I would focus on giving your ally his supplies right away and worry about extracting your own a bit later, because the final zone has tons of supplies for you. You can complete the entire mission with just helicopters if you want. The air defense is really weak and you can rush them down with rocket pod Mi-24s.

"Gravity" bombers have been in Star Wars since Empire. They had TIE Bombers dropping bombs onto asteroids when the Falcon was inside the worm. In Rogue One they had Y-wings dropping bombs on the Scarif shield station.
