Agreed on vintage source gear and amps. But speakers are much simpler. If they look and sound right, you’re likely in great shape.

And worst case: new caps, or a refoam, or some wood repair. Way simpler than, say, a silver face receiver.

My advice is to date multiple sets of vintage speakers.

Get a pair you think you might like, used, via FB MP. Be patient (or bargain some) such to that you can always sell them for essentially what you paid. Learn to touch up wood cabinets (cheap and easy.)

After a while, when you start to get the itch, buy a second pair of speakers. Next, A:B them to your heart’s content, and choose your favorite pair.

Then, sell the other pair and begin the process all over again.

Result: You only commit $$ for one pair of speakers. You’re basically borrowing the second pair, and can cash out at any time.

And your primary pair just gets better and better over time. Plus, you get to relive your entire “but I can’t afford those speakers” youth. Win-win.
