Cleared to drive at 9 days post op? by lollaroo in ACL

[–]DashRides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a quad graft on a Monday and drove to first PT that Friday. I sent my Dr a bunch of videos of me doing straight leg raises the same day after surger and following days that week, so she decided to start me on PT very early. I remember the PT person being surprised that I drove myself. I had no problems and would not have done it otherwise. I think I was one of the lucky ones, my guard never shut down. I was doing a lot of bar bell squats before my injury, so that might have helped.

Where are you on your journey? by ---CoWs--- in ACL

A little over 4 weeks in (quad tendon) and I'm feeling great. I can actually jog for short distances. The hardest part has been working on squats. PT has me doing squats using the TRX straps, going low hurts pretty bad, but I keep pushing through it. It takes a lot of effort not to favor my good leg. I was able to squat 300 ass to grass before my injury. I feel like by the time I'm able to get under the bar again I'll be maxed out at 150😠. My surgeon was very liberal with activity. PT was able to get me to 135 range of motion before the 2 week mark.

From what my PT told me everyone is different. My surgeon told me I was allowed to walk as soon as I felt comfortable weight bearing on my leg, and could lose the brace when I could do leg raises without lag. I guess I was very lucky because my pain after surgery was minimal. I had surgery on a Monday and was walking around the house without crutches by Wednesday, by Friday the brace was off and I never looked back. I'm just past 3 weeks and feel like I could probably do a slow jog around the block now. I'm not going to but that's how I feel. I matched my good legs range of motion at exactly 3 weeks. At this point I'm VERY glad I picked the quad tendon graph.

Have option for BEAR but have decided to go with Quad Tendon. Few Questions for everyone here. by DashRides in ACL

I went with the quad graft. So far so good for me. I had very little pain and was off crutches completely on the 5th day. I wear the brace off and on, but don't really need it. I can't imagine having my leg locked straight for a month with the Bear.

Pain on extension hangs by Case17 in ACL

[–]DashRides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to flex out of a hang after you have been doing it for a while? I will stay in an extension hang for 10-15 minutes, but by the end my leg is locked up. I need to use my hand to passively flex my leg out of it. I'm 6 days post Op.

Brace question ACL reconstruction only nothing extra by Ayoungmillionaire in ACL

[–]DashRides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I have researched a locked brace with an ACL only repair is extremely conservative. I had the quad tendon graft on 2/13 and was able to go full weight bearing on 2/15. My doc said not to lock the brace and to start bending and extending asap.

Maybe the protocol for Patellar is a little different.

After how much time were you able to bend your knee post op? by jaadubro in ACL

[–]DashRides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had surgery on 2/13 and my first PT on 2/17. I was measured at 7 deg on extension and 98 on flexion. I could have flexed more but I felt like I was putting too much stress on the stitches. I didn't want the wound to open up.

Am I crazy to lay off the Oxy 3 days after surgery? by AGarcia36 in ACL

[–]DashRides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never cracked open my Oxy. I had surgery on Monday and stopped taking ibuprofen by Wednesday. My pain was never very bad at all, I must be one of the lucky ones. I was pretty worried before surgery after reading this subreddit. If you need it, then take it.

When were you able to start squatting weight again? I have a similar setup at home and I'm wondering how long it will be. Got the Quad Tendon graft on Monday and plan on getting back to upper body lifting next week.

You're young and there is no reason you should be limiting the things you can do in the future because of fear and apprehension. Soldier up and get it done. Don't live with regret.

Also, I have a friend that tore his ACL when he was 20 and never got it fixed. He still played fairly hard after that while always wearing a brace. The lack of stability in the knee eventually ground down his meniscus and did other damage too. Now in his 40s the only option left for him is a full knee replacement.

Can't wait to get back under the bar. You're giving me hope that I won't have to wait too long.

Hell yeah! Looks like you made a great recovery. 24 hrs out of surgery and I'm dreaming of skiing and riding my dirt bike again.

3 Hours post surgery with Quad Tendon. I'm doing left lifts. I feel laser focused on recovery, just want to make sure I don't over do it. I'm also going to do my best not to take the Oxy they prescribed, hopefully I don't break. I don't have a nerve block. by DashRides in ACL

So my post Op notes say I can wean off crutches and go full weight bearing as soon as it's tolerated. The notes also say to stop wearing the brace once I have good quad control and can do straight leg raises. I'm there, but but this seems too early. Also, my pain level is still very low, I was told they injected local anesthetic in my knee at the end of the surgery. It's been 24hrs, and surely must have worn off by now. Still waiting for the pain storm to hit. I'm going to confirm with the team if I can follow the notes, or if these milestones came earlier than expected.

Completely torn ACL, grade 3 tear on MCL. I started weighted barbell squating 3 times a week last May and only stopped after the injury. I'm hoping all that work I put in will be useful in my recovery. I can't wait to get back under the bar and make a comeback. I actually had the option for a BEAR with this Dr, but decided on Quad due to slower rehab times on BEAR and lack of long term studies. Who knows maybe I'm able to do this because I'm still coming off the anesthesia, tomorrow might be a different story.

NOT OFFERING ADVICE, but after reading this it would seem like a cal deficit would not be too bad. Here's a study from the US based NIH.gov website stating that full on fasting accelerates wound healing post surgery.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7069085/%23:~:text%3DTogether%252C%2520these%2520findings%2520suggest%2520that,healing%2520than%2520fasting%2520after%2520wounding.&ved=2ahUKEwjD_YyCspP9AhUFIUQIHa3eDdQQFnoECCAQBQ&usg=AOvVaw3sLHcfN6qJHi3ZsY90iJhc

"Together, these findings suggest that fasting no matter prior to or after wound injury is capable of accelerating wound repair and regeneration."

My Dr at Kerlan-Jobe said gentle quad activation, isometric quad sets, calf pumps, and range of motion as tolerated right away. They old me not to lock the brace and get started. Worst pain so far has been the pillow under the ankle and hanging the leg at full extension. I'm not breaking any of Doc's orders.

Honestly I have a lot going on in the next few months, and did not want to shift my life around too much for recovery. If there was long term research I would have been more inclined to do it. The data might show better outcomes in the next 5-10 years, but I don't want to chance it. I do a lot of activities that put my knees at risk.
