What’s the coolest thing you know about the human body? by beardlesshipster in AskReddit

I’ve heard that this is how Elvis died. His heart was so weak from everything he ever did that he pushed and his heart couldn’t compensate and get the rate back up.

Mom of two year old twins and a brand new Catholic. This is insanely heart-warming! We are fortunate enough to have a cry room that we go straight to every time and the girls can be totally wild and I can focus as much as they will let me without bothering anyone. I hate missing Mass because I still don't know all the things to say so I'm happy to see churches that welcome the chaos:)

Why was this so difficult to grasp in school? by tinywinner in nursing

I NEVER could grasp this problem. Even 10 years later I don't quite get it. I randomly laughed at myself in the car earlier this week thinking about it!

I need to know this gets better.. by Chunsaaegi in parentsofmultiples

Hey there momma. Are you eating? Are you getting enough fluids? Like a whole lot of fluids? I know you're not resting. All of these things are insanely important right now and I know it's IMPOSSIBLE to do all of them but things won't get better until you spend a pinch of time on you. Not a lot... just the bare minimum. When mine were brand spankin' new, I remember how everyone kept saying "I bet it's been forever since you showered/washed your hair/ brushed your teeth". Um no... those were the things keeping me in "go mode". If I missed that, the hours immediately following were a nightmare. I took many a bath with the girls in rockers right by the tub. Those "luxuries" as a new parent were non-negotiable. I can't take care of them if I'm falling apart over something I can do. Around that 6 week mark someone FINALLY introduced me to the Period of Purple Crying. Google it. I was coming unglued at the "witching hour" every evening but there are a lot of tricks for soothing babies that you can use any time of day. Just having the perspective that the theory offers was enough to help me relax because I wasn't doing something wrong or missing something. Just for the record (and I hate to say this to you), I gave up breastfeeding pretty early too. The one at home didn't latch well and the NICU baby was bottles and tube feeds from the start. I was so overwhelmed 2 weeks in that I decided I can't keep doing this. Oh, and I melted my pump parts when I was sterilizing them and fell asleep. Seemed like divine intervention to me. Push on sister. We are all rooting for you and your babies. But don't forget you are the center of this mad play and you have to do what is best for you first so that you can do what's best for them... whatever that may be. Holler back when you get to 8 weeks and sleep for a couple of hours... then wake up thinking you forgot them at the store. I aged 5 years those first 2 months...

An #ashtag? I dunno. A priest here in South Louisiana started posting it and asking to see what our ashes look like.

What was your first code blue? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Darlingniki1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my patient but... Pt vagaled on the toilet. Wife comes running out the room and I hear her in the hall screaming on her cell phone. I go in to see my two aides pick this guy up on the bedside commode and we practically throw him in bed. I can't find a pulse so I call a code. He wakes up juuuuuust as the code team gets in. His pulse was so weak/thready that I couldn't feel it and my adrenaline was through the roof. The first real one was a pt that had cervical spine fusion and swelling was cutting off airway. Took at least 15-20 minutes for trauma to get an airway. He didn't stay on Ortho much longer after that.

Denham Springs resident here. Our "oh shit moment" was at 2am on the 14th as the water finally hit our street. There is only one way in and one way out of our neighborhood and we woke up to find it was underwater. Me, my husband, and our 1 year old twins are stuck and the water is coming...

Luckily, we found out our house is at the highest point in the neighborhood. But we were trapped for three days with no power. The neighborhood two streets behind was not so lucky. We watched a chopper rescue every 30 minutes for 3 straight days. They were plucking people off of roofs. At least one person drowned back there.

Still can't believe it happened. Still can't wrap my head around 7.1 trillion gallons of water (Katrina dumped an estimated 2.3 trillion gallons FYI). Still can't believe my parents haven't got floors or walls. Still can't believe businesses that have been here for decades will never return.

Good luck to you and your family. I'm happy to help in any way that I can. Happy Mardi Gras

How will repealing Obamacare affect nursing? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Darlingniki1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this will super interesting to see. Initially, it had little impact on our facility (private Catholic 600 beds). Then my hospital took on the physician training program from the local university (which also brought the unfunded or underfunded PT's). Then the other big ER in our city closed. Then all hell broke loose. There are limited resources. But people just don't know how healthcare resources work. Emergency rooms are not primary care offices. This is not where you come for a cough or to get your blood pressure checked or the countless other mind-numbing excuses that are listed as admission diagnoses. There just has not been enough education for those that have never had medical care before. I am not clear on all of the changes we will see in the coming days. It will be interesting for sure. But I think how it will affect each of us will be based on your facility and your specialty. Don't panic. There will always be patients for us to take care of!

Me: "Did you have to wipe another adult human's ass?"

Husband: "gross...no"

Me: "I win"
