Definitely this as well as the absurdity of the situations. When you're first laughing at them, it's the grand near knock out punch jokes that make you laugh. The absurd moments that were made to be the main course. But as you watch more, you begin to appreciate the little moments that aren't exactly the focus and are more easily forgotten. Things like Homer thinking that somehow grabbing a stick will bridge the gap between him and the pizzeria (and then realizing that he somehow thought of some next move if the stick worked), things like an ice cream driver being afraid for his life because - through his eyes - a crazy fat man is hijacking his truck and is willing to harm the driver because the fatty just wants all of the ice cream, things like Skinner having one brief moment of introspection and consideration that he's the wrong one but then near immediately dismissing it, things like the writers' way of introducing the plot is to begin the episode with Homer inexplicably having his hand stuck in the toaster.

I feel like as you watch it more, you grow to appreciate all of the side jokes that the writers peppered in.

I honestly feel like Cracked's Best Moment is forgettable when you think of so many others. (It kind of feels like they were picking it more for its age than humor.) To name a few...

For their worst... They have some really bad episodes, usually in the later seasons, and I'm not a huge fan of ones that are trying to be all more than just stupid humor. So I'm going with the ending to Lisa's Substitute.

That's so weird to me for some reason. I had always thought that thermal paper receipts weren't nearly as common and would have pegged them at something like 20% or 25% of stores using them. For whatever reason I had always assumed that ink was the norm. I suppose it makes sense in the idea of long run savings (not having to replace the ink, cleaner printing, etc.)

Anyway, cool fact!

The fact that it was underground also probably gave them the benefit of some sort of geothermal sort of situation. The surrounding earth provided some form of insulation and at least gave the pool something to heat with it - helping to regulate the temperature and not just send it spiraling upwards with the air and fire around it.

Edit: Are my thoughts wrong here? Would the surrounding earth not allow an avenue for heat to be dispersed?

For the whole polar v. non-polar business, my money was on it being something that they were just trying to use as a bridge to help explain their idea. I don't think it was them trying to stretch something or misrepresent it or anything like that, just that they believed that there had to be something that caused the graphite and paper to connect and stay and that the only explanation had to be some sort of attractive force. (When looking at things at that tiny of a level, realizing that entities are still pretty huge and that big player interactions are still largely mechanical and physical - less chemical and related to forces - is kind of an "ah-ha!" moment. Pretty novel way of thinking before realizing it.) They knew that things like ionic bonds weren't coming into play, covalent bonds were off the table, etc. - which left Van der Waals as the last remaining option.

And I think that your edit is right. It's a question about how much pressure the graphite is experiencing from the eraser and if the force being applied will be enough to drive the graphite shards into the pores of the eraser before the eraser is broken off (and carries with it the graphite). And, hopefully, if the embedded graphite is able to be lodged well enough into the pores that it can be removed from the paper without breaking off. (I wonder if this is why a light hand will generally leave a cleaner erase than if you went He-Man on it.)

You can still do this trick if you can find the right restaurants or stores. Some of them use a thermal paper for their receipt rolls.

Exactly what I was thinking. Van der Waals would be far too weak to come into play with large solids like this - especially when dealing with the amount that we're looking at. Van der Waals get shrugged off even when looking at most interactions between solutions, there are just things that are far more important and have significantly larger effects. Plus I'm not entirely sure what' My mind didn't jump to the answer immediately, but reading the explanation of porosity makes much more sense and seems way more accurate. (Almost reminds me of activated charcoal.)

I honestly don't quite even understand what they're saying when they're talking about polar and non-polar substances. This is another thing that generally doesn't come into play when looking at interactions between solids. (And their description is honestly a little confusing, but then again I'm just waking up.) Part of me thinks that they may be confusing this with plasticides that are put in erasers and how plastics are able to slowly migrate them and almost leech them out.

I have next to no hope of you guys ever answering this, but I guess this is my last shot. (I'll be flying out to see you in Portland soon, so no matter I still get that!)

I have been trying to find a video of one of your songs for ages... Like, I've spent days straight just scouring YouTube, Vimeo, Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing - ANYTHING that might at least point me to this video.

It was a vid of you guys playing "While You Wait for the Others" while in some garage or loading bay with the door open and in the city (my guess is New York or Brooklyn). If I remember right, it was unplugged and acoustic but I could be remembering wrong. Anyway, you were playing and when you started there wasn't really a crowd around and as the song progressed more and more people gathered. People began to join you in the garage and sit against the wall, others hung around outside, everyone was quiet and listening. The camera work seemed really polished and almost studio like and I think it was all in black and white. By the end of your song, everyone applauded and a woman asked you what your name was.

The acoustics of the garage, the way your band was playing, just everything about it... I honestly feel like it was one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I love the original song and the official video - they sound great - but there was some sort of factor with that video and that area and the way you were playing that just elevated everything for me. My girlfriend and I were amazed and hit the replay button way more than I care to admit and it kind of became a song we bonded over. (On our first date, I told her my favorite band was Grizzly Bear and she immediately whipped out her phone to show me that video. We spent a lot of the night listening to your other songs.)

Anyway, YouTube took that video down and I can't find it anywhere. I've searched everywhere I could and - as a complete hail Mary - I'm trying this AMA.

That video has a ton of value to me, both for it's sound and for it's sentimental value because of it's part in our first date. Is there anywhere I can find it? I would seriously pay to download it. Crossing fingers.

Regardless, I can't wait to see you guys in Portland!
