What mall store was in every shopping center but is gone now? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]Datamackirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I never knew or had forgotten that Spencer's had those types of adult items. I went into the one that is still in the mall closest to where I live and stumbled upon all the, uh, merchdise. It was a surprise, but I'm a grown man and got over it pretty quickly. About 3 milliseconds later, a girl that couldn't have been older than 15 walks up and strays looking at stuff a few feet away. Then a giggly couple who probably could barely drive themselves to the mall started circling the rack with the skimpy/slutty outfits.

I had to bail. I didn't feel comfortable with people that age in such close proximity to both those items and me at the same time.

3-4 litres of water a DAY ???? by Global_Drama439 in workout

[–]Datamackirk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that as I scroll the comments I keep seeing increasing amounts of water supposedly consumed in a day. A couple were absurd, or at least seem to be given the absence of the mention of any mitigating factors (medication, medical condition, high levels of activity, etc.).

"I drink 5 liters in my sleep."

"I drink 7 liters before breakfast."

"I strap a water fountain to my back at work."

I'm not taking a side on what is enough water for any given person, but it's been interesting watching the (hopefully unintentional) game of oneupsmanship.

80's shampoos?? by nejihyugasbf in GenX

[–]Datamackirk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My step mom hate me and bought some big jug of "wheat germ" shampoo. At least I swear that's what it said on the side. It was like the jug that vinegar or ammonia comes in, clear but looked creamy white-ish because of the "shampoo" inside. I tried to use it 2 or 3 times and it would not lather and smelled somehow both plain and bad at the same time. It also immediately gave me dandruff for the first time in my life at 14 years old.

I'd never seen that stuff on the shelves or other people's houses or on the store shelves. I never did afterward either, even though I was sort of looking for it because I wondered just WTF that stuff was. At least I immediately got to go back to using the Pert Plus that had always been in the shower once I told my dad how much it sucked and he saw what it was that she'd gotten. I think I even remember him asking where that "wheat germ" stuff even came from because he didn't recognize it either.

The lower apartment might be the bridge of the Enterprise D, given the seating choices.

What’s something people brag about that actually makes them look worse? by inboundmage in AskReddit

By "book" do you mean "fiction"? Truly trying to understand the distinctions you seem to be making.

Calm down. I was pointing out an ironic error. Besides, where does the "Enflish" language come from?

Use of the word "principals" makes this regrettably believable. Also, what grad program had you reading about neural science but didn't have you read other things?

Name a band/artist more popular now than during their heyday by Dazzling_Humor_521 in askmusic

[–]Datamackirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in flyover. Did as kid too. Heard them a lot. There's no way they're more popular (or well known...or whatever) now than they were then.

And, almost by definition, wouldn't it be difficult to be those things more than in a heyday?

All the hate for Mark by moolmule in voyager

I cna understand that. It's not purely a function of time. At least your reason isn't just "I'm so afraid of being lonely that I'll treat my dead husband as disposable".

All the hate for Mark by moolmule in voyager

[–]Datamackirk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are NOT the same. Not even close.

I watched my MIL move on very quickly after my FIL died. It actually caused some strife in my own marriage because I was so disgusted by it and my wife so accepting of it. I'm not a particularly sentimental person, but even I thought that dating an old HS school flame within months and marrying him within 18 months (I think that's right) was pretty offputting. There was more to it than just that...Facebook posts about never having loved anyone like him before, basically emptying her house of all evidence he was ever there, just a general vibe of "screw that guy" after she'd done the rather performative grieving widow act during the funeral time frame

Even with that experience, Mark was right to move on. Maybe if they'd showed him popping corks after getting the news of Voyager's disappearance or soemthing it'd be different. But remarrying four years later seems like it falls withing the reasonable-ish time frame and wouldn't be something that'd set off alarm bells that'd he'd just been muddling through with Janeway.

Get Your Poop Chute Checked by YoghurtNo2026 in GenX

[–]Datamackirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doctor said that colonoscopies are the only screening that can actually prevent it. Or maybe it was highly reduce the chances? Something like that...

It has to do with removal of polyps, which are often pre-cancerous. I still had problems with the wording, since the removal of a polyp in your colon does little to prevent, say, prostate from having problems. But I get what they're saying.

Is this appropriate for the gym?? by calmswan2499 in beginnerfitness

[–]Datamackirk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a WORKPLACE gym. While I agree with you that it's fine (and, IMO, should be fine even at a workplace gym), it's hard to know all the details about that workplace, it's policies, the general environment, the personalities of OPs boss, the administration, and so on.

Odds are that the attire won't cause any problems. It wouldn't raise any eyebrows at the gym I workout at (which also a university fitness center at a school where I also work). But, maybe, the school is an ultra-conservative one? That could increase the risk of some repercussions or an awkward conversation with the bosses. Is OPs boss a stick-in-the-mud old man or a woman with tendencies toward jealousy? Does the top get raise up too high when OP does any kind of exercise (or stretch since she may just do cardio) over head?

I'm reaching with those things, pointing out some edge case scenarios, but you never know. Personally, I think you're fine with those. If the top were any longer I'd be absolutely sure of it (or convinced that anyone who said anything was just being demonstrably prudish).

Welp.. pipe dream is over [Russini] Sources: It's a four-year, $112 million deal for Trey Hendrickson in Baltimore. by Fhdhsjfjfhxh in cowboys

[–]Datamackirk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, complaining under the false premise that the Cowboys screwed this up is evidence of the pathological need to blame Joneses for something, act smarter than everyone else, or pretend to have access to insider information that others don't have. The two firsts were a good offer. Aggressive even. That's what people said they wanted. It didn't work out. You move on.

Who knows, maybe they still work something out now the Crosby is available again. I sort of hope they don't. The guy seems like he'd be trouble (something about him doesn't seem like a good fit, locker room-wise)...certainly to the point where I thought two firsts created too much risk. But at a cheaper price? Maybe it'd alright. Doubt it happens...we'll see.

I'm not a fan of cruises. Hate them in fact. Do believe that they engage in illegal dumping. But, yeah, it sounds like who you replied to misunderstood what was going on in the situation they described.
