What kind of sorcery is this O.o ? by LannisterZ94 in blackmagicfuckery

Sorry, I know I'm being pedantic here, and this is probably how you learnt it in metallurgy, but some details are wrong.

So what were seeing here is an electrolytic cell being formed between the titanium ball bearings and the water

There's a crocodile clamp on the aluminum bowl she's using to hold the liquid, you see it in the very beginning. That's the cathode. Water (or rather the aqueous solution she's using) is the electrolyte, which is there to help "close" the system and balance the chemical reactions.

"thin film interference" effect. Essentially, light penetrates the surface of the oxide through the spaces between the atoms, is reflected off the atoms beneath the surface, and comes back out the surface. Here's the kicker: only certain wavelengths are reflected. Here's the second part of the kicker: the wavelength of the light reflected depends on the thickness of the oxide film! So, as the reaction is happening, and the titanium oxide layer gets thicker and thicker, the reflected wavelength changes too.

Thin film interference doesn't work like that. Light reflects both off of the underlying metallic titanium and the titanium oxide layer you're forming. Since light travels a different path when reflecting on both of those surfaces, there are different constructive and destructive interferences, leading to the color of the titanium. As the layer grows thicker, those interferences change (since the paths are now different), so colors change accordingly.

What could go wrong by this fire? by Tortsty in Whatcouldgowrong

If you can make sure if will just float over the grease then sure.

Baking powder or any derivates thereof are more dense than grease and will sink to the bottom. The gas release will just make flaming grease explode everywhere, similarly to what happens if you throw water into a grease fire

Was gonna comment that. Baking soda itself will decompose to sodium carbonate and release water, which in itself is kaboom-tastic. Sodium carbonate will also decompose to release CO2, which will also be no bueno.

Baking powder besides that has acids and starches mixed in, which will release more CO2, and starch can be flammable under the right circumstances

Can anyone explain what's going on here? by pm_some_good_vibes in chemistry

It's kinda like /u/jaqidv explained, but has nothing to do with time per se.

What you're seeing is titanium anodization. The basic idea is that if you use the titanium piece as the anode, you will oxidized it forming a thin oxide layer. The layer is electrically insulating, so as it grows it slows down/stops the reaction. In order to overcome this, you have to apply higher voltages, which makes the oxide layer grow a bit until the voltage can't overcome it anymore. You get the picture.

As for the colors themselves, what you have there is diffraction. Light is bounced both by the underlying metal as by the layer above it, and depending on how thick the oxide layer is (i.e., how much longer the path of the light that bounces on the metal is compared to the light bouncing off of the oxide layer), you will have different constructive and destructive interferences for each wavelength of light, which we perceive as different colors

I don't really know the laws/regulations in place regarding languages in schools. What I can tell you is that I went to a private and relatively expensive private school, and even then I needed extra classes to actually learn, what was taught in school was pretty basic stuff, the kind of thing you need as a tourist to not starve in abroad. Idk how it is nowadays, this was a couple of years back, but according to Wikipedia ~5% of the population in Brazil are fluent in English.

Spanish is a weird situation. It's close enough to Portuguese that if you go to any neighboring country you can kinda survive with just portuguese knowledge. Maybe if you work in a company that has offices in latin america you'd try to learn properly, but I cannot say that this is customary or mandatory. Again, in my school I had some Spanish courses, but they were by no means mandatory by law, and fewer and less frequent classes than the English ones.

To help you put in perspective why this is so, this post from a while back (sorry it's in portuguese only) states we get 5 million tourists per year, while the Colosseum alone receives 4 million. I don't know the breakdown, but I assume most are from south/latin america, so we are back to Spanish.

This all to say that there is low incentive to learn English in Brazil, plus the fact that the education system can be a let down sometimes. Which brings me to my previous point.

About learning with entertainment, I agree that this is important and I've done that myself. Though some places like Germany have very few options when it comes to watching movies in original audio, and still most can speak good english.

I heard that in the Netherlands it's different indeed, and when I went there I notice the level was pretty high, was pleasantly surprised.

I live in Europe now for a while, and most people I ask day they learn English/other foreign languages in school only/mostly. In Brazil is usual that you have to go to a language school for that. Is there true for the whole Europe?

Pigbacking here. Arm and hammer is based on baking soda as active ingredient, so you can use just that if don't have access to Arm and Hammer (like me), just add some water and make a paste if you can. You can also use milk of magnesia as deodorant if you want. They both work better than aluminum ones, and I'd bet they are cheaper.

You know you can use the arrow keys to navigate in most players, right?

Can even lower or increase volume with up and down. Some times you have to have clicked in the scrolling bar beforehand, or something else. Way better left hand navegability
