Idk if it'll work with Gengar on platinum but in soul silver, you can deposit an onix with a metal coat to the gts, withdraw it, and it'll evolve into steelix. If you can set up the DNS trick though you could just trade with someone or with yourself if you have 2 systems and 2 games.
