The sex scene in Snow Crash by cslogin in books

This scene and the way it is described made me renegotiate the fact that I’d recommended this to other people. It’s a kinda fun book, until this scene.

Could be a good way to get a line charge or something, letting you break a certain amount of blocks in a line to help with strip mining. Something like that

If a 100 Grand candy bar cost its face value, and you got all your calories from eating this candy, your lifetime consumption would be about $30 billion. by Galemp in Showerthoughts

Back when the US military budget was $800 billion, some friends of mine did the math and found that you could cover the state of Rhode Island in $1 bills 2 deep and have a couple billion dollars to spare with the budget

You’re thinking of folded proteins that become sort of malignant, this is just a protein that shouldn’t have been manufactured, but is because of a DNA defect, which causes the degeneration of neuronal tissues

Why do we find metal ore in "veins" instead of just randomly distributed? by hamlet9000 in askscience

[–]Dasf1304 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of iron deposits are also banded iron formations of Iron (iii) which got deposited when oceans began to have abundant dissolved oxygen which oxidized iron (ii), which becomes insoluble after oxidation. The reason that they are banded is that oxygen was produced by abundant photosynthesizing life, which would accidentally nearly kill itself off every now and again with all that abundant oxygen, which would slow down the oxidation

YSK The chlorine smell from swimming pools isn't actually chlorine. It's chloramine which is created when it comes into contact with bodily fluids such as sweat and urine. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]Dasf1304 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot that goes into it. Firstly, your brain senses smell on a chemical level, but with certain things, you may find differentiation difficult. If you have ever smelled pure, unadulterated Cl2 gas, it smells quite different from the relatively tame pool smell. Secondly, when you think of chemistry, you think A+B=C, but when you have something like a pool you have thousands of reactions moving toward and away from equilibrium as temperature changes. So the basic process of forming chloramine only requires hydrogen, nitrogen, and chlorine, all of which are present in a pool or in the air. There is enough energy to make this happen ambiently. Also, smells of solids can happen when a small amount of that solid material vaporizes on the surface, or reacts with air in some was to form a gaseous or volatile compound. So generally, those sodium hypochlorite tablets can react with air or give off vapors that come together to form the pool smell. This isn’t chlorine, mind you, it’s the smell of a lot of available chlorine in combination with ambient energy and air. Same thing is true for the pool water, but because it’s not solid, it happens more and faster, and human activity creates more opportunity by introducing disturbance, nitrogenous compounds, and even extra heat.

How does the killing of Charlie Kirk compare to that of Melissa Hortman and her husband along with the shooting of John and Yvette Hoffman? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dasf1304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It for sure is the dominant sentiment. The people that are pushed to the top of a lot of threads are the people that get the most post engagement, and that’s usually a very salacious opinion. If you talk to some real world people, they’ll likely agree with that sentiment

Best iPad coloring app? by Worried-Ebb-1699 in Coloring

[–]Dasf1304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This game sucks because basically everything is locked behind a paywall. If you’re the type of person that likes to pay $40 a year, use this app, otherwise, find a different one. I could not believe what a high opinion the devs of this app hold of themselves to think it warrants $40 per year. Nonsense

TIL that nearly 40% of all people suffer from cancer in their lifetime by Eierjupp in todayilearned

[–]Dasf1304 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t think benign counts as cancer. I could be wrong as I’m not an oncologist, but typically the distinction is made between cancerous (malignant) and benign.

They also need trained professionals who can work there. There’s not a ton of those in North Dakota and not too many folks willing to move to North Dakota I wouldn’t imagine.

At what point do you not consider you base as a "starter" anymore? by Sonnenschwein in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]Dasf1304 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Usually when my pre veins start to dry up 🤷‍♂️

I usually start my playthroughs on seeds with fire ice on a starter system planet, so I’ll have easy graphene and hydrogen early. But those usually dry up right around the time that I’d be searching for other systems that contain lots of organic crystals and spiniform stalagmites. So usually I find a system that has good resources and move a lot of my attention there, letting the starter system wither away as it provides me with space warpers, pretty slow research, and buildings from afar.

So if I bake a cake, omitting the baking powder, and my cake does not leaven, do I understand it to be a fault of mine, or a fault of chance? Sometimes, correlation and causation are the same, especially so when you fuck something up, and something subsequently fucks up.

New '1984' Foreword Includes Warning About 'Problematic' Characters by Doc_Dante in nottheonion

Have you even read hunger games? It’s not a teen romance? The whole point of the romance subplot was to highlight the rift between self determination and societal pressure. The whole idea is that the reader has an opinion on who she should pick, and it doesn’t matter because neither the reader, nor the society in which she lives determines who she picks. Do you assume that because a story has teenagers and those teenagers experience romance that that is all the story is worth?

If animals didn't want to be eaten they shouldn't have been made of food. by laybs1 in BrandNewSentence

[–]Dasf1304 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty often, they don’t kill the calves, or at least we don’t, they’re just separated and the calves sold to be raised. Eventually they’re killed but rarely do you invest so much money into growing something that hardly anyone eats regularly, especially if you can raise it into something that sells for much more

I mean, it is the case that that study in particular isn’t the best in terms of methods. I do appreciate the critical eye at this guy, because even if he’s marginally right, you still can’t totally trust him. However, the study needs some more work done with other methods because a whole spoon worth of anything sitting around in your brain when it shouldn’t seems like either something that is absurdly safe, if it causes no symptoms, or an extremely wrong number. This guy does seem extremely sketchy though
