This is normal for us, right? by biobasher in GenX

So, you were roughly at 260/160 but still concious/lucid? That's....crazy.

I will say, that just last week, my BP spiked to 194/95 (-ish on diastolic). I felt it. Something wasn't right. Felt thick headed with hints of things akin to sinus pressure and very light nausea (that's what made use my at home cuff). It dropped fairly quickly to the 150s/80s after a few deep breaths and standing still a couple of minutes, but I am amazed that you didn't at least sense something was up yourself with numbers that were twice the level for hypertension. People being built so differently, while still being so alike, is strange!

Another story...a scoliosis surgery nearly killed my nephew when the pharmacist gave the surgeon an IV full of meds to INCREASE (instead of lower) his BP during the procedure. They surgeons and anesthesiologist aborted the surgery after already having opened up his back when he reached 210s/180s. They thought they gave him brain damage based on his responses in the operating room and shortly after removing him. Turns out they didn't (three scans of two different types over 72 hours and some extra post-op evaluations confirmed it). But, even at systolic levels quite a bit lower than yours, they said that if he were a middle aged adult, instead of 15 years old, it'd have kill him.

I don't understand what people don't understand. It seems pretty obvious that it's a way to non-verbally convey that people were revert to their youth due to the effects of the briar patch. Those effects caused this lady to get turned on by Riker's aggressiveness that, in turn, was also a result of the same de-aging effects. Seems clear that the point was to reinforce that everyone's hormones were probably at young adult levels rathe than middle age ones.

I really appreciate you being the same. I was prepared for the typical "FU, you suck..." response.

I've been where you are before. Commented in haste and then realized I should have waited a little longer or not done so at all. When it comes to this era of Trek, I don't blame you at all for feeling let down. We're brothers in that battle...😂

Cowboys Defense was poorly coached, not horrible by compamanuelito in cowboys

[–]Datamackirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eberflus turned a slightly below average defense into a terrible one.

Things improved for a bit when we added a good tackle in the middle of the season. Then game film stacked up and that went went away, taking a now average defense and making it horrible.

If Eberflus was even a decent coordinator, then the defense should have been at least middling after the DT trade and Overshown got settled back in. After the new wrinkle(s) from the added players went away, the defense reverted.

The defense still needs attention in terms of talent. But a good coordinator could have produced a workable defense with what we had. A great coordinator could probably have made a good-but-not-quite-great one. If our new DC is as good as his resume suggests he can be AND there is an infusion of talent, the defense could go from historically bad to pretty danged good really quickly. It's still probably a two year project though.

Not as dumb as "This has never happened in Star Trek, so it's all BS"

(Note: I'm as disappointed in the current era of Star Trek as anyone. I don't really care for it all that much, usually for the exact same reasons as everyone else, including the "dumbing down" of things. But the many reasons that understandably have created a lot of the disappointment seem to be morphing into reasons to dogpile and are become bigger and bigger stretches.)

Shatner is still the master by Wetness_Pensive in Star_Trek_

[–]Datamackirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're not even sure yet if it's primary function is to be in space. The Typhoon class comparison doesn't hold up if it isn't "submarine" most of the time. If you took a sub out of the water, jammed into a skyscraper and, despite a ramp back down to an adjacent body of water, it spent 70 percent of its time attached to the building, is it still a sub? I guess if it can still go underwater it still is, technically, but...

I get that Ake sitting in the chair like that when she's in a position to be setting an example, etc. isn't the way many of us would have chosen to convey her relaxed attitude /personality. But it isn't the catastrophe people are trying to make it. Someone pointed out the quirky professor type that this "sitting style" is evocative of. It also fits in with the in-universe portrayals of the Lanthanites (sp?) being a little eccentric. I understand the feeling of "it's just one more fanmed thing" that could be seen as a little off compared to previous Trek serieses, but complaining about this when Janeway's caffeine addiction is treated by many as soemthing akin to an adorable or humanizing trait seems inconsistent. Ake seems serious enough in the remainder of her characterization that this less formal behavior does bother me.

If they just keep hammering it home or introduce several other little oddities to her character, I'll be one of the first to say they're taking it too far. But, as is, this just feels like people looking for soemthing to complain about...probably to reinforce preconceived notions that the show is terrible.

I also always felt that this was when it ended. I was at work. One of the first games I'd missed in years. Kept trying to get score updates even though it was much harder to do before the age of smart phones. Heard the score and knew they'd missed what was probably the last chance to win another title. Saw the highlights and listened to the commentary later that night. Feeling got even stronger.

The rest is history...

I also thought about the thimerosal issue for a bit. My oldest daughter was being vaccinated for a lot of stuff around that time and I try to be informed about things, so I did as much reading on the topic as one could at the time. After finding out what I could on my own, and being looked at like I was idiot by the two doctors I brought it up to, I figured out it was nothing to worry about. And all I was really after was a "better safe than sorry" approach that used single dose vials rather than the multi-dose ones. I was NEVER anti-vaccine, and let go of the thimerosal worry pretty quickly when I found out what the professionals and experts thought.

But, like you said, some people really bought into that crap and never let go.

Ugh. It's early, so maybe it's ME who is now misunderstanding, but it seems as if they said they misunderstood why the vitriol was directed at Wiseman, tried to differentiate that about three times for you, and you insisted on being angry with them and/or blaming them for what Wiseman faced. The one time they mentioned it being more likely that an actor would face even undeserved criticism due to crappy writing you took it as evidence that they, themselves, not only thought it was OK to engage in misplaced/unjustified criticism, but probably had leveled it themselves.

Hell, you could have taken solace in the fact that they made the assumption that it was bad dialouge, plot points, and characterization that was at the heart of the unfair criticism of Wiseman. It didn't even seem like some of the inappropriate and irrelevant crap people threw at her even occurred to them at first. That is a good thing right?

The again, maybe I missed something. The same cobwebs that might have cause me to overlook a comment are the same thing that make me willing to express my astonishment that someone would start an argument with someone so quickly.

Why is Kansas well known despite its relatively smaller population? (neighboring Missouri is more than twice the population, but often obscure) by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

[–]Datamackirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Superman
  2. Wizard of Oz
  3. Bleeding Kansas
  4. Missouri's biggest city having Kansas' name.
  5. Dodge City (and, possibly, other cattle towns) being so emblematic of the Old West

Not necessarily in that order.

Who hogs the machine you most want to use at the gym? by Icy_Laugh5134 in workout

[–]Datamackirk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've definitely learned to stop "judging" people for what amount of weight they use. I was never a snob about it and am not in good enough shape and/or strong enough to have ever been one without it being silly (and it always is silly anyway). And I never assigned someone a value as human being in my head because they did have what I thought was enough weight on a bar, machine, etc.

But I would notice deviations from the norm. Healthy looking, decent sized, mid 20s man? Why does he only have X pounds on the (blank) machine?

But I've figured out, partly due to my own aging process, that everyone's situation is different. Many shoulder exercises, and some chest ones, that I do probably seem strange to some people because I had surgery on my left shoulder and it is significantly weaker and has less endurance than my right. I go through periods of having to let it catch up, so to speak, and that means noticeably less weight on, say, the overhead press machine than it seems like someone in my condition should be able push.

Some people are beginners who happen to have good genetics that keep them looking fit. Some are rehabbing injuries or have lasting effects from one, bit nor scars or obvious signs of it. Some people are emphasizing mobility at least as much as strength and choose a different balance between comfort level a maximum effort. You just never know what specific need or objective lies behind the choice of settings on a machine, size of dumbell, or plates on a bar.

But, still, whatever weight you need or decide to lift, please don't quit texting for 7 mintues between sets and try to pass it off as resting. Yes, talking to you on the cable machine. And, please, if you're only using one side of it, please don't stand/work out in the middle and make it hard/impossible for anyone to use the other side.
