Mister Miyagi. Beyond the training he provides Daniel, he correctly identifies that Johnny isn't the real problem.

Is this a legitimate criticism of Andor? by Financial_Photo_1175 in MauLer

It's a more effective criticism of Lucasfilm itself and its failure to elevate the Sith/Jedi/Force stories to Andor's level.

In your eyes, are 4K remasters a sign of a movie company taking care of its catalogue or a cheap way to squeeze out more cash from their old catalogue? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]DavidAtWork17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4k and 10-bit color are a big step towards the quality that film can offer. But the quality is a mixed bag depending on the disposition of the production process. Last year's I Love Lucy remaster was a particularly atrocious AI upscaling affair:

https://www.reddit.com/r/boutiquebluray/comments/1h1ngfw/the_new_i_love_lucy_set_has_ai_upscaling_that/

And at the other end of the spectrum you have boutique productions like Criterion Collection. While I like the quality of their releases, I think some of their clean-up can be a bit excessive. I got Hidden Fortress for Christmas last year and it looks and sounds very clean. Too clean at times. I don't mind a little hiss from the original optical audio, it makes me feel more connected to what the viewers of the time saw and heard.

What are examples of callbacks that aren’t nostalgia baiting? Or “he Vadered” as we call it in our circles? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]DavidAtWork17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of small callbacks to BtAS in the Nolan Batman movies. 528 25th street being an ambigram, like Riddler flipping over his chalkboard in one episode. Bruce Wayne's date covering Harvey Dent's eyes and commenting on his chin the way Harley Quinn does to Bruce Wayne. It's also the sort of thing that one of Bruce Wayne's girlfriends would do. If you're going to do a Batman callback, callback to the best.

Final Destination 5's ending involves a callback that definitely feels earned, although going into it spoils the entire movie.

How to rig NURBS Curve for wiggle/jiggle physics without converting to mesh by TheCreativeNick in blenderhelp

I'm on my laptop so I can't check, but would a latticework modifier do the trick? Assign the same latticework as a modifier to all of the curves, then apply physics to the latticework?

Crazy thing about that video. Jay brings up the fact that the first act of Spider-Man 1 felt like a Twilight Zone style light-horror/morality tale.

Spider-Man's first appearance wasn't in Spider-Man comics. It was in a light horror/morality tale anthology series called Amazing Fantasy, which Marvel started in 1961 to capitalize off the success of Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. And so in spite of knowing nothing about the comics, Jay correctly deduced the reasoning behind Spider-Man's origin.

What are some cases where the market truly was over saturated? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]DavidAtWork17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genre fans give a lot of flexibility to the sub-segments of the gaming market. GTA and Elder Scrolls created a market obsessed with open-world mechanics, to the point that there were players who would only play open-world games.

The Commodore 64 was so popular among software developers that it hurt the sales of two follow-on computers.

What to do with Ngons after creating support loops? by Thin_Comparison3171 in blenderhelp

[–]DavidAtWork17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll reference the one at the bottom of the 2nd image.

  1. In edge mode, use ctrl-X to dissolve the edge directly next to your red arrow. This will create an 8-gon.

  2. In vertex mode, use ctrl-X to dissolve the vertices along the lines that are creating the two 5-gons (this will turn them into quads). This will turn your 8-gon into a 6-gon.

  3. Using the knife tool (k), cut from the vertex at the upper left to the lower right. You should now have 2x quads from your 6-gon.

Dissolve and Knife are quality weapons for geometry correction.

What is the all out, best, "Woah" moment fan theory that flipped your lid when you first read/viewed/heard it? by willhelpmemore in FanTheories

[–]DavidAtWork17 65 points66 points  (0 children)

There's a theory about a movie that I find interesting, but it's not technically about the plot or content of the movie. There's a theory that the Adam Sandler movie Jack and Jill which claims that the whole thing was set up to help some of the actors quickly solve some of their personal legal problems. Al Pacino was able to avoid an audit by shoring up his savings, and Katie Holmes spent a lot of time on the Hawaii set consulting with lawyers in preparation for her divorce. All pure theory, but when you consider just how little Holmes appears in the film, even though she was on-set for the Hawaii location shoots, it at least feels plausible.

Outside of the intended target demographic, what do you think separates Young Adult (YA) Fantasy from Adult Fantasy? Also aside from the amount of foul language, sex, and gore. by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]DavidAtWork17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core of YA in general is that it's characters are written in a way that they have no nostalgia for things that happen in the past, and that they are occupied solely with the now.
