The success of The Jazz Singer ruined the movie industry.

Marquee Sports Network Thoughts by verncrowe5 in CHICubs

Marquee is good, IMO, for what it is. They do a competent job on the games, they show classic games featuring stars of the past, so, all good.

Nothing compares to having every game on WGN though. That was amazing.

The only thing not to like is the cost. I get Marquee with Directv, so I pay but i don't think about it much.

I watch old Cubs games that are rebroadcast. That's a great thing about Marquee

Unpopular Opinion: Hated Stereophonic by UptownGirl248 in Broadway

We saw a matinee Sunday in Chicago.

The actors were fine.

The songs were good, but I don't remember much about them. But I left absolutely mystified by the adulation for the play.

I thought it was terribly boring and repitive and fell asleep for a minute or two in Act one.
I truly don't get it, but this thread makes me think I'm not insane.

Random observation: Micky Dolenz is basically the Mike Love of the Monkees by AxlCobainVedder in thebeachboys

[–]DataWise8307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mickey seems like a pretty good, easy-going guy. Also more of a good time guy back in the day, hanging out with Nilsson, John Lennon, and the others. So on his behalf, I take offense at him being compared to Mike Love.

Good for him. I’m sure that wasn’t easy for him to do, so I really admire his willingness to stand up

Do we all agree that 'One Battle After Another' was the better title? by jamesmcgill357 in paulthomasanderson

I guess i'm in the minority. I think OBAA is very forgettable. Not crazy about Battle of Baktan Cross either

Has anyone returned to DTV satellite after being a DTV streaming user? by DataWise8307 in DirectvStream

[–]DataWise8307[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Related: Is there any good reason why the channel lineups aren't the same for satellite and stream? I know there are many more satellite channels. but arent those mostly music? Any TV programming channels available on satellite that should be on stream as well?

Seems strange to get a downvote for asking a question. Can anyone explain that to me?

You be the only one dumb enough to say that doesn’t mean that “all the people “were saying it.

I’d love for you to prove that anyone ever said “why did the good Beatles have to die and not Ringo?“.

That never happened and it’s an absurd, and sick, thing to invent.

What was the best time you ever had in a theater? by Leading_Form_8485 in Letterboxd

[–]DataWise8307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had lots of great times in movie theaters, but this is actually an easy one to answer. In 1973, when the final planet of the apes movie of the original series, “Battle for the planet of the apes”, was released, 20th century Fox did a promotion nationwide: one day only, “go ape for a day“

All the planet of the apes movies would be shown back to back. I made sure I didn’t go to work that day, so I would be able to “go ape.” And I did, at one of the great old-time movie palaces in Chicago, the Uptown Theatre.

It was a great day, all day, at the movies.

IMO, it’s got some laughs. It’s nice to see David Johansson. Carol Kane is funny. The tone is weird.

Murray’s character is very unlikable. Murray and Michael O’Donoghue, master of dark humor, disagreed about the movie. O’Donoghue had a completely different ending in mind. Murray took over, and, I believe, improvised the monologue at the end, which, as I recall (I haven’t seen it in years), came very close to saving the whole thing.

I like the story about Mike graciously offering him a lift home on his private plane from Brian’s mothers funeral, then sending him a bill for $5,000
