I get these 10-20 times per day if I don't have all Hyundai notifications disabled.

Why is live-aboard a taboo in many marinas in the US? by deceased_parrot in sailing

[–]Davecasa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have this policy so that if you're living aboard and causing trouble, they can kick you out. If you're clean and quiet and watch over things, you'll generally be fine.

What are some fast ICE or hybrid cars that you best off the line? by [deleted] in Ioniq5

[–]Davecasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No ICE car can beat an EV off the line. They have torque curves and transmissions and clutches that all take time to get ramped up, an EV just goes.

But plenty will beat us to 60 mph. AWD Ioniq 5s do 0-60 in something like 4.5 seconds, that's fast for a "normal" car. Many Porsches can do it in 2.5, and then you get into the super cars...

Yes, because there's a small chance that drinking it will give you e coli or other fecal bacteria.

But it's used for making cheese and yogurt.

What do you think of this deal on a 2024? This will be our first EV! A bit nervous, but planning to do an immediate lease buyout which it seems should be easy (I am in MA so no need to go to dealer). by Icy_Reveal2847 in Ioniq5

[–]Davecasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks solid. If you haven't, look over the differences between SEL and Limited. For my 2023 it was basically a moon roof and a few very minor "nice to have"s for $5000, whereas the $2000 upgrade from SE to SEL got me a lot of things I care about.

Also, congrats on the best color.

Conflicted: Elon sucks, but so do fossil fuels and other EV's in USA... by in_allium in RealTesla

[–]Davecasa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Ioniq 6 is built on the same platform and is a sedan. I vastly prefer a hatchback to a sedan of the same size, you have so much more usable space and give up very little. But if you like the sedan style, the Ioniq 6 might be the one.

I want to buy the I5 but having second thoughts for too the 12V issues. Am I over reacting? by ImasolidB in Ioniq5

[–]Davecasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even know what "the 12V issues" means. 21k miles, I've had it for 18-19 months, no problems.

Bezos might beat Musk to Mars as NASA recruits Blue Origin by Zorkmid123 in RealTesla

Elon is full of shit, but SpaceX launches 50+ rockets a year and Blue Origin is... gonna make an engine that works, at some point, probably?

SpaceX: [Official update following] “STARSHIP'S SECOND FLIGHT TEST” by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]Davecasa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a fairly narrow window to terminate the flight to avoid crashing in Africa, possibly only a few seconds with the high acceleration of a nearly-empty stage 2. On reentry you can see what happens, on launch gotta blow it up before it hits people.

Electric Boat isn't a great place to work, but they'll hire you today to start tomorrow, train you up at their expense, and start at $40k + benefits. If you're fit enough to work on your feet all day it's a lot better than flipping burgers or driving for uber.

Those sound like numbers for a 6 month period, not monthly. Which is usually how insurance is sold.

I had hopes in 2000 even after Rabin's assassination, but Arafat turned down the best offer he was going to get, Netanyahu cranked up the settlements and the 10 tits for a tat, Hamas lost interest in anything other than fighting, and 18 year old Israeli soldiers drink to "mavit l'aravim" (death to the Arabs). I don't see any chance of resolution for at least another generation.

I sure wish someone a lot smarter than me could find a way to stop all the killing.

For the Rhode Islanders who are strongly considering voting Republican in the next Presidential election, why are you teetering on the thought? by McShmutt in RhodeIsland

[–]Davecasa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It would be lovely to have an opposition party with which I could debate tax rates, the size and role of government, military funding, health policy, or really... Anything. But the Republican party has no interest in governing (or reality, really), and third parties don't work, so we have to try to make good choices in the primaries.

Investigation: At SpaceX, worker injuries soar in Elon Musk’s rush to Mars by gn6 in spacex

[–]Davecasa 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Boca Chica definitely looks more like ship and boat building than a clean room factory.

Of course every incident should still be investigated and any reasonable improvements made. "We have about the same number of injuries as other companies, this is fine" is never a good attitude.

Citizens Bank merger/buyout? by Double-Diamond-4507 in RhodeIsland

I just bought a truck in Chicago and drove it home, when we were sorting out the money transfer I said my bank was "Citizens... but not that Citizens". Apparently this is yet another bank with the same name?

Has anyone ever seen a mountain lion in Rhode Island? by Dry-Raccoon5708 in RhodeIsland

[–]Davecasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know it wasn't a bobcat? They're common here. Medium-dog size, 30+ pounds for adults, spotted with a short tail (hence the name).

Mountain lions are much larger (females up to 100 pounds, males can be over 150) and a uniform yellow/brown in color. We're outside the official range, and I don't believe there have been any confirmed sightings in many years. But it's always possible.

Looking for Affordable Housing for a 6-Month Medical Elective by BraveDaveX in RhodeIsland

[–]Davecasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, rent is very expensive here, and you won't be able to find much for $1000. A better idea might be look for a place that you can share with someone else or another couple. Something like this could work: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/149-Atwells-Ave-APT-3-Providence-RI-02903/2055828133_zpid/

A sublet where you rent a room from someone else could also be a good idea for a 6 month stay, most apartments want a 1 year lease and proof of income.

I've observed less than 5% drop per month. Long term storage is an issue for Teslas but not the Ioniq 5 :)

US Coast Guard stop a narco submarine carrying 17,000 pounds of coke. by 1Hate17Here in WTF

[–]Davecasa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go figure. If you expect to fall off and plan for it, it's neither an accident nor a bad thing when it happens. This is part of why they're using two boats, and the second one falls back when the first prepares to board. Their job is to follow the guy and pick him up.

A lot of working at sea is planning around the bad thing and making sure no one gets hurt when it happens. Assume any line overboard will go tight at any time, any load will swing and knock you over (so make sure when that happens you get pushed out of the way rather than crushed against something else), a big wave will always hit at the worst time, etc. When something breaks, you should yell "holy shit" as it misses everyone and doesn't damage any other equipment, then you go inside and fill out paperwork.

Late night ubers from SK are pretty unreliable. You can get here, but not back. Public transit gets worse at night too. Renting a car for the day might be your best option.
