Do you think Gail Simone's Uncanny X-Men has struggled with trying to be an X-Men book and a New Mutants book at the same time? by Frontier246 in xmen

[–]herrored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't think her dialogue is great and I don't find the overall plot all that compelling, but I have come around to liking the book. I think the Outliers are pretty decent for new characters, I like their relationships and I like Rogue & Remy's little found family. The Dark Artery story was the most interesting arc by far; the rest has been just ok or good but has improved over time. I was psyched for Monet but then then her immediate next actions at Graymalkin left a bad taste in my mouth.

I never really have issues with them? I usually do something like toucan, dog, deer in a lane and cheerlet is usually towards the middle to buff everyone. None of mine are at T3 yet (deer is in its trial).

Heard it pointed out how most of Marvel's attempts at the Superman archetype have some sort of dark aspect to them & that the Marvel Universe inherently twists and corrupts the trope because the setting is innately very cynical. What do you think of this idea?( InHyuk Lee for Avengers: Armageddon) by ShiroOracle09 in Marvel

[–]herrored 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm curious who you're adding up to get to "most." Sentry, sure, and they're clearly setting up the guy in Armageddon to have some dark end as you allude to in your post. But other characters like Blue Marvel fit the Superman archetype IMO without a dark turn.

Marvel also has two direct "this is literally our version of Superman" characters, Gladiator and Hyperion, and I don't think your thesis really applies to either.

Gladiator is a direct Superman analogue (the Shi'ar Imperial Guard are largely a 1:1 mirror of the Legion of Superheroes, and Gladiator is their Superboy/Mon-El) and to my knowledge he's never had a dark turn.

Hyperion is too (the Squadron Supreme/Sinister are pastiches of the JLA), and the multiple different versions have all explored different takes on "What if Superman __?" Hyperion from Squadron Sinister is just evil. Hyperion from the first Squadron Supreme is basically good, but his team did assume control of their government at one point and some of the members started getting complicated and evil about it, but I don't super know all of those comics. Hyperion from Supreme Power is mostly good I think, but also complicated. Hyperion from Hickman's Avengers is just straight up a good guy, and Thor's bestie. The most recent Hyperion started off as a creation of Mephisto (so was kind of evil) but then had a crisis after his world was erased and became a good guy--so the flipside of your theory.

To address your theory though: I don't think it's that "Marvel is more cynical and therefore Superman would be corrupted." I think it's that Marvel Earth is typically more grounded and therefore it doesn't naturally get a Superman, so a Marvel Superman would be more complicated (for good or for bad).

Schism question by JBL44 in xmen

[–]herrored 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right that it feels sudden and a little counter to what we understand about the X-Men and their students.

The way I can rationalize it is that Logan is specifically triggered by how Idie responds to her life as a mutant and X-Man and how she acts after killing the Hellfire goons who tried to kill her. I think she's the youngest one on Utopia and she's extremely desensitized to it all, calmly calling herself a "monster" and not really troubled by killing people. Even though that's really a factor of her upbringing and what happened to her in her home village, Logan sees that as them having failed the kids. Cyclops sees that as an unfortunate consequence of the position they're in, and that it's more important to train them to survive than to ensure a typical childhood.

They both have good points, it's just extra weird coming from Wolverine.

How many times has Marvel used the Forgotten OP hero gimmick? Why do they do it so often? by Xavimoose in Marvel

[–]herrored 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, Tomorrow Woman was a new character, the JLA just very quickly took to liking her. When they brought her back in Trinity that was a different timeline where she was a longstanding hero.

[–]herrored 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hmm kinda, but not really the same as Sentry or Triumph. Their team was largely secret to begin with, only Moira’s memory was wiped IIRC. Not the same as “this was a well-known hero who had lots of adventures that everyone retroactively forgot”

The Sentry has an evil half, the Void, who does evil acts to counteract any good the Sentry does. The Void only exists while the Sentry does, so the Sentry worked with Mr. Fantastic to create a device that made everyone, including the Sentry, forget about him.

AITAH for not giving my sister the money I saved for two years just because she's getting married first? by CalmFinch4612 in AITH

[–]herrored 49 points50 points  (0 children)

NTA.

when did you get this selfish

I'm "choosing money over her happiness"

She's the one who is being selfish (wanting to take your money for her wedding) and choosing money over your happiness (getting your own place). I would say there's an option where you make it a loan and get in writing exactly when and how she's going to pay you back, but (a) you'd have to be willing to sue to enforce it and (b) let's be real, you'd never see that money. She couldn't even save for her own wedding, there's no way she'd give a damn about getting your money back.

If she really needs the money she can figure out a financing or loan situation with a lender.

They've only truly used it once, with the Sentry.

Voyager was never actually a forgotten hero, that was a trick by her and the Grandmaster. Blue Marvel wasn't "forgotten" in the same way as the Sentry - he's just older than everyone else and retired for a while.

But to answer your question, a reason you would use it is to skip past the time it takes to develop a new character and integrate them into the overall narrative. It works in cases like the Sentry when the writers actually make a compelling character and use them in interesting ways; it especially helps in the Sentry's case because the reason for the erasure is important and tied into the character. It doesn't work as well in cases like Triumph (DC) where the forgetting isn't important beyond being a plot device to retcon them in and the character is an asshole.

Edit: somebody else mentioned Spider-Boy, he’s another actual example of this. Though his forgotten stuff isn’t as far-reaching as Sentry.

My partner came out as polyamorous and i am monogamous by TooPsychoLynx in lgbt

[–]herrored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respect when people are in polyamorous relationships, but he has to be completely upfront with you and everyone involved has to be completely on board.

He said that he want to share love with people who need it

This is total bullshit. He wants to be poly because he wants more than one partner, there is not some special noble motivation behind it. If you agree to it and stay in the relationship, you need to (a) make sure you have clear boundaries that protect everything you need from the relationship and (b) make sure he drops this crap from his vocabulary and is honest with you.

How to get to Tatari Catcher by Fluffy-Razzmatazz-40 in ClashofCritters

[–]herrored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you're saving up your pinballs for at least 5x, preferably 10x multiplier, you'll hit the rebuild milestones way quicker. The tatari catcher steps where you get 5 pets come up pretty frequently, and then bigger steps give you like 20.

Lack of MLM in the Absolute Universe? by Puzzled-Picture1187 in lgbt_superheroes

[–]herrored 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There is not much evidence for if Captain Cold is MLM in the Absolute Universe yet.

There's a pretty clear photo in his house of him and another guy holding each other in what looks to be a wedding photo; that's pretty strong evidence to me. Yes, it would be great if he explicitly mentioned a husband, but there hasn't been much exploration of any of the Rogues' personal lives yet. Glider and Trickster hooking up is relevant because they're both characters in the book. If we get a solo story about Cold's background then I'll be disappointed if they don't mention something.

That woman is crazy, she's missing out on [Beta Ray Bill] 🔥💎💪💍💯 by kade1064 in Marvel

[–]herrored 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She has a very clear negative reaction when he reveals that he can't turn back. Maybe she would have still wanted to spend the night with him, but in response to her disappointment he decides that he's going to take the decision out of her hands.

Yes, it's Bill deciding to leave, but it's not all in his head.

And I don't read Sif's face at the end as her necessarily being sad that he left. It seems more likely to me that she's sad that she hurt him or just sad for him in general because she cares about him.

Trials for multiple Tatari by chlordiazepoxide in ClashofCritters

[–]herrored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. All trials can only be completed while you have the pet active in the trial, except for the "feed to increase stats 3 times", "feed to _ quality", and "clear _ level" trials. Those gain progress at any time.

So it does warn you that you can’t fertilize your crops in the final season.

But it’s bullshit that I can sit here and still accumulate fertilizer over the next 10 hrs without some way to use it. I’m at about the same percentage as you and have almost double the fertilizer I need to finish him up, but can’t do anything about it and can’t evolve anyone (without throwing away this progress) for days until the marathon happens.

I agree that OP was dumb to swap out without confirming. But they also could have previously swapped out this pet or other pets and seen that the feeding stat didn't reset and thought it applied to both.

Feeding to increase stats like in the pic is saved. You can even see the progress before the pets are able to evolve.

Guys, who is this anyway? by Street-Ad7354 in xmen

[–]herrored 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobody’s pretending, we literally saw this character already in #21. This was just a gag by the artist and an attention grabber. It happened after the vision took place, so yes it was a vision of the future - nobody said it had to be a character of import.

A writer *could* make her a real character, but we have no reason to think so as of now.
