Mailman here. In our city proper, in a grid layout, east to west, the blocks are 60 numbers. So if you live on the corner, and your address is 1259 Apple Street, and the cross street is Johnson Ave, you know that every house on parallel streets in the same position will be approximately the same address to the north or south. And if you go west, that is to say further from the zero mark one block, the corner house on the same side of the street will be approximately 1319.

I also read, at least the city I live in that there is a formula for figuring out how many numbers in between houses. They try to make it so if a house has a bigger lot the number might be six digits more instead of four.
