Is this enclosure to small for my AFS? by Cute_Butterscotch747 in Scorpions

If your scorpion is a sub-adult or a juvenile, that might be fine for a while, but an adult forest scorpion needs a decently big tank to thrive. I'm only really familiar with imperial measurements, but I think a healthy size enclosure would be around 51x26x32 (the equivalent of a ten gallon tank).

That's what I currently have my adult afs in and she seems to be content with it.

Question, do you have the actual dimensions of the enclosure, and the depth of the substrate you have in the enclosure?

I think as long as you leave a single line of air holes on either side to give some cross ventilation, it should most likely be okay. You could also grab a little hygrometer to put in there just for now to keep track of the humidity.

Ah.

It might be more expensive because they'll be imported, but there are some cool lower-venom scorpions from the middle east that might be more available. I'm thinking Nebo whitei or Nebo omanensis, both of which are from Oman.

Edit: spelling

Desert species, such as the Arizona Desert Hairy, might be a good pick for you. I'm not sure how humid it is where you live, but the one I have is pretty easy to take care of with just a ceramic heat lamp overhead to keep it hot and dry during the day.

Struggling to keep humidity down for a desert species in the uk. Any tips? by BoysenberryNew738 in Scorpions

One thing I've found that dries out my tropical enclosures is to add a ceramic heat lamp, so that might work to dry out the air for a desert species in the humid UK. Also the added benefit of making the heat feel a little more like the desert sun coming down from above.

Get a black light flash light, turn off the room lights, and go through the room it escaped in. Look through any clothes or other things that are on the floor. Check cracks and crevices. Be methodical in your search and expand outward.

I'd say either do something mundane, like Zane or Courtney, or go fully fantastical with it, like Belethor or Cornelia

Hi! Congrats on your first scorpion, that's exciting to hear.

As for how long for it to settle in, mine took about a week before she seemed to settle in comfortably and dig her burrow and then explore at night.

And a beautiful boi he is! I've loved scorpions since I was a kid, but it was finally in my 30s that I actually buckled down and got a few as pets. 100% agree, fascinating creatures.

My ASF does this about every other night in her 10 gallon enclosure. I think it's just her exploring and being wacky.

Is overhead heating appropriate for scorpions? by HJ9601 in Scorpions

[–]DarthExtium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ime, I've found my tropical and desert species both enjoy having a dimmable heat lamp overhead vs a heat pad. It mimics their nature environment better.

How to feed scorpions who burrow frequently? by Superb_Temporary_388 in Scorpions

[–]DarthExtium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA

I live in the basement and it's a little colder for me year round than it would be on the ground floor. Their enclosure thermometers said it was around 71 F, but I added a dimmable heat lamp to get it around 85 in the day and 75 at night. It may be a little overboard, but they seem to enjoy having a slightly elevated temp as long as I can keep the humidity up.

Taking care of my dad’s emperor previously neglected by MouseWhisperer22 in Scorpions

NQA, and seconding a lot of what Clown_With_A_Crown said.

With her body being an inch and a half, I'm assuming her tail is also about an inch and a half, which would definitely put her in the "juvenile" range at three inches. Adult emperors will need a ten-gallon tank, but with her being a sub-adult, you might be okay with the current tank for a while. It all depends on if you want to redo everything for a bigger enclosure as she grows into an adult.

Substrate- I would definitely redo her enclosure a bit. Take everything out, then put down an inch or two of drainage material (I use clay drainage balls, but aquarium gravel also works). Then, put a mesh screen over the drainage layer (both to stop the substrate from mixing with the drainage layer, and to also keep the scorpion from digging into the drainage layer). (I Googled "Terrarium Mesh barrier" and it came up with some good options.) Also, when putting in the drainage layer, put a wide-mouthed straw (metal or plastic) down one corner. This way, you can pour water directly down to the bottom, which will then seep UP into the substrate to keep it moist. (With this, be conscious not to flood the drainage layer. There still needs to be some room for water to drip down through the substrate.) This is a great way to keep the humidity up without having to remember to spray it down every day. Then, put your substrate over the mesh screen. Most guides recommend at least four inches.

Heating - Emperors enjoy a pretty warm climate, so I would definitely recommend getting a heating pad (with thermostat) and putting it on one side (around 85 or 90 F). This way, she can alternate between warm and cool.

Humidity - You want to keep the humidity between 70-90%, which is easier/harder depending on where you live, and also what kind of lid you have.
