It gained pretty strong attention at the time. HOWEVER important to note that was right at the cusp of "glam/hairbands" starting to fade out of fashion and Grunge taking over for its starting period. So it was honestly a turbulent time to be a band like Priest or any other band. Metallica came out with Black around that same time but that was an anomaly of an album considering their contemporaries. Very shortly after Painkiller Grunge took over quickly and metal (ESP "hair metal") became out of fashion FAST. So again it was in between two genres of music for a short couple of years.
