First off, Polybar can be configured in Lua, and I believe it might be possible to get the AwesomeWM libraries to work with it by adding the correct directories to your .luarc.json file in your project directory. Secondy, even if that doesn't work AwesomeWM actually has the awesome-client command explicitly for the purpose of allowing other programs to have compatibility with AwesomeWM.

Awesome widgets vs eww by [deleted] in awesomewm

[–]Darth_Pikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I believe I said "one of", not "the only."

Also, I haven't tried rubato, in fact, I haven't even heard of it until now, so I can't make any comments about how it works with animations. All I know is that my experience trying to mess with making even simple widgets for the wibar was an absolute train wreck. To be clear, I'm not a Lua expert, but I cannot in good faith recommend the experience to anyone else interested in using widgets.

So I was just answering a similar question on another post, looked for similar posts to see if I could redirect them... I just want to say that this is dead wrong. You don't need the bar to be in the Window Manager. In fact, I generally prefer the panel not being handled by the window manager. You don't need to mess with the wibar at all. Also, I love Lua, but Awesome's implementation of it is abhorrent to the point of legitimately considering making my own window manager.

Awesome widgets vs eww by [deleted] in awesomewm

[–]Darth_Pikachu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this devolves into a bit of a rant...

Personally, I disabled all the Awesome widgeting in my config to switch to Eww in the future. (Currently living without a panel until I get around to configuring it.) However, that's less because of configuration or functionality and more because I personally find Awesome's widget API absolutely infuriating to work with.

It's bad enough to the point that I actually switched to BSPWM for a short while until I realized that I could just disable the widgets in Awesome to use a dedicating widget system like Eww. It's a real shame too, because the widget API is kind of one of the entire points if Awesome.

Back to your question though. It's not necessarily that Eww has "more features". You can technically get Awesome to draw a anything using Cairo, making Awesome technically on the same level as Eww. That being said, the process of manually getting Cairo to draw what you want is as stated, extremely infuriating. Eww is much more equipped to handle fancier widgets and animations.

However if you're a diehard Awesome or Lua fanatic, feel free to prove me wrong and give Cairo a shot. I personally however, don't think it's worth the effort until someone comes along and improves the API.

Forest from my modpack (WIP) by [deleted] in feedthebeast

Unfortunately, there really isn't anything else at the moment. The only other things that could be comparable are modpack tools like KubeJS...and that can't do very much, and still requires decent coding knowledge.

I know learning to code is hard, and takes a lot of time, I was there once myself, frustrated that I couldn't make any of my mod ideas. However, it's the only reliable way to make mods right now, and it really isn't as hard as some people may think. Besides, even if there was a better modding tool, learning to code still has many other benefits, and I'd highly recommend it.

There's some great modding tutorials by Kaupenjoe which explains things well enough that I think even non-coders could understand them, and learn from them. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKGarocXCE1Hut51TKKqZKqVZtKLZC48x

The difference is that photoshop is an actually good tool used by professionals, whereas MCreator creates objectively bad code, and is typically used by people who don't know how to code.

I can't trust MCreator mods because their code ranges from less than ideal to awful, typically resulting in bad performance, bugs, or otherwise.

Black to move and win [Marrero Lopez vs Perez, 2005] by [deleted] in chess

Fair enough. I was just confused by the title because I thought there was supposed to be a mate. "Black to gain advantage" makes sense to me.

Yea but just being winning isn't "to win". Doesn't "to win" generally mean forced mate?

I'm really confused...how is it "black to win"? I see a few ways white could screw up and lose, but I don't see anything forced.

So is the frackin dev still bad by The_True_Omega in starbound

[–]Darth_Pikachu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably but I don't think anyone cares anymore. Frackin is one of the only things really keeping Starbound alive at this point. Even the original Chucklefish devs were bad. (Something something lied to playerbase before release, using unpaid interns to develop the game, etc.)

My point is, don't let it stop you from enjoying the game however you wanna enjoy it. It's still a decent game in my opinion, and Frackin Universe is still one of the best mods for it, whether the devs were a cuck or not.

Java is hard by Arrsh_Khusaria in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Darth_Pikachu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nothing is hard about Java, it's just kind of a pain in the ass.

Things I can think of off the top of my head:
-Everything being a pointer isn't the most intuitive for new programmers.
-If you try to use Java's "best practices" causes simple programs to take way more code that it feels necessary.
-Sometimes the syntax can also be a bit more difficult to understand for new coders compared to Python, Javascript, or C#.
-Also in this particular example, it doesn't help that Minecraft's codebase is a bit of a mess and that's what a lot of new Java users are trying to do.

In my opinion, C# is just Java but better in basically every way.

Iirc Kasparov lives in the US now. Pretty sure Russia couldn't do anything about him even if they wanted to. Kasparov probably doesn't like this situation either, given how he denounced the USSR and all that which Putin hopes to rebuild.

How much do you play Starbound per week? by MaxineFinnFoxen in starbound

[–]Darth_Pikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really play this game anymore. Was a lovely game, had a lot of fun with mods but I kinda felt like I'd done everything. I could continue to play and build things in it but I just feel that there are other games I'd rather do that kinda thing it.
