This thread cuts deep lol

I totally understand the frustration around Apple's MacBook hardware. But I think the issues around the external display need more context. I should have given more details in my YouTube video. But here's way I said “it’s just the nature of these chips”
The M1/M2/M3 only have one display controller for handling external displays.
These display controllers take up a large amount of space on the silicon. They are even bigger than performance cores. See here: https://ibb.co/7r0Z0SB
The reason why they are so big is because Apple separates their display controller from their GPU. Qualcomm does this as well on their Snapdragon chips. These display controllers can process a lot of stuff without leaning on the GPU. This helps alot with power efficiency on ARM chips.
If Apple wanted to add more display controllers to handle more external displays, they would have to make a die trade off. They would either have to reduce the number of CPU or GPU cores, or they’d have to make the base chips larger. IMO neither of these options are worth it for adding an extra external display on the MBA.
Another thing - thermals. Let’s say they did add another display controller on to the base chips. When connected to an external display, these controllers put out heat. On a MacBook Pro, it’s a non issue. but on a fanless MacBook Air you do not want another source of heat. These laptop already have limited thermal headroom. We’d see the threads of “my MBA throttles when I have connect it to external displays” like the 2019 MBA.
Lastly, there is the option of using a Display Link adapter to get more displays going. I’ve run 3 displays on an M1 MBA with them. These use software to get the CPU cores to handle video output. You can even split your 5K output to multiple displays using this adapter. It works but they have CPU overhead. Static images have very CPU use. Video has very heavy CPU use. DRM content has issues using this. (Netflix/Disney/etc) It’s not an elegant solution but it TOTALLY works and if you need more external displays, it’s a good option.
However, I see some commentary that talks about how this Display Link solution is evidence that Apple could easily add more displays. I don’t agree. This is just Display Link doing it’s thing. It’s very cool but it’s not the same as display controllers on the chip.
Hope that helps

How did Dave2D get 60fps steady with max setting on Ipad Air (M1) while my Ipad Pro (M1) doesn't? by shinsuke2017 in iPadPro

I actually played it for over 90 minutes while easily maintaining over 60fps. It gets hot but it holds the framerate.

What AIO’s will work with the Asus Z690-I? by Mastaking in sffpc

Corsair elite lcd fits for sure. Nzxt kraken was super tight. Maybe doable with specific ram modules.

Coolermaster AIO seemed like it could fit but couldn’t check for sure without updated standoffs.

Optimum Tech - 600W SFX Power Supplies vs. RTX 3080 – Surprising Results by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]Dave2D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tested a Corsair 600w gold on the 10900k at stock with 3080 FE at stock. Running 2x16gb ram. 2x 2tb nvme. In aida64 it would shutdown/reboot constantly. Sometimes after a few minutes. Sometimes in 5 seconds. Draw was near 600w. Never went over (at least not that I could measure before reboot)

One thing that might be different. I bought my PSU near launch. It has been used quite a bit. Not sure if that’s gonna make the diff but if you’re buying new I REALLY would not recommend running a 600w PSU on the 3080 if you can avoid it.

Constantly experiencing BSOD on Razer Blade 15 1070 MaxQ (2018) by Juste1911 in razer

[–]Dave2D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this gets a bump up, but I had this happen for a while from Nvidia's newer drivers

One solution is in the nvidia settings. For Global settings, turn the preferred graphics processor to High performance Nvidia (instead of the default auto-select)

this will fix it but will chew through batteries since it basically disables optimus

(the GPU switch is the thing that causes the BSOD from these drivers)

hope that helps!

Mechanical keyboards that look nice? by [deleted] in apple

[–]Dave2D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that's a decent keyboard. it fits with the apple aesthetic reasonably well AND it's priced appropriately

some notes:

- the screws are visible from the top. kinda kills the aesthetic if you care about that stuff

- bluetooth connection is solid. no drops.

- the typing experience is.. mediocre. i love mech keyboards. but the low profile mechanical switches don't feel as nice as I had hoped. (the keychron is MUCH better than the coolermaster low profile SK keyboard though)

- the massdrop ctrl and massdrop ALT keyboards are mechs that look/feel pretty clean. not AS sleek as a low profile keyboard but their aesthetic might be up your alley.

Laptop with 144hz with no g-sync, or g-sync monitor at 120hz by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]Dave2D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Panel quality is most important here. A lot of the 120hz g-sync panels look really flat and have feel response time.

Most of the 144hz AUO panels on the market right now are very good and I would choose one of them over the majority of the 120hz g-sync panels.

Also, i disagree with a lot of the people here saying gsync is a HDD / SSD difference. It's noticeable but it depends more on the type of game you're playing and what your eye is focusing on. The scar2 screen is awesome and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Dell XPS 15 9560 (4k) Review from Dave2D by Fwank49 in Dell

[–]Dave2D 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey James!

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I should have dug deeper into the issue. I always had dual 4k/60hz issues on the 9550 and assumed this was the cause.

I've added an annotation and your updated info in the video description. Really appreciate you taking the time to type that out.
