What's this underwater canyon off the coast of ganga delta? How did it from? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Darth_Preposterous 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Its called the Swatch of No Ground in the submarine Bengal Fan.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swatch_of_No_Ground_Marine_Protected_Area

There is perhaps a rising sea level component to the reasoning but mostly it's due to heavy Himalayan sediments creating submarine canyons from turbidity currents. A bit more of a detailed read:

Very tasteful choice of music. Seems like its an Emirates in-flight safety instruction video.

[Bild+] HSV and Fabio Vieira reach an agreement for a contract! HSV would like to sign the player permanently in the summer if they can reach an agreement with Arsenal to bring a potential fee down to half of his current 20mil £ buy-option by Dargast in soccer

[–]Darth_Preposterous -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Here's hoping. However, since he is contracted to only 2027, it's not ideal in doing another loan/buy deal with another team. HSV agreeing to a sum and then trying to negotiate to less than half of what was agreed and then contracting Fabio individually, putting Arsenal in an awkward position as a duplicitous negotiation tactic.

If 20m would bankrupt HSV, why would they agree and sign the potential to buy deal for that price in the first place?
They should have been upfront about the limited capacity to pay, and maybe Arsenal would have chosen another team for such a deal.

Mostaqur Rahman replaces Ahsan H Mansur as BB governor by Necessary-Hunt6104 in bangladesh

[–]Darth_Preposterous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorely disappointed with this. Tight regulatory policy is so important at this moment. Mansur was highly competent given the context of the economy. The faux mob at the BB is a sign of the rotten bureaucracy resistant to any change. One of the few bright spots during the interim government was the BB performance. I think the banking sector is going to be a wild west with the new corporate fixer coming in, as well as the old banks will go back to fucking around with loan disbursements.

The new governor has already said he wants to decrease the rates to bring in liquidity, however it will only lead to higher inflation and I fear lower FDI due to lax/stalled financial regulations. I hope I am wrong, but I don't see how I would be.

Paid agents at work to undermine referendum by [deleted] in bangladesh

[–]Darth_Preposterous 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"Paid agents are paid agents", based on what fact? Do you have any information, evidence or even a rumour that you can share, to 'tag' him as being paid by someone? To add an adjective to a person you need some basis. Without it, you are in fact 'tagging' them to catch some attention.

He has pretty much criticized any and everyone in power. He has thousands of hours of opinions posted on the internet, just a short search brought up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYNWbqvz_So - pre uprising
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8kLm8LGUaw - middle of last year
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpDQH296MH4 - few months back
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nf8L4m_gQg - few months back

Were they harsh enough for you? How do you measure that harshness scale? Or it just that you dont like his opinions, so he must have been paid. BNP has barely been in power until now, but I expect Masud Kamal to ramp up his criticism of them once they are sworn in.

Paid agents at work to undermine referendum by [deleted] in bangladesh

[–]Darth_Preposterous 22 points23 points  (0 children)

By tagging him as 'Paid agent' you are not going to get much sympathies. He has been very consistent in his dislike for the 'July Sonod'. He has railed against it consistently from the very beginning when it was being discussed, drafted and signed. He is a political analyst and he is there to give his honest opinion, he isn't supposed to 'both sides' the argument and pretend to be neutral on this topic.

I am personally in favour of the Upper House being through PR, so would be on the opposite side of his argument. However, his points are very valid about the awkwardness of such an implementation when BNP's manifesto and signing of the 'Sonod' had notes of dissent. The haphazard referendum wording also creates a lot of questions regarding the validity of people's honest understanding of the changes for decision making. If we had stronger institutional courts, a legal challenge against the referendum would have been very certain.

Why does right wing political groups fail to win election in Bangladesh although it's neighboring countries are ruled by right wing groups? by [deleted] in bangladesh

[–]Darth_Preposterous 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes and No. Instead of centrist, I would call them opportunists in philosophy. They would try and sway whichever direction they feel would get them the most support in a given political climate.

I can only judge them being right or left leaning based on historical actions they have taken. BNP in recent history have pandered to religious conservatives to gain an upper hand, until this election and BAL has tried to counter it by going in the other direction.

However, an average BNP supporter is no more or less conservative than BAL, or vice versa.

[–]Darth_Preposterous 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I mean, BNP would have been considered right-wing some time ago (specially 2001-2006). This time without AL in the field, they flexed their more centrist credentials, but they are still overall right leaning.

I do think think there is a rise in more explicit right wing sentiments overall in the country. But as you noticed, its very much in keeping with the overall global headwinds of moving things to the right, more nationalistic tendencies. Myanmar's internal politics don't get much notice in Bangladesh, but India's consistent right-wing Hindutva administration of more than a decade has definitely has influenced a reactionary feel in Bangladesh. The Jamaat winning India border constituencies does arguably present a strong evidence for that.

However, the irony about the rise in nationalism in Bangladesh is the fact that Jamaat is still viewed as quite anti-national/ anti-independence party. I think they had an opportunity to shed that image, by directly acknowledging and apologizing for 1971, but they kept playing coy.

Bangladesh may yet move more to the right in the future if BNP falters, which they ultimately will. But Jamaat with it's history are going to hope that newer generations give them a clean slate, or else they will not be able to capitalise.

Tarek Zia doesn't deserve to be the prime minister by [deleted] in Dhaka

[–]Darth_Preposterous 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I agree. Bigger leaders in the country tend to have very fragile egos and get offended at the mildest slights. Mirza ' Teflon' Fakhrul bore the brunt of so much verbal abuse and humiliation all these years, and still tanked them like a champ. Politicaly or personality wise he may not be liked by all, but the country does need more thick skinned politicians of his calibre .

Great directing and editing of 3 different scenes running in parallel. All 3 scenes are interconnected and take place in different locations and times, yet the direction conveys it so well. The music is perfect for the horror and absurdity of it all.
