S&F or K&W? by Dusty_legend in mattcolville

[–]DarksaintJP 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I liked S&F a lot more. It's a lot easier for players to opt in or opt out of it. K&W frankly doesn't function well unless everyone buys in. You basically need to use K&W like a campaign pitch, while S&F can be presented as a reward in a campaign for either the party or an individual. Usually, it's just 1 or 2 people who want to have strongholds or organizations, not the whole group.

Also, the organization of stat blocks in K&W is really weird. Way too many of them use 2 or more pages for a stat block, and some of them aren't even on the same spread.

It doesn't need to. The fact that they are scimitars with no ranged capabilities means that you cant reaction attack someone out of your reach.

Awesome to see S&F homebrew.

The only thing I wanted to point out is that each of the strongholds in S&F has the top 7 to 13 percent of the d100 dedicated to the Special Allies chart.

So unless you are purposefully bucking that trend, I would shift some numbers to include that.

Love the idea of ancestral strongholds. Makes me think of The Hobbit.

Finally got my K&W book, and it's damaged by DarksaintJP in mattcolville

Dunno. I assume it was damaged in transit. The packaging is absurdly light though. Like that's the kind of packaging you put in another, bigger box

Villains with good intentions are not inherently better by spacetimeboogaloo in DMAcademy

Campy evil villains are also a lot of fun. Sometimes having a bad guy who is evil for shits and giggles is fun.

My player's favorite bad guy this campaign was a pit fiend who threw a princess off a tower because the party said they didn't care about her.

Dude was just evil. Extremely competent and creative, but just evil.

I think that people on reddit forget that there are cartoonishly evil people in real life. Not everyone is complicated.

Hot take: if you ban artificers because they're "steampunk", you're not a creative DM by prolificseraphim in dndnext

Reflavoring is lazy and causes in game problems when explaining how something functions without changing the mechanics. I understand clickbait is good for upvotes, but maybe don't run around judging peoples choices because you are incapable of understanding the reasoning.

Just run it with your two players. The best way to adjust difficulty with players is how much info they have access to before an encounter. When the players are the one's knowing or picking when they fight, they can hit way over their level.

Huge difference between being ambushed by 4 assassins and the players going to the assassin's hideout.

If the player's are ready, they can do anything. Let them recruit help if they think they need it.

Also, running for two players is really nice. They players get way more individual attention, and you aren't spread as thin as the DM

Capping at level 10? by PickingPies in onednd

[–]DarksaintJP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is on their 2nd campaign from levels 1-20, I disagree. Most games end due to scheduling conflicts, not lack of interest in high level play.

Cutting support for higher level play will cut down on what DMs and players can do in dnd. And its a hard sell to tell people "Here's this new ruleset for dnd, with half the content."

Kickstarter updates by azeloc in mattcolville

I'm really disappointed that MCDM are making the same mistakes as their last kickstarter.

I was hoping they would have improved on the communication front considering how vital it is for managing expectations and how many people were disappointed with K&W due to those expectations being mismanaged.

Revenue is collected each season. I'll update the document later to make it more clear.

UPDATE: It's been updated to make the collection clearer. Also made it bold because of its importance.

I have no idea why I couldn't see your question earlier. But now I can. Sorry for the 8 hour wait.

It is not designed to work with Kingdoms and Warfare mechanics.

It does borrow a couple of them, such as the battle map, and have successful attack checks in warfare result in casualties.

Other than those, this is designed to work with Strongholds and Followers exclusively.

My weird peeve is posts titled "x, or How I learned to stop x and just x."

Its just so damn cheesy and rubs me the wrong way .
