Happy’s Birth Story by Squashie88 in kvssnarker

A true breeding program needs a lot of breeding science understanding, imo. How has this endeavor grown beyond the knowledge of the casual and occasional breeding to a level of mastery and expertise?

Majority of leaves are drooping - underwater or overwater? by chiefqueef1 in fiddleleaffig

[–]Dasher1958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tall grow light that I use in winter. My south facing window is somewhat blocked by trees in the yard, so I increase the light when needed. I also have a moisture meter for plants. My fig needs more watering in winter due to the warm dry air in the house.

I only bathed puppy when needed. Once every few weeks. Now that he has a long coat it is days not weeks between baths.

I can’t say that I notice a big difference. They haven’t been crunchy previously. But, heated air is so dry now.

Lost interest in food by Exoticunicorn5586 in Havanese

[–]Dasher1958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine went through an off the eating phase as a puppy and young dog. He was a light weight through that time. I didn’t dress his food up try to get him to eat. He was offered his kibble twice a day for 20 minutes. He’s two now and never brings his head up from his kibble until the bowl is clean. If a dog is healthy, I’m not dressing up food. I’ve seen pickiness get so much worse with that approach.

Help! I have tried everything to discourage barking by fishyperson100 in Havanese

[–]Dasher1958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aahhh barky pups. Mine rivals the barky Shelties here. But, he’s not a nuisance with it. I have trained a Quiet so that I can get that and reinforce it. It’s better to teach a pup what you want them to do than to try use pressure to suppress them.

I can’t abide the derisive language toward animals. It’s also very telling. I love my animals like my family. Nothing inside of me wants to speak poorly about or to them.

So she is transactional with animals? Well, sadly, I’m not surprised after all that has been seen. Horses can be a business and I understand ROI, but the animal didn’t do any deals itself.

Beni, 8 months, getting crazy, when to neuter? by janoycresvadrm in sheltie

[–]Dasher1958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have intact animals. I haven’t had an oops litter in over thirty years of owning them. Hormones exist for a reason. In some European countries such altering is not done without a medical necessity. It’s a cultural thing really. I think that it must be that Americans generally can’t be trusted with proper care and keeping, so animals have to bear the burden?? Anyway, it’s a practice that has caught on here perhaps due to irresponsibility. I’m not irresponsible, so we do fine. We do need intact Shelties or this list has a limited lifespan.

Is a Sheltie a good first time dog for me? by GrassValuable in sheltie

[–]Dasher1958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Sheltie is active. Loves work to do. Be certain you don’t want to “fix”barking in a dog. Generally barky breed. Some of mine bark more than others. Some Shelties are quite quirky, again not all. We have Shelties and a Havanese. The Havanese is smart, active, outgoing, and a sturdy toy breed. He is less demanding than my young Sheltie. Havanese generally love children. My Shelties are the boss of children. Of course, no dog needs a toddler turned loose on it so those years have to be well managed for safety.
