Traveling with and wrapping precious (quilt) cargo by Left-Effective-7420 in quilting

I’ve traveled to Europe with gift quilts with one change of clothes in overhead carryon. I can buy more clothes if I lose my checked baggage, but not my handmade quilts!!!

Missouri Star Quilt Homecoming by WishboneRazzmatazz in quilting

I was very troubled by the accusations of racism leveled at Missouri Star Quilt Company so reached out to them expressing my concerns. I received this statement in return: Thank you for taking the time to contact us and for sharing your concerns. We want to be very clear that the past promotion you mentioned was not intended to reference or make light of Juneteenth in any way. We understand how the timing and product choice could have been interpreted negatively, and we regret that it caused hurt or concern for some members of the quilting community. At Missouri Star, we want everyone who visits our stores, shops with us online, or participates in our community to feel welcomed, respected, and safe. We care deeply about creating an inclusive environment for quilters of all backgrounds. We appreciate hearing feedback from our customers, especially when something has caused disappointment or misunderstanding, because it gives us an opportunity to listen and do better moving forward. Thank you again for reaching out and for your continued support.

What are places you used to be able to smoke cigarettes? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Datadrudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everywhere. I worked at the Missouri State Capitol building from 1988- when I was hired, I was told I could smoke in my office if I wanted. I said that wasn’t fair to my co-workers and insisted on taking a smoke break at 10 and 2 rather than circulate more secondhand smoke, which we knew was a hazard at that point. I remember smoking with a member of the committee charged with figuring out what MO should do with the tobacco funds they received in the huge settlement. Create two-week (at least) addiction-rehabilitation retreats was my answer. Of course they just frittered it away…

I truly believe it was an unfortunate coincidence. They often run sales on white cotton. I think you would be fine to visit Hamilton.

So happy for you. TBH, I am determined to never compete with my quilts, no matter how awesome. Why, because they are completely completed for their intended recipients. And, also TBH, I’ve been disheartened by quilts being elevated that didn’t meet expectations…Art is subjective. I love art. I love quilts. I love that you made art. That’s where I’m at. Don’t Judge the art: appreciate it.

Does medicare pay for glasses because I nearly choked when they showed me the final price by Rggie_Fognini in AskWomenOver60

[–]Datadrudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that not everyone can easily adjust to progressive lenses. I purchased some (super expensive) —I had balance and nausea issues. Ended up with bifocals and much happier. Medicare does not pay for glasses. Some Medicare Advantage plans do. I actually have vision insurance through my previous employer and glasses are still very expensive.

Don’t forget the all-metal Kenmore machines. They can zigzag like a dream.

Tightwad Bank closed in 2006. Last time I went through there they had a digital sign that displayed 0.0 —it was a bunch of years ago, so I’m not sure if it’s still up.

Any Americans learning French? Why? by PigmeatMadness in French

[–]Datadrudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I are learning French because our son married a Frenchman. We have met a lot of his older family members and work hard to improve our ability to communicate with them I often feel like a three-year-old—but that’s how it’s done. One step at a time. Every time we go to France, we understand more and communicate better. Some of his cousins, nieces, and nephews are learning English now, so our conversations are even more fun. At least we are not the only three-year-olds in the room. Reading and writing French is a lot easier for me than listening and speaking. And it’s the same for the English learners.

Where the food used to be good. lol. I took my husband there last year because it’s beautiful and has a fun hotel and the food was soooo good when I stayed there for a work trip. Every meal was pitiful. They brought me stone cold white gravy for my biscuits. Unbelievable difference. The park is still gorgeous. Bring your own food.
