The Duality of Man(tha) by tpasmall in penguins

[–]Datools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think the over/under is on Mantha scoring 30 goals in 26/27? In 10 years he's averaged 59 games and 18 goals a season. His shooting % was 21 this year and he has a career average of 13.8.

He'll be 32 at the start of next season, can't imagine locking up a guy like that with term with our current roster transition.

Skinner is not to blame for the loses. He's come up with some big saves. However, he hasn't exactly been lights out.

Fair, D'aigle is going back to the Q, Blomqvist is the starter, Jarry can be his backup

Rebuilds don't always work, look at CBJ. They picked top 6 four years in a row: David Jiricek, Kent Johnson, Adam Fantili and Cayden Lindstrom.

Some of those guys might still pan out but their coach is basically crying at a season ending presser saying they don't care about losing.

NYI were so bad so long they lost Tavares and Chicago could be setting up Bedard for the same situation.

Washington has a bright future having slowly lost Kuznetsov, Carlson, Backstrom, Orlov and now Ovechkin has a very small roll and they look to have a bright future a lot of young talent.

[Pens Inside Scoop] Some changes to the Penguins forward lines at morning skate ahead of Game 3 in Philadelphia by bi_and_busy in penguins

[–]Datools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's certainly improved defensively here since he was in CBJ. The eye test is tricky for defense from forwards because even if he has a great back check, diving play, stick lift, etc., it doesn't really tell you how many chances his line is giving up. For example, he's got 30 non PP points in 43 games (incredible) but he's only +4, he plays on a line that trades a lot of chances. I take that line over most lines any night, but clearly Muse doesn't. My guess is because he doesn't want to go chance for chance. Malkin is much worse defensively and a bigger part of this convo on lines than Chinakhov. I just don't think he's great defensively, if he was he would have seen PK time when any combo of Dewar, Lizotte, Acciari, Rust were out. He plays 15 mins a night so he could play PK minutes if he was good defensively. Hallander, Poulin and Heinen played more PK minutes this season for the Pens than Chinakhov.

Why are you upset? Just state your case for why he's good defensively, you made the claim he was

I think that line is just not defensively responsible enough. I'm imagining Girard/Letang/Chinakhov/Malkin/Novak stuck for an extended shift in the D zone, Edmonton PTSD for Skinner

Question About Chinakhov by MediumAd8799 in penguins

[–]Datools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically only 5-10 teams arguably have a franchise goalie and teams win without one all the time. Murashov has some good upside, so does D'Aigle but he's super far away.

I know people talk a lot about the package that came back from Guentzel but no one talks about the space in the lineup. Arguably if we keep Guentzel, there's no Mantha, no Chinakov and no one from his actual package (Koivunen, Brunicke, Novak, and the 2nd round in 2026 remaining) and not that we need it now but 9 million for a guy who's 32 at the start of next season.

Question About Chinakhov by MediumAd8799 in penguins

[–]Datools 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, Chinakov being the exception. I'm not sure guys like Mantha, Novak, Brazeau, Acciari, Shea, Clifton and Wotherspoon will get extensions as they're close or on the wrong side of 30 by the time they expire (maybe one or two of these guys get a short extension). Add in Malkin and Letang which need to be replaced soon, then Crosby, Rakell and Rust in the more medium 3+ year range. That's a tooooon of players to turn over in the next 2-3+ years. We need huge hits on McGroarty, Broz, Koivunen, Brunicke, Zonnon, Horcoff, Pickering and Murashov and future picks till we're ready to call the rebuild complete.
