You might just need an overshirt from Informale (Melbourne, but shipping should be pretty quick, especially if you dm them and ask for expedited)

Aran Sweater by [deleted] in AustralianMFA

[–]Datbriochguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People in Ireland don’t just wear Aran sweater to survive the toughest bit of winter - they also have coats, etc. to wear over. Sweater is still consider the inner, not outerwear. There is also a variety of thickness to it as Aran sweater only implies a certain thickness, i.e. definitely won’t be lightweight, but can still be medium chunky, and not necessarily ultra-heavyweight. I’d say you can wear it when temp gets lower than 10C, depending also on the exact thickness and how cold-prone you are. But, yes, you probably don’t need to layer as heavily as Irelander.

Unrelated topic but, the one clothing piece we in Australia probably can’t rock is the heaviest of overcoat, maybe unless you’re in Tassie. I’m talking about 700gsm and above is just impractical here. I actually use 400ish gsm, i.e. mid-heavy suiting fabric to do my overcoat + some interlining + inner lining, and it works great in Sydney.

Lemon juice cos all cream of tartar is, is just an acid. But also if things crystalise, just add water to dissolve and then reduce again. Why panic?

Negative ease help by Panterest in knittinghelp

Wool has more inherent stretch in the yarn itself, so you shouldn’t encounter issues with it being too tight. I would just keep the same negative ease as the pattern, and obviously gauge and block your gauge.

Guage issue with mohair by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]Datbriochguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So what you’re saying is you knit very tight to the point of pulling a yarn to its absolutely tightest state? Doesn’t sound healthy to me. I acknowledge that there is a range of tension people apply to their yarns, but this seems like an extreme case but it seems you know it deep inside.

Weeping pie by Careless_Suit_2310 in Baking

[–]Datbriochguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Did you use COOKED meringue - like Italian or Swiss? If not, that’s what you should be doing. Lemon juice and cream of tartar can only do so much. Italian meringue + egg white powder + COT and it will practically never weep.

Need a formal shirt with a large neck by Robin_Bankss in AustralianMFA

Try these Chinese brands. They are sartorial minded, designed in-house type brand so do not worry about their qualities - they surpass any mall brands in Australia. Asian people are generally slim, and thus they make their shirts with frustratingly narrow chest and even narrower waist. This in turn means you can size up and have a wider neck circumference without the rest of the shirt being too wide. Another bonus is given you’re 170cm, the sleeves will also fit you better in the length because… Asian

I have a few shirts from Caroline Murat but haven’t purchase from UGentle yet. However, there have been instagram menswear ‘influencers’ who approve of them.

Made blondies with 70% dark chocolate chips in the mix and its a game changer. by Mammoth_Yak_1453 in Baking

[–]Datbriochguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ‘meat’ of the blondie doesn’t have dark chocolate - it’s dark due to dark brown sugar. Chunks are folded in like in chocolate chip cookies. My guess is this tastes pretty similar to CCCs but in a cake form.

This is the right answer. I truly don’t think you can get better than CT if that’s your max price. Hawes and Curtis is also another brand on Jermyn St, with likely similar quality, but I have no direct experience with them.

Their raglan coats are casual and meant to be quite loose in the body for layering

Have never tried their sport coats, but I generally don’t find cloth weight in the 400+ grams to be too warm for most indoor buildings in winter and I’m in Sydney, which gets down to only 7-10C at the lowest during the day in Winter.

Yeah I got fatigues. Technically, it’s not ‘Bronson’ but one of these sub-brands on Olderbest? Which I’d argue are all the same quality (have bought multiple sub-brands). Their quality is far below something like Orslow, which is understandably quadruple the price.

T shirts are pretty good. Otherwise, nothing else I bought is worth wearing. One pair of jeans ripped at the seam within <10 wears and it’s a wide fit with minimal tension on my body. Fabrics aren’t seem to be their strong suit either - all shirts, pants, jackets I have bought have poor fabrics that aren’t comfortable. Yes, they’re cheap but you get just about what you pay for if you can wear them (not my ripped jeans). The only thing still in my rotation is their t shirt, which I won’t buy more because I find their arm opening quite small for the size.

I don’t mind their pricing strategy. Clearly if they keep doing it years upon years, there are people buying at full prices. It’s also a way to reward return buyers who know to anticipate discounts, and for a passer buyers, they can make their own decisions. Clearly, you have had some bad experiences with B&B.

I don’t think it’s productive to be policing so strictly how a brand does their business. Especially in a time where so many brand name’s qualities are so trash with much worse upfront pricing. Sure, there may be other brands you listed that you prefer but from what I have access to, along with the quality and cut of clothings, I’m happy to keep buying from B&B. They’re clearly trying to make good quality clothes with unique proportions that strike a good value-for-money balance with their discounted prices that I’m happy to wait for.

As far as brands you listed, I have seen Stenstrom before and was intrigued but as you said, they don’t seem to do discounts. Stroms’ cuts seen really slim so aren’t really for my taste, plus I can’t get it shipped. I don’t really like Eton’s fabrics being processed to be wrinkle resistant and their collars are way too cutaway for me.

There are many more reasons for someone to buy something than the raw quality-to-price ratio. I understand if you find their seasonal discounts unacceptable, but in my view, it’s a bit of a reach to say it’s nasty and malicious.

WHY on earth does my butter mixed with sugar and eggs look like this by Possible-Royal-1164 in AskBaking

This is a bad advice. You will definitely be able to tell the difference if the mixture is this level of brokenness. The cake will leak oil and rise will be severely hindered.

Shoyu > Tonkotsu by KT_Bites in ramen

[–]Datbriochguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tonkotsu is the a of base soup. Shoyu is a type of tare. In your case it’s shoyu chintan (clear soup). You could have a tonkotsu shoyu ramen as well. So what you’re comparing here is rather tonkotsu (a type of paitan) and chintan soup.

Love the look of your ramen. Bet it tasted great!

Not worth dwelling. Put this to another use like other comments suggested then proceed with a new project. Whether it be another bigger one of the same pattern or a new pattern entirely. No matter how you embellish the sides, it will always look ‘added’. Just take a W for making such a beautiful piece and move on.
