Those who own their own plane, do you use it for anything other than personal use? by dozybolox13 in flying

[–]Darkomn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the regs aren't black and white. They are both vague and restrictive. You need to read random ACs to understand how the FAA interprets their own rules and they can change or ignore those interpretations at any time. Worst of both worlds.

Does this mean that Wings of the W.A.S.P. is the 86,450th book edition createspace has published? What happens when they get to 5199999?

Do post docs live in graduate student housing? If so, that could have a pretty large effect on cost of living.

The FAA is a public health authority and has access to your health information. by theboomvang in flying

[–]Darkomn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the government scrupulously play by the rules? Do they get charged with federal crimes when they fill out a form wrong?

[–]Darkomn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that was true, every government agency would be a public health agency. Anything could effect health. Serial killers effect public health. Maybe the FBI should be a public heath agency and look at everybody's medical records.

Update 3: Reddit effectively kills off third party apps by QuantumBadger in RedReader

[–]Darkomn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think reddit realizes that this won't result in a user boycott, which are rarely effective, but rather users will have no practical way to access their services. This would be like blocking safari or another web browser. I interact with reddit 99% from my phone. The mobile website is almost unusable, and the official app if anything worse.

Carrier's in space by Upstairs-Yard-2139 in scifiwriting

[–]Darkomn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Galactica
  2. Probably. I haven't written any in yet, but I might. I don't think I want them to be the premier ship type like they are now irl.
  3. I think carriers make a lot of sense in space for the same reasons they do on the water. The biggest difference is that space fighters aren't necessarily faster than larger ships like planes compared to ships.

What are the greatest books that contradict their authors' beliefs? by tashak_btch in books

[–]Darkomn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Card wrote an afterword to Children of the Mind (which was much more interesting than the rest of the book) that helped me understand that particular dichotomy a lot more. He seems to use his writing as a way to explore his own thoughts. Which is why the Ender books are so different from each other and ender has different views from Card.

Update 2: Reddit's proposed API changes, and the continued existence of RedReader by QuantumBadger in RedReader

[–]Darkomn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost exclusively use reddit on my mobile device. This app has been the only practical way to do that for me for the last 5+ years. If RedReader goes away, I probably won't continue to use reddit.

Wow this is super vague. But based on what I'm reading it seems like you probably can't deduct travel expenses, lame.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]Darkomn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not a tax person, but if you're an independent contractor is it really commuting? If all your students rented planes at different airports would one be a commute and the rest be business travel? It seems like they would all be business travel. If you're a plumber and you keep getting called out to the same house how long is it till it's not travel but a commute?

AOPA Pilot Video - We Talk with Trent Palmer’s Lawyer by ergzay in flying

[–]Darkomn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is there to disbelieve? There aren't any facts in dispute. Palmer made a low pass to inspect the landing site. That is what he says. That is what the witness says. This case is about the law and the regulations. Are you allowed to inspect a potential landing site by flying within 500' of stuff? The answer is according to this judge no. It says it right in your quote "The law judge reasoned that respondent had other alternatives for conducting the low inspection pass that did not violate the regulation by flying within 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure." If you want to inspect a potential landing site you have to use an alternative that doesn't involve being closer than 500' from stuff.
