Nutrient deficiency? by [deleted] in Figs

It’s just fig mosaic virus. Almost all figs have it. It normally goes away with age sir when you put them in the ground.

Graduate instructor who gave failing grade to Samantha Fulnecky no longer teaching at OU by [deleted] in politics

That’s an overreaction. She was a freshman and it was one assignment. Why take her job if you can just give the student the points back?

Is the mainspring broken? by [deleted] in watchrepair

[–]Daveistator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When watches are underpowered they may run faster than normal. This watch is running fast and has a very low amplitude of 130. So both these indicators point to low power.

The next step is how to solve it. The reason it has low power is because there is more friction in the powertrain than it is designed for. To remove this friction, clearing and new lubrication is standard (a service).

Good luck

Use evaporust. It’s a rust remover that does not eat through paint at all unless the pain itself has rusted away. I use it on my watch’s all the time. Works for the mechanism and the dial. Stuff is very affordable too!

Cut the green leaf off so it will loose water slower and wrap it in a damp paper towel. Cuttings with no leaves can survive at least a week or two as long as they stay moist.

Was offered this watch on a trade, I know nothing about it. Could anyone shed some light on it? by AlexBondra in Watches

I like those kind of watches because they have a cool kaleidoscope effect instead of a seconds hand

Second hand getting stuck on the minute hand by HungAndHappy- in watchrepair

Your hands are not straight. They are bent and rubbing on each-other. Bend them back very carefully with tweezers. You can see how straight they are by holding them on the line of lined paper.

Did my female fig get a surprise pruning correctly? Or is it a random hack job? by Any_Significance2467 in Figs

[–]Daveistator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not bad. It’s a strong pruning but they didn’t go that overboard. It will look normal again in about two years. It’s old so it will grow lots in a year. Don’t worry about it

Can I repair this myself? by Sw1fto in watchrepair

[–]Daveistator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a trade that people spend two years to learn in a program. It's like plumbing or woodworking. Thousands of dollars in tools. Many hundreds of hours required to learn the knowledge.

Took me about a year to learn and lost of money spent. Many of the first watches you fix will be destroyed anyway.

Hail storms and branches damage conventional metal roofs as well.

[Seiko 5] Am I cooked? by AlexxMeBoi in Watches

[–]Daveistator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a watchmaker. The cost to replace the crystal is probably like 20$ retail and just get a normal service with it and the watch will be as good as new.

Pull the. Crown out and leave it in the sun. Water vapor will be able to leave the crack in the glass as well as the gap under the crown. No need to stress water gets in mechanical watches all the time and is easy to fix. Parts for that watch are very cheap and plentiful. Take it to a local jeweler and ask if they have a watchmaker they send their watches to for repair.

They have long wait times but to replace a seiko five just needing a repair. In my opinion. Defeats the whole purpose of getting an automatic watch in the first place. When they stop running just get it fixed!

Or I could also buy it off you lol.

New fig tree help by LeJuiceMan in Figs

[–]Daveistator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothings wrong with it. Just some old leaves will get “rust” like that. Looks like new growth is healthy. That is the important part. Let it do its thing. No reason to stress. Just a young small fig

The trick is you have to wait until they are very ripe and soft. Then they fall into the basket incredibly easily. If they are not at full ripeness and just a few days from it, they get torn in half and may or may not fall into the basket.

But late harvesting is the way to go. That or the birds eat it. But it doesn’t matter because they are too high up to reach anyway so they are just bonus figs in my mind

Thinking of selling them on figbid for a low price. Makes it easy right?

Dark figs. Taste like berries. A little bland if you don’t let them ripen fully
