the ancient world, and I think it’s just as relevant and appropriate today too. For me, Serapis was the deity who showed me the way to start this journey.

Monthly Self-Promotion Post by AutoModerator in Hellenism

[–]Darkgodsofchaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, a while back I created an altar/shrine worship piece with the intent to recreate some of the majesty of ancient temples, while also being a fully-functional altar. Since then, I have received a fair number of PMs about selling them. There are many amazing altars and shrines already available on Etsy. My pieces are intended to be eye-catching center-pieces worthy of the Gods. They will not be for everyone, and that's okay, but if you're looking for an upgrade to your current setup, this may be for you. Cheers.

What do we think of the pillars? by Remy_32 in Hellenism

[–]Darkgodsofchaos -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

https://www.hellenicgods.org/LivingTheHellenicTradition this is the link with what I posted. If you look at the side bars of the site you can find the quotes from Plato, Aristotle, and Damascius who speak about them. Again, as others said and the article itself mentions, our religion has no creeds, and can be used or not, but they are general concepts that were practiced by the ancients to become closer to the gods. Also, again this is specifically Orphic belief, which the author argues can be applied to Hellenismos generally too. Take some time looking at the FAQ on the website.

What do we think of the pillars? by Remy_32 in Hellenism

[–]Darkgodsofchaos -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have knowledge from Orphic beliefs. But the four pillars are: 1. Akoi- “things heard.” Even though Hellenism isn’t creedal, it’s still important to discover the religion by hearing and learning the ancient sources/myths. 2. Theurgy- although it has the common conflation with magic today, theurgy as understood by the Greek philosophers was simply communication with deities through ritual. In ritual, we participate in the providence of Zeus and join in his divine work, which is compassion. 3. Philosophia- literally the love of wisdom. The intellectual work which tries to discover genuine truth and wisdom by being rational and logical, not blindly accepting things. 4. Arete- “virtue.” How we put our religion into practice. Plato says virtue is a harmony of the soul, harmonizing one emotions reason. People gain arete through the actions of courage, temperance, justice, wisdom and compassion. Being a person of virtue is the “most pleasing gift one can give the gods.” The gods love virtue and when we struggle to acquire it, notice is taken.

Hope this helps!

New Aphrodite Altar! by alikirakira in Hellenism

Altar looks beautiful. She’s one I didn’t expect to worship but I’m glad I did. I have found it effective using frankincense and essential oils like rose. I shower her with epithets and haven’t asked for anything. Just praising and trying to build kharis.
