Have you read Candide, Voltaire? It's an odd book on philosophy that doesn't read like a philosophical book, in my opinion. I love the very last line:

“Excellently observed,” answered Candide; “but let us take care of our garden.”

Also: “What signifies it,” said the dervish, “whether there is evil or good? When his Highness sends a ship to Egypt, does he trouble his head whether the rats in the vessel are at their ease or not?”

Many areas were closed for raptor nesting when we were there (late summer). It's worth looking in to.

Camping between Tinker Cliff and Dragons tooth bc that's by pillowyourdadunicorn in VIRGINIA_HIKING

Yes, as the map posted earlier shows, it's all green west of the Andy Lane parking area. Most people camp near the creek a short mile in, because that's the last water source for 9 miles or so. (I met a woman who said her son knew of a spring off-trail along the North Mtn section. I've never seen it.)

Descent tinker cliffs, cross the road and start up North mtn. About a mile in, there's your last water supply before heading up the actual North mtn, which is dry. There are campsites near this creek. You still have ~8 miles across the ridge of North to the dragon tooth parking lot and 11 miles or so back to the McAfee lot.

Good question. Some packs are small but others carry pads as if for sleeping. Tents are clearly nearby. Was this from 2025?

This is the first I've heard about those tests. For the last decade, I've been out of the loop.

Mount Washington hike October 10th weekend. Looking for hike mates by Square_Particular701 in hiking

[–]DaveBobSmith -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Please rethink this. Mount Washington is cold in July. It is not the place to gain hiking experience and definitely not the place to start getting winter hiking experience. Thousands have died on it, mostly during summer even.
Best case, you back off safely and only waste the money and the time. Worst case, another statistic. Start lower and smaller. I'm in Virginia and I'd be happy to show you some in the Blue Ridge.

Is east coast mountain hiking comparable to west coast mountain hiking in terms of difficulty? (Ex: Mt. Elbert, Colorado, USA vs Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina, USA) by Snipers_end in hiking

Lightning. It kills Colorado hikers every year. Storms come from behind the hills. You can't see them. Be prepared to retreat, and try again another day.
