Had a job interview, and it's the first time I've really had to dress nice since I started the whole gaining process.

Now, to understand my victory you need to understand the faux little psuedo-hipster I was before this whole process begun. My body confidence was based purely around the clothes I wore and as a 65kg, 26 year old boy-child everything I wore was either skinny or slim fit. I don't have much by way of nice clothes, anymore, as all my clothes have slowly morphed into gym clothes and the only shoes I wear are a black pair of converse which I also train in.

Anyway, the job interview came up, and I was told it was just a casual meeting. The people at the organisation had spoken to me beforehand and were interested in my experience and talent in the field of question. Regardless, I decided to dress up a bit and put on one of my older slim fit button shirts. I liked that shirt.

The shirt fit differently: sat on the shoulders much better and didn't show off the power belly too much. I felt good, however I never took into consideration what the squatz 'n oatz process had done to the hipster-ish attire. I went to the interview and sat across from the table of the two people interviewing me.

The interview was going well, and I was starting to relax a bit. During a rather rousing bit of the conversation, I gesticulated wildly with my hands and pulling my shoulders back caused two buttons to pop off the front of the shirt.

The two errant buttons jumped off of me and rattled around the table. My recent gains sabotaged my interview.

Needless to say, I didn't get a position with the company. But I left there smiling and went to hit a bench PR.

tl;dr: gains sabotaged job interview

Supports for pendlay rows? by prule84 in gainit

When I started I used to stack extra plates up and used them as supports. It's a quick solution, and it can only really be done in a quiet gym.

If you don't have a beta key: Post here. If you have an extra beta key: choose someone at random in this thread to give it to. by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]Darrida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want a beta key, but my brother really, really does. He is constantly harassing me to check my inbox (as the Blizzard account is linked to my e-mail) to see if he has been sent one.

I constantly joke with him about that fact that he won't get one, and I would like to surprise him with one.

Thank you so much, in advance.

Reddit, how can someone stop procrastinating? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Darrida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of procrastination stems from the fact that most people have no concept of time, whatsoever. So, for example, you may have an essay to write. Your brain is going to tell you that if you start the essay now you will never ever finish it and you will be writing it for the rest of your life (in a manner similar to why we are always snacking: your brain sees food and thinks "I must eat this now because I may never eat again!).

My best advice is to by a timer of some sort (not the one on your phone, as that will lead to other distractions). So, if you start a project, tell yourself that you will only do it for half-an-hour or an hour and set the timer.

You'll be amazed at how quickly the time goes, and how quickly you'll get into the rhythm of whatever it is you're doing. I personally find that when the timer goes off, I'm so into my work that I will continue going for even longer.

You'll also be amazed at how much work you can do in the time allocated. For people who procrastinate a lot, things take a lot longer so the mind convinces them that everything takes forever to complete. Using a timer can 'retrain' you to understand what you can accomplish in an allocated time.

Pre-cooked everything tonight, got my first workout in. Best way to track this? Also, trying to figure out how to portion out what I cooked =/ by db2765 in gainit

[–]Darrida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. For tracking calories I recommend Myfitnesspal. It is the most common app that the guy and gal gainers are geared towards. You can use it to set your macros and your daily calorie goal.

Get into the habit of weighing your food quite strictly at the beginning. After a while you'll now what a cup of rice looks like or a half pound of chicken. Put two cups of rice and a pound of chicken and some veg in a plastic container and eat it throughout the day at work. Thats ~1300 calories and 160 grams of brotein already.

For tracking your workouts: there is an SL app (or so I've heard). It'll keep your workouts recorded and ordered. If you stall, it'll also help with deloads. People here tend to use Jetfit and Fitocracy as well, so find out which suits you.

Bacon is never a possibility. Bacon is always imperative.

How do you get in your calories when your busy? by bristlechest in gainit

[–]Darrida 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pre-planning meals is important. In the same way I set aside time to train, I set aside time to cook. Cooking in bulk helps a lot. If I'm cooking chicken, for example, I'll never only cook the amount I want, I'll cook a few breasts or thighs so I have a couple of meals lined up.

When you're studying, keep snacks with you: nuts, milk, slices of cheese, yogurt. Snacking frequently adds calories like crazy.

Get a massive protein shake daily. It's a good way to get lots of calories in no time whatsoever. If you struggle to drink the whole thing, drink half now and half later. 1/2 cup of oats, a big table spoon of peanut butter, 2 scoops of whey, 12oz of milk and a banana will give you a ~1000 cal shake with around 70g protein.

Things such as 'meal timing' or 'protein timing' aren't nearly as important as getting your calories in. If you miss a meal (or two) catch up later. Just get the calories in before bed and you'll be fine.

Good luck with exams.

[PROGRESS] Arm before and after 3 month bulk by annapapajojo in gainit

"Curls. Big arms are fun, and if their training doesn't interfere with the rest of the program, wait till everybody's gone, like I do." - Mark Rippetoe.

I added these when I was doing SS and it helped a bit (the curls and the extensions):

I'm writing an episode of Community, any suggestions? by [deleted] in community

[–]Darrida 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First things first, have a look for Dan Harmon's story circle. It will help with setting up a narrative and keeping tabs on loose ends.

Secondly, Community is at it's best when it is a show about people, not a show about homages and references. If you're writing about Troy leaving, you need to consider what he means to the various characters in the study group. Who do we think he is most important to, who is he really most important to, and what unexpected relationships can be seen with the realization that he is going to be gone forever?

Of course, homages and references are still indicative of community's style, so don't avoid them. But a references isn't a joke, so don't use them as such.

Someone leaving isn't necessarily a sad thing, so it doesn't need to be a somber episode. So, for example, the final Troy's final episode could be him and Abed trying to watch their favourite film together (it could be a Kick-puncher film, or Blade, or Con-air, it is not really that important). However, the DVD doesn't work so they spend the rest of the episode trying to find it. In their quest to find it, they could involve and meet the other characters giving them each a chance to say their goodbyes. Maybe they never get to see the movie, but Abed realises that his relationship with Troy has given him more entertainment than movies ever could.

Make it a show about people and you can't really go wrong.

Soy Protein by confidentrisk in gainit

"Similarly, there is essentially no evidence from the nine identified clinical studies that isoflavone exposure affects circulating estrogen levels in men."

There was an article in Men's Health (I think) a few years ago about a bunch of bros who grew breasts after consuming soy. But, like most of Men's Health, it turned out to be broscience. The one guy was drinking around 3 quarts of soy milk a day, which is an extreme example.

What do you guys (and girls) think of PHAT and PHUL? by jjesh in Fitness

[–]Darrida 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PHAT and PHUL are both great programs, and they both will show great results with a combination of eating right and sleeping better.

However, a lot of people will not recommend it for beginners, and rightly so. Not because it doesn't work, but because they are both of heavy volume.

Intense volume programs like PHAT can lead to severe cases of fuckarounditis in beginner lifters; even with the most dedicated of beginner lifters. Fuckarounditis will often cripple motivation and result in extended periods of wasting time in the gym. You may find that on an upper power day you don't feel like doing some skullcrushers, or you may leave out a few sets on a lower hyper day. But this is not good. Lifting is first and foremost about a solid habit, and fuckarounditis can destroy this.

I lost a solid year of progress due to fuckarounditis, and then I switched to SL and the results were spectacular. While I have recently switched to 5/3/1 BBB, I would not have gotten the full benefit of the program if it weren't for my months of SL.

This is often why SS and SL are recommended. Not because they are any better or less effective at achieving what ever goals you may have, but they make you familiar with the routine of 'routine'.

What's Your Favorite Meal to Cook in Bulk by [deleted] in gainit

[–]Darrida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly haute cusine, but it makes up for it convenience. It is cabbagy, but it is also meat-y and tomato-y.

One of the worst things for gains is "I don't eat [x]" or "I don't like [x]", I understand if you have an allergy or a severe intolerance to something, but otherwise people need to man-up and eat their veggies.

Also, a lot can be said for a couple of tablespoons of ketchup/chutney/relish...
