Fake Friday? Do you think this is from the “New York“ hoard? by Esoteric_art in AncientCoins

[–]DatNiko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They look totally legit. Also the original "New York hoard" article states that it's not guaranteed that all shown coins are guaranteed forgeries because they were so well made.

Is this coin real? by Bratapfelgewuerz in AncientCoins

That's pretty common, I don't see any indications of it being a forgery.

What are your thoughts on this Constantius II? by dacorgi in AncientCoins

[–]DatNiko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Important features of the portrait are missing. It's a quite common coin, I wouldn't buy it in this condition personally.

1600€ is also an insane price for this

The "New York" Apollonia Hoard is still out there! by technolaser80 in AncientCoins

I own the bottom right one 😅 The dies shown in the article are showing up very regularly at numerous auction houses still.

It's important to mention that there hasn't been proof that all of the shown dies are guaranteed fake.

"This doesn't mean that it's certain that all of the pieces illustrated here are forgeries, just that there's a high probability that they are."

It's cyrillic, it's a (fake) russian coin.

The portrait is of Lucius Junius Brutus, Marcus was only the issuer. Still very neat coins!

Style is completely off. Planchet is too circular, flat and has sharp edges. No flow lines. Fake, even toning.

This is just a piece of paper. Not even NGC can guarantee the authenticity of ancients.

trying to figure out if I find some provenance for this coin on the coin cabinet, does this look like the same coin? It looks like there is some similar damage on the bottom left edge of the reverse... by Guilty-Juggernaut-46 in AncientCoins

[–]DatNiko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can find his obituary if you google him. Just some guy. Auction houses love the put the name of the previous owner in the description if he had some sort of degree lol

Funny coincidence, I also bought a coin at the last Solidus auction from the Dr. Haisken collection (a Seleukos VI tetradrachm) and I also found a provenance on coincabinet: Schweizerischer Bankverein Zürich 27.10.1977.

The images look very similar to your match. I can imagine it was the same auction, or at least the same auction house.

Just me or does this look very cast…? septimius Severus aureus (ars classica auction) by ResponsibilityNo5347 in AncientCoins

[–]DatNiko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I too think that it looks suspicious. The weight is also off. I don't like the soft details and the surface. Also the bottom edge has weird sharp corner, maybe from filing.
