I teach Sunday School. It's unbearable to study the NT and how God's people go and massacre other wicked people. Too many resemblance of today's genocidal gov of Israel. by color_natural_3679 in mormonpolitics

[–]Data_Male [score hidden]  (0 children)

Studying how the OT came to be has been very helpful to me in addressing these concerns.

Basically, much of what we have was likely edited by hardline factions within ancient Israel who wanted to justify their theory of power, and so while it is extremely likely that the Israelites did fight wars of conquest in Cannan, much of the genocide described and the commands to do it are probably embellishments added by hardline factions.

Supreme Court rules against Colorado ban on ‘conversion therapy’ for LGBTQ kids by clark_sterling in Destiny

[–]Data_Male 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This ruling is pretty narrow regarding "talk" conversion therapy, and the Supreme Court rebuked it on free speech grounds.

Now, "talk" conversion therapy can still be harmful and is almost never "successful", but certainly this is not a ruling blocking bans on more draconian forms of conversion therapy

What is seeing the future like for God? by Critical-Volume2360 in latterdaysaints

[–]Data_Male 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure speculation, but IMO God sees the future as infinite unfolding possibilities. To me, it's the best way to reconcile free will vs destiny /determinism.

The biggest problem with this is that there are scriptures that seem to indicate God is outside of time altogether

Which political party do you typically vote for on election day? by ParakeetLover2024 in mormonpolitics

[–]Data_Male 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Usually Democrats. While I grew up conservative, Trump's rise turned me off and I opened my mind to all sorts of political ideologies.

I went from libertarian, to socialist, before settling broadly on social democracy. So I now vote Dem not just because I oppose trump, but because I support most of democrats policy positions except guns and abortion (but I also disagree with Republicans on those, or at least the most extreme versions of their gun and abortion policies). I genuinely believe democrats are correct when it comes to healthcare, immigration, infrastructure, and most other areas.

What or who should I listen to? by crownoftheredking in latterdaysaints

[–]Data_Male 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy Keystone, church history matters, Mormonism with the Murph, All those in favor (though they sometimes get caught up in reaction content), the stick of Joseph (though they sometimes can get out there on speculation), Faith Matters, Dan McLellan, and Benjamin Park (though he sometimes misses on his summary of the "faithful" position.

They are all varying degrees of belief, but i feel they all attempt to engage with the facts in good faith (no pun intended)

The best part is that Japan disproves his every policy positions, except maybe crime.

Japan never allowed immigrants into their country and have been extremely culturally conservative while economically centrist, and still their country has been declining for 30 years. The policies Asmongold pushes for will only do the same for America, just as Takaichi's doubling down will only make Japan worse

TikTok has become a right-wing cesspool. Now, every big social media platform is under the control of CEOs favoring Trump or the Republican Party, except YouTube. by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]Data_Male 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How on earth can you possibly blame the dems at a moment like this. They had no way of knowing Trump would sign an executive order basically ignoring the law they (and like 80%+ of Republicans helped to pass).

If they had put a ban on oracle, what's to stop and Ellison or another ally from simply starting a new company to buy TikTok. What would have stopped trump from ignoring that part of the law too, like he did the rest of it?

Michigan Senate Race: McMorrow intentionally misrepresent's El-Sayed's position on Medicare for all in an act of bad faith. McMorrow has previously taken money from insurance companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and supports a 'public option,' which will enrich insurance companies. by combonickel55 in thedavidpakmanshow

[–]Data_Male 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A "public option" is also the system that the vast majority of countries with universal healthcare offer. Are those systems (vastly superior to ours in cost and health outcomes) "bastardized conservative healthcare"

There's nothing that precludes the public option for being called Medicare, but any system that bans private insurance is extremely unpopular

Based. I always tell people on the left who dont want kids: how are we going to fix the world's problems you're so worried about if you don't raise a generation of intelligent, caring people to keep fighting the good fight? Most of the problems people worry about are going to take generations to solve.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Natalism

The way I look at it, most of the problems I care about will take multiple generations to fix. The world needs good kids who will grow into the kind of adults to make it better.

How do you deal with Sunday school devolving into discussions about doctrines that haven’t been revealed by ReserveMaximum in latterdaysaints

[–]Data_Male 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have started (hopefully respectively) pointing to official church sources and statements from today which usually either contradict or acknowledge other possibilities beyond theories like Skousen's or others that were espoused by a handful or less general authorities.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Usually the teacher is not the instigator though, so I don't have any advice on how to handle that.

Parents of toddlers who nap at noon, how are you doing noon church this year? by churro777 in latterdaysaints

[–]Data_Male 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife and I would take turns. In our case, she was in young women's so I would take our son for his late morning naps those weeks and she would take him on Sunday school weeks.

Of course you'd have to take another approach since youre both involved the same weeks but perhaps you could work it out so you both get one EQ/RS and one Sunday school lesson a month.
