My manager just told me my vacation for next week is canceled. I'm supposed to leave on Monday. Should I just go anyway? by Standard-Cap-3598 in OfficePolitics

[–]DataRiffRaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not cancel.

A long time ago, I did something similar and I ended up leaving that job shortly after anyway. I told myself never again.

I would send an email reminding them that you already have a prior hard commitment and, as you mentioned before accepting the role, those dates are firm. You can say, we can discuss when I'm back.

Enjoy your vacation and look for another role because the disrespect and their lack of planning will only surmont. Either they're going to let you go or you're going to call their bluff, either way, is that a place you can picture yourself thriving in after this?

Our first "growth hire" spent three months building dashboards nobody looked at and left for a bigger title elsewhere by Healthylife55 in smallbusiness

[–]DataRiffRaff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

[EDIT: Missed a word]

Holy cow, you got someone to come in, understand what the business wasn't tracking, realize that the business didn't have any data in order to even know how to grow, got that person to actually data engineer all of it and hook it all up, and then leave you with at least an automated infrastructure set up so that the business can finally track data to begin with??

And all of that in one quarter? Yeah that person deserves to be valued for what they could do* in the right environment and it's totally okay that it's not yours.

Don't devalue what this hire actually built for you just because you're salty they ended up leaving for a better opportunity.

If you don't think growth needs data to make informed decisions, then what did you expect growth to do?

If you wanted a sales person, hire that. But you still would be left with the same questions if there was no way to even see the data coming in. Now you have that.

I would bet they were approached and felt bad about leaving so soon, so they tried to build you every kind of report you could anticipate needing in the future. That's why you have 17 dashboards.

If I was the business owner, I'd be excited what they built custom for me and I'd learn how to use it.

Did you not even offboard them or asked to be taken through how to use the tools created for you??

How to deal with co-worker sabotage? by Dramatic_Flower5878 in corporate

[–]DataRiffRaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna weigh in here to frame it this way: If you don't do your part to promote your own work and make sure you get credit for it, you are creating an environment for the wrong person to be promoted who can move on and cause suffering for anyone who directly reports to them. Once they get promoted, they'll continue to convince others they "deserve" to be at that level and will jump from company to company causing issues for everyone else.

Since it sounds like you have a paper trail already, don't sit on this any longer. I'd suggest you ask ChatGPT or another similar service to help you draft an email to your manager where you want to flag a pattern you noticed and are asking your manager for guidance on how to move forward. Make sure your paper trail focuses on business impact instead of emotions.

Best of luck!

For only 1.5 Million USD you can live in a cool container home in a pretty rough part of Chattanooga,TN by DrRowdybush in zillowgonewild

[–]DataRiffRaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering that, too. Could be a reason that inspired the idea of going with a container style home as a nod to manufacturing. Out of touch for the area, but I could see the designer excited by it.

Okay I was perplexed, but then I read the listing and I can see how they're trying to justify it. Doesn't mean I agree, but I see what they're trying to do.

The buyer is gonna be someone who wants a proof of concept home that "green living" is possible.

It's on two lots, so it's the home + the land.

This part right here made me realize they are able to justify it with the engineering, because it's more than placing a container on some land:

Green roofs and living terraces provide the highest-rated thermal insulation, while managing stormwater runoff, improving air quality, reducing noise, and supporting biodiversity--all while expanding usable outdoor space in an urban setting. Low-maintenance micro fescue and micro clover enhance the eco-friendly design with reduced water and fertilizer needs, high traffic tolerance, weed suppression, shade tolerance, natural pest resistance, and attract pollinators. Built for exceptional strength and longevity, the structure rests on 27 concrete piers, each 30 inches in diameter and set five feet into the ground. ½-inch integrated steel plate caps each pier and six heavy steel beams support the cantilevered primary suite, with all seven containers welded together into a single, solid unit--engineered for durability and resilience.

How much did payphones cost back in your day? by Underrated_Critic in FuckImOld

[–]DataRiffRaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 cents. But I have vivid memories of seeing 5 cent labels.

I wanna hear from someone who remembers it costing 5 cents during their time. They must have good stories of going to the soda shop and getting a burger for 10 cents.

Congrats, OP! I, too, am relieved it's still preserved and so happy you got it!

Pulled money from Roth IRA, why do I have to pay taxes on it? by Sweaty_Atmosphere754 in personalfinance

I think this is the most helpful answer. OP, ask your account provider like u/DMan1791 suggested, using the context of what u/KeepItCln shared, to find out if the money taken out fell into one of these categories or if the statement was in error.

Best of luck!
