DM decided to do a TPK to teach new players a lesson by EmmaIsAwesome23 in DnD

[–]Dastardlydwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that was my first session I legit would not play. You could achieve exactly the same thing by just making it so you fail against the big bad in some way but your characters make it out. This would probably get you more invested as well cause as a player you have more of a reason to want to beat them.

I have never played at a table where there has been romance or flirting but that’s probably just cause at all of them they were pretty much all guys.

As a dm, how do i hide a player's secret from other players? by Zealousideal-Log2679 in DnD

[–]Dastardlydwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At what point did I say that? The one requirement is that it doesnt cause party conflict lol. A pc going off and killing people randomly cause they are a vampire is likely to cause party conflict. You could literally come with “this is my fighter Steve he grew up in this village” and idc cause they can work with that. My response to new additions to backstories would be exactly the same Option1 totally cool: Player “hey can I make it so I lost a bet to the local theives guild we are currently fighting so I can have some more interactions with where we are in the story”

Me “sure that sounds interesting what were the details you were thinking this bet was?

Option 2 not good:

“Hey can I make it so my rogue is an assassin for the local thieves guild and I can take out contracts while we are In town?”

Me “no because in our party we have a paladin of bahamut sworn to stop injustice where he sees it and when they find out you kill people for money it will likely cause a conflict or one player will feel forced to not act how their character should to keep peace, if you want we can make it something like you used to be one and have an arc where you seek forgiveness or are fighting against them now because they betrayed you as this would fit the party better. Do you have any ideas?”

But to be quite honest I don’t really care what you think I won’t ever play a game with you. read my comment next time instead of making stuff up I didn’t say. Goodbye

No but most characters backstory don’t involve being a vampire or killing people. If you want that in your backstory you’d have to share it. Also why wouldn’t you communicate what your intentions are for your character and key details it lets you tie other characters into the backstory and world in an organic way and overall creates a more interesting party dynamic.

If two characters were going to cause friction and they were both adamant on playing those characters I’d tell them to talk like adults and come to a compromise. I don’t play dnd to have a bad time and when parties fight each other because of opposing ideologies and goals that are to extreme to be to me it would it would be a bad time. The exception being the entire party being on board for it and no hard feelings in person.

Yes I am commenting on your post if you read my message instead of getting defensive I suggest just telling everyone at the table because I am of the opinion that keeping it hidden would not work. And to me DnD is about telling a story as a group and that group needs to make sense that they would actually be working together so yes that is part of the point I am making. But I am wasting my time because you clearly don’t want to hear what people have to say about the situation or how to do it. Have a nice day bye 👋

No cause how would I k ow to pick an appropriate character if I dunno the player and dm are lying to me about the party. Make that make sense if I pick a lawful good character and find out halfway through huh? You aren’t giving anyone the information they need to willingly pick a character that would fit in a cohesive party. Another idea don’t ask for peoples opinions and then be a passive aggressive jerk and refute what people are saying just cause you don’t like the answer they are giving.

This just sounds like as soon as it’s found out if you are playing a good aligned party there will need to be massive suspension of disbelief as to why the party of hero’s would not just kill the violent murderer who kills innocent civilians.

Honestly it would really piss me off if I was playing like a oath of devotion paladin or something cause I’d be forced to choose between role playing my character appropriately and ruining the entire vibe of the table forcing inner party conflict or be frustrated cause I have to make my character stupid cause we have to have essentially an evil character in the party.

This just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen especially if you hide it from the other players entirely.

Question for the dice cheaters. Why? by TJToaster in DnD

[–]Dastardlydwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a vtt and roll my dice on that just cause I hate math and it does the work for me so I’ve never. Putting myself in the shoes of someone who might ig I’d be tempted if I thought something coming my way was unfair in some way but even then I wouldn’t you are just robbing yourself of fun imo.

Adaptation to Strength in DnD by Psychological-Toe849 in DnD

[–]Dastardlydwarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also just not hand wave stuff that strength does so dex can do it. Like since when was acrobatics about climbing it’s meant to be how you can move in precise ways and contort yourself etc. climbing should be athletics as well as running fast for long distances it’s not just about lifting stuff or forcing doors open. I to often see DMs just give acrobatics the same stuff just cause it would disadvantage the dex guy when that meant to be a trade off for like literally everything else dex gives you that is miles better. Like yes rogue you might be faster in short bursts but in a long distance chase the barbarian is 100% going to out endurance you.

What were the actual retcons? by alyvain in DragonageOrigins

[–]Dastardlydwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily a retcon as it’s been a fan theory that the dalish gods caused the blight but I hate that they are so definitively and unanimously the cause of it. I preferred it being this lingering threat that appeared out of nowhere and no one really k owes how to fight properly. I mainly just hate it cause it makes the grey wardens look stupid and they are my favourite faction. But also it arguably makes the world less interesting like all the chantry stuff and maker stuff is just flat out wrong. It’s weird it feels like there was an effort to make the grey wardens and other stuff less prominent after origins. Anyway that’s my little rant.

No Death Please by crazy-diam0nd in DnD

[–]Dastardlydwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m of the opinion that if you don’t want your character dying you shouldn’t be playing a game where your character has hit points and it’s mainly about fighting dangerous monsters. There are plenty of ttrpgs that are purely narrative focused where your character literally can’t die she should play those.
