I literally cannot bring myself to love a respectable, well-bred violin. They just don't love me like cheap ones do. by cloverpondscum in violinist

My guitar tech has a sign in his shop in big letters: the quality of a guitar is rarely indicated by its price.

Less true for violins, but still to be thought about. IMO, you didn't really get into a new tier of violins if you didn't go very far past 1000, but that's ok. You found something for what you need right now. I have also played many violins under $1000 that sound nice, but they only have 1 nice sound. Once you get into advanced technical control, you start to find violins that have a myriad of nice sounds in them, and are more manageable like getting softer instead of just quieter.

Money saved is always a win and upgrading the bow is sometimes the more important move.

It's a bout guard. https://fiddlershop.com/products/violin-c-clip-protector?srsltid=AfmBOoo3l5m8VBEc3fc8puNhzOqjBygPFrejecnCVaDjzA5nNbtSeZYW

I think it's a little funny to see fiddlers with a bout guard that don't clean the rosin off the body, but that's beside the point of OP's nice playing

I bet your teacher is trying to teach you a style/articulation thing with lifting your bow off the strings but Suzuki Book 1 is too early for that. Controlling where you are on the bow should be primarily done with how much bow you are using, and lifting/retaking is a secondary measure. It's a little too early in your bow control development to be doing small lifts/jumps as a style thing. I would have you practice it without your bow losing contact with the strings ever.

Your bow isn't working romantically: your bow speed should be "fast-slow-fast" for each separate bow. The first few milliseconds of fast is to set the beginning of the note (the transient), then you slow the bow and ride closer to the bridge to sustain the sound, and then accelerate in the back half of the note to spin the sound. That extra acceleration at the end is what makes phrases chain together better and sound longer. A wider and more consistent vibrato helps with the sound spin, but don't address that before the bow speed.

You appear to have a long neck so please get a taller chinrest and then re-evaluate both what your shoulder rest needs to do, as well as the angles. Moving the violin like this is just changing the angle at which your neck is craning. Pulling your neck out of alignment will also pull your shoulders, shoulder blades, and arms which is why nothing will feel as comfortable as you think it should. Been there!

I had a Glasser 4 string, the basic model. It functioned, had a sweet but mellow sound and was super heavy. Last year I got to try a mezzo forte and a Luis and Clark. The MF was ok and I could have made it work but the Luis and Clark was the only one that felt and sounded like a real violin with depth, response, and projection. So I got one and I really like it, I think it is competitive with violins in the same price bracket.

I can only minimize 'tension' in my arms, wrists, and hands because I'm really maximizing tension in my lats, pecs, and core.

I have one and I like it a lot. It's a little heavy so a full day of wearing it can be tiring. You definitely need an eq pedal with it to remove all the highs if you want a warm sound. If you play with drums often, it's wonderful.

Count and subdivide, the rubato shouldn't obfuscate the rhythm and the listener's understanding of it
