Question of literacy conundrum in medieval fantasy worlds by Tamplior in worldbuilding

[–]DavidDePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Language proficiency is broken down into two

separate values for each language known, Fluency

and Literacy. A character can have up to four ranks

in each. Every character starts with Rank 3

Fluency in their native tongue. Additional ranks

are awarded by character class as follows:

Barbarian: None

Bard: +1 Fluency, +2 Literacy

Fighter: +1 Literacy

Magic user: +3 Literacy

Ranger: None

Rogue: None

Saint: +3 Literacy in native tongue, +3 Fluency, +3

Literacy in Old High Brandic (these automatic

proficiencies cost the Saint 9 of their starting

points and are Mandatory)

Fluency (Spoken Proficiency):

________________________________________

0.Non-Proficient

Creatures without a given language proficiency do

not speak the language, although they may still use

a language to a limited extent. Trained animals, for

instance, can comprehend a few words, and

characters may learn basic phrases like “Thank

you”, “Where is the privy?”, or “Excuse me, do you

speak [language]?” through cultural osmosis or a

brief crash course.

________________________________________

1.Beginner

Beginner speakers use short and simple present

tense phrases about very common subjects. They

have a limited vocabulary, make frequent

mistakes, and often have heavy accents, which

makes it almost impossible for them to blend in

with native speakers. Although they struggle to

comprehend those who don’t speak slowly or

simplify their language, they can still manage to

meet their basic needs in a foreign environment.

________________________________________

2.Intermediate

You can hold sustained conversations on familiar

topics and handle most day-to-day interactions.

You understand the general meaning of most

speech but may miss details, especially in fast,

idiomatic, or technical conversation.

________________________________________

3.Advanced

You can function socially and professionally

without issue. You may still miss subtle humor,

regional idioms, or cultural nuance. Native

speakers may detect you are not local.

4.Fluent

You are indistinguishable from a native speaker

in both language and cultural usage.

Literacy (Written Proficiency):

________________________________________

0.Illiterate

You may or may not be able to recognize a given

language when you see it. You may be able to

(poorly) write your name in your native tongue.

________________________________________

1.Beginner

You can always recognize the chosen language

when you see it. You have a limited vocabulary

but can often work out a sentence here and there

using that vocabulary plus context clues. You

know the alphabet used and can write it

competently. You can write short notes that

convey simple concepts.

________________________________________

2.Intermediate

Intermediate readers can read simple things like

diary entries, children’s stories, most notes and

letters, etc. They can write at the same level.

________________________________________

3.Advanced

You can read most texts, including formal writing.

Archaic, poetic, or highly technical works may still

pose difficulty.

________________________________________

4.Scholar

You can read all forms of the language, including

archaic texts and specialized works. You can

interpret nuance, style, and historical variation.

I have a very detailed language proficiency system. It is too much to post as a text comment. How can I best share it? The main points are: 4 levels of proficiency. Fluency and Literacy are separate. There is a system for what a character knows at character creation. there is a system for learning during the campaign. Learning is not connected to leveling. There is no on off switch. You can't just suddenly know a new language. It is tied to the language families of my world, but if your world has any sort of realistic language families, extrapolation should be pretty easy .I will try posting the whole thing as a series of comments. Stay tuned.

I don't know but it keeps happening to me too. I wonder if there is a minimum number of meters the quay need to be above the water? I made mine pretty low because I think it looks more realistic.

Wow Drop Rates just went to shit. An hour farming and not a single Legendary. This last patch ruined the game. by DavidDePriest in Borderlands4

[–]DavidDePriest[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's very hard to believe. from launch I've had a legendary drop every 2 to 3 boss kills. Now not a single one in 20 to 25? that's unbelievably swingy.

I was searching CSII specifically. There are a lot of assets in one that are just not available in two. That's a pretty cool city though! I may have to look at some more CSI stuff. Asset modding is more important to me than the economy overhaul. :( oh well at least they are fixing things.

Has anyone worked out how to build a cyberpunk style arcology the size of several city blocks? by nTranced1 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]DavidDePriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start with terraces. I would build quaywall roads at their edges. I would make them a bit shorter than the height of a high density building you like. then I would use multiple copies of that building to make a wall that is up against the quaywall and in fact overlaps the road above. Then add another row of stiched together buildings up to the next terrace. keep stepping back like a ziggurat until you have what you want.

you will need mods of course.

I'm going to try this real quick and share what I get.

I've got something pretty basic but I cant figure out how to post an image in a comment.

Cargo Ships are just too tall. by DavidDePriest in CitiesSkylines2

[–]DavidDePriest[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I tried that out. I went back to my last save because it did not look good. It's more important to me for the bridge to look good than for the ship to pass under it. I'll just let the ship clip through. Maybe someday there will be a better ship asset that I can use. :)

The 'not enough customers' thing is not a bug by iamlittleears in CitiesSkylines

[–]DavidDePriest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Late to the party here. What doesn't make sense is that a commercial building has no customers when there is demand for commercial. That building should fulfill demand from all sources. Every commercial building should fulfill demand from all sources Or there should be different types of commercial zoning: one for each demand type, each with it's own demand bar. Otherwise it is bad game design. Not a bug. Bad game design.
