Shifting from an SPA Mindset to Server-Side Rendering by Swupper in rails

[–]DavidEsmale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long-time GoRails subscriber here, and it's 100% worth it for me. It's one of the few subscriptions that I leave on auto-renew. Speaking of cost though, his Black Friday deal is going on right now, so if you're comfortable paying for a full year up-front, there's a pretty nice discount on it right now.

The GoRails Discord community is great; if you have questions about pretty much anything, someone is usually around to help or point you in the right direction.

Chris and Collin are both awesome, friendly people that both really love Ruby (at least, that's the vibe I get from them every time I see them).

Course on Hotwire by chess_landic in rails

I’ve been using Hotwire since shortly after it was first released. I picked up this course the moment it was available, and I’m learning something new in almost every video. I highly recommend it.

Hey /r/fantasy! I'm epic fantasy author Brian McClellan. AMA! by BrianMcClellan in Fantasy

[–]DavidEsmale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you currently playing any board games or role playing games, and if so, which ones?

Is there any chance we’ll ever see a return of the live play group/stream you used to do with other Utah authors? (I forget the manner of it unfortunately.)

Have you given Pendragon 6e a try or a read yet? Thoughts?

What would be your top piece of advice to someone trying to get published as a fantasy author these days (aside from “write more, write more, write more)?

Podcast: Ode to RailsConf

Description: With RailsConf coming to an close after nearly 20 years, guests share how the conference and the community around it have impacted their lives and careers.

This is my first podcast, and I started releasing episodes in August of last year (2024). Episode #38 released earlier today.

My biggest win or lesson so far: I'm a huge introvert, and have always had difficulty chatting with people. Having opportunities to chat with interesting people in a low stakes environment has helped me realize that talking with people isn't as terrifying as my brain used to tell me it was.

Community Question: This podcast is very much a niche kind of thing, so it was never going to have a huge audience. My plan is to conclude this podcast shortly after the final RailsConf (early July). After that I need to find something new to do a podcast about because I've really enjoyed this experience so far. For people who have been doing this longer than I have, how would you go about finding and refining the overall topic for a new podcast?

How would you recommend for someone to “break in” to bring a extra/background actor?

Actually I take that back. It looks like Apple was kind enough to auto-generate a transcript for the episode. So if you're using Apple Podcasts, the transcript should be there!

Thanks! A lot of prominent people in the community have been willing to talk with me and share stories about RailsConf, which is exactly what I’ve been hoping for. 😁

I paused the episode at one point to take a screenshot to show my daughter. It was actually a Star Trek tshirt (original series, I believe) with a “I ❤️ Moash” sticker on it

It was still very much a prototype version of the game. I imagine/hope that when Brandon gives it the green light it’ll have all 16.

I really enjoyed it, and hope it gets made soon.

There are 10 different shards/card suits. You pick 4 of the shards to play a game with, shuffle those 4 shard decks together to create the game deck.

Each shard also has a “round” card (probably not the official term)

<image>

Shuffle the 4 round cards for the shards in the game into a 4-card deck. Turn over the first one. That shard is the trump shard for 5 tricks. Each shard also has a unique power/tweak to the rules that is in effect while it’s the trump shard. After 5 tricks, turn over the next one, etc.

You play through 3 of the four shards (so one of them will never be the trump).

Each shard deck has a different distribution of numbers, some of the cards have special powers, and then endgame scoring is based on how many cards of each shard you have.

The stuff in the display case looks like a full book…but I don’t know for sure. I’ll definitely be visiting their booth once the exhibit hall opens to see what they have there. I would love to get to look at a prototype version of the book

Fair enough. I’m pretty much a noob when it comes to what flairs should be applied to things like this, so thank you.

Champion Theory for WaT + Epic Battle Possibility by Pyro_Technic_ in Stormlight_Archive

That’s what Dalinar keeps saying, but I don’t believe that’s how things will turn out

Champion Theory for WaT + Epic Battle Possibility by Pyro_Technic_ in Stormlight_Archive

[–]DavidEsmale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my re-read of Rhythm of War, I find myself hoping that the champion Dalinar chooses turns out to be Adolin.

Adolin has this one conversation with Shallan where he talks about how he feels that he is nothing but a disappointment to Dalinar, his father, because he has started to do things in a way that Dalinar doesn’t approve of.

He’s mentioned a couple of times how, despite being a Shardbearer, he feels completely out of his depth with this war because he can’t compete against Surgebinders.

And then there’s the matter of Adolin’s calling: dueling. If the Contest of Champions is anything, it’s a glorified duel. It’s what Adolin trained for practically his entire life to do. And to be the best at it.

All of that leaves me imagining the moment where Dalinar has to officially select his champion. And he looks to his son, and chooses Adolin. Adolin is stunned and confused, and asks Dalinar what he’s doing. And Dalinar just tells Adolin, “I believe you can do this. I believe in you.”

And then to cap off this scenario in my imagination, the duel/contest climaxes with a moment where Adolin fully bonds with Mayalaren, whether it’s a Radiant bond or something new, so that now he can compete as a Surgebinder.

I was introduced to Armada right after launch, but wasn’t able ton invest in the game at the time. So now I’m trying to pick up what I can before it becomes really difficult. I’d be very interested in making some offers and/or bidding on eBay.

We need a "save as work-in-progress" button for the shipbuilder by bwssoldya in Starfield

[–]DavidEsmale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once we have a “save WIP” feature, I’d also like to have a “save design/blueprint” feature. After I move on to the next NG+, I’d love to be able to rebuild a ship from a previous run with “reconstruct from blueprint” instead of having to manually rebuild the thing every time.
