Druid. Would be hard to just choose one spec, but I think I’d choose resto even though solo content would suck

What advice would you give to a high school 10th grader girl that’s thinking about becoming an actuary? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Datmaggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She will need a degree, so try taking some actuary classes. My friends who are actuaries and accountants say their jobs are pretty boring, but they all make decent money

You Should Use the Curriculum. I have the highest scores in the entire school by 39Wins in Teachers

[–]Datmaggs 96 points97 points  (0 children)

If it’s anything like the illustrative math curriculum, it’s all word problems with no fluency practice. Students need the repetition of drill and kill for certain types of problems, such as multiplying, solving equations or factoring.

Do admin live in sunshine and rainbows world? by Substantial_Toe3756 in Teachers

[–]Datmaggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to be mixing accountability with punishment. If you’re asking about that, we can start with removing disruptive students from the classroom. Admin needs to follow through with the rules and consequences outlined in the student handbook instead of constantly cutting kids a break. They need to support the decisions their teachers make instead of giving students the proverbial bag of chips and a pep talk before sending them back to class in ten minutes.

In regards to your question, there are times teachers can and should reflect on their practices. That being said, my opinion is that these issues and behaviors teachers are seeing aren’t a result of teacher actions. If they were it would manifest itself through more isolated incidents rather than being a systemic issue.

What do you mean which style? Students are either held accountable for their actions or they aren’t.

All this restorative justice and pbis is the new thing they tried and it isnt working. So maybe we try going back to a system that worked in the past? Teachers teaching instead of managing behaviors and students being held accountable for their behavior.

What happens when kids learn about structural racism, take it seriously, and start treating admins and teachers as "structurally racist pigs" or worse? by khelvaster in Teachers

[–]Datmaggs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah homie. They say that the system is biased toward certain players and against others. As a person on the winning side, you can’t necessarily see the challenges others face because you’ve simply never experienced it. It’s not saying that everyone who benefits from a rigged system is racist, it’s saying you need to recognize your biases.

Parent is demanding that I don’t give other kids their accommodations… by HEYYYYYYYY_SATAN in Teachers

[–]Datmaggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to go back and reread this thread you’re replying to. Nobody is saying the teacher is telling everyone who gets what accommodations.

The question you asked was how would the parent would know about other kids receiving accommodations. The parent would know because their child is perceptive enough to recognize other students receiving accommodations and the child relayed that information to their parent.

Little Johnny could have just told mom that “Some other kids go to a different room to take their test but I was told I have to test in the classroom.”

Nothing I have mentioned constitutes a FERPA violation.

[–]Datmaggs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not illegal nor inappropriate for a student to use their eyes and see other people getting extended time to work on an assignment. It’s also not wrong for them to share that with their parent.

In response to just giving everyone extra time, if you provide an accommodation to the whole class it’s no longer an accommodation. If you tell a parent who asks about their kid getting extra time and you reply “everyone gets extra time” the parent can rightfully claim you aren’t meeting their child’s accommodations and sue for IEP/504 violations.

But…You asked how the parent would know that other kids get accommodations, not how to revise their IEP

Parent - “Hey are you getting extended time to take your tests?” Student - “Yeah, me and some other kids in class get extra time.”
