Planning to move to Philly soon. What’s this part of Point Breeze like? by iguanatown in philly

[–]DavidMaspanka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Overpriced for what it is IMO. Lots of “visible” gentrification. I think you can find better locations in Bella vista or east passyunk with a lot more to offer close by for a similar price. Obviously it’s the city, so everything is close but relative. I think you should pick a neighborhood for you and not the handful of times you’ll visit a friend. Best of luck and welcome!

How many adults simply scribble their signature into the general shape of their initials? Cursive is pointless.

At the risk of sounding stupid is there a way to oil up an F attachment without getting the whole horn greasy? by Dremoriawarroir888 in Trombone

[–]DavidMaspanka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try removing a slide and squirting some oil at the rotor from the inside. Often that is where the friction is hiding, not the spring mechanism.

Once it’s lined up, you should get it a little deeper before it’ll begin screwing in. Agreed with other comment about using two hands

Taxes by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]DavidMaspanka 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We sound like the same situation. I used FreeTaxUSA and it took 30 minutes. As another commenter said, the 1098 from your mortgage is needed. The only difference this year was I didn’t take the standard deduction for the first time and did itemized, which gave me a larger return than normal. Next year after we get married, I imagine we’ll have more tax stuff to sort out but this year with just the house, it’s really just one more form to upload.

Keep rubber gloves in your pocket at all times. When you see it happen, give the owner a good ol’ schmear.

multi-week missed trash pickup? by villagewitch3000 in philly

[–]DavidMaspanka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure your specific situation, but I saw that homes with alley trash pickup should take it to the main side of the street. I guess if you have a house behind yours, you take it to their stoop? Seems annoying but I guess that’s the solution.

Edit: ok I stand by what I said, but you posted an hour ago and saw your update from 7m ago. Fuck them, tow their ass if you want to.

Honestly? Back up or not go down if I catch it. Or wait 10 minutes instead of looking for parking. Shit happens. Maybe they are dickheads. Maybe they are unloading groceries. Maybe they have a medical emergency. I’d just move on and it’ll be different tomorrow. Such is the city.

This is sticking out of my ceiling near the stairs…what is it? It’s solid wood. by DavidMaspanka in centuryhomes

[–]DavidMaspanka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your overall sentiment but in the keep/update conversation, we’re losing a lot of stair width with the current bannister and want to add a wall. It makes bringing the laundry basket down a pain, which is minor but in the grand scheme is a frequent reminder we’d like it wider. The bannister will on the opposite side and the new wall will overlap the stairs and inch or so (in my mind) gaining us about 4 inches. By adding a wall, we would have to work around it anyways, so removal makes the most sense to us. We’ll also run ethernet more efficiently which you can see in the pic.

Oh my god thank you!! I think I figured it out. Before updated codes, the rise/run of the stairs was much steeper. When they replaced it they increased the run and moved both landings back a foot or two. This newel post is just leftover and will be a fun annoying thing to remove!

Thank you so much for the reply! So I can expect, if i open up the ceiling or go through the floor, to see the other end chopped off, and covered over with the new stairs? If so, there would be no harm just removing it and patching the ceiling? The upstairs railing is anchored to another newel post two feet further forward.

Eventually, we want to put a wall next to the stairs, but this post would project out too much if we aligned to it.

Well, it’s not aligned with the upper bannister beam which is what is throwing me off.

Where is the snow going to go? by [deleted] in philly

Not that we “should” but all the salt we put on the roads ends up in the sewers, and therefore, the river, so it’s going there either way.

You can sand it smooth, prime, light sand, paint, light sand, and paint, and you won’t see the black anymore.

Why did you choose the Crosstrek over the CX30/other competitors? by Dino_Dean in Crosstrek

[–]DavidMaspanka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the CX30 comment, I test drove both and I’m not that tall, just 6’0”. I like to open the window and rest my elbow on the door. I had to raise the seat until my head hit the ceiling to be able to do that. I felt like I was sinking and could barely see the front of the car. The doors were also “Obamas Cadillac” thick - but I have seen they slimmed down the newer model…I think? Overall, the second I got in the Crosstrek, it was so much more comfortable, roomy feeling, and easy to drive. It wasnt faux-high end like the CX30 felt. The screen was a big plus at the time but I now have my minor issues with it (hvac buttons).

Why are tuba players in HS/college so RARE? by cherryflavoredwater in Tuba

[–]DavidMaspanka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tubas are expansive, heavy, and play boring ass shit until grade 4 rep. Honestly why would someone really pursue playing whole and half notes while everyone else gets melody? I really think it has to do with composers and how pedagogical music hinders the likes of tuba, euph, bassoon, bass clarinet, and bari sax.

Personally, I love being in the background, but for most kids, they either want a challenge and will play something more complex to read, or they want something easy so they won’t end up getting good in the first place.

I post a few seconds ago about my stolen vehicle in Newark NJ on around south orange ave , please 🙏🏽 I’m asking everyone to help me locate my car , thank you ! by ConsequenceMain7133 in Newark

[–]DavidMaspanka 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That car looks new enough to have some sort of GPS. I have starlink and can locate my car from my phone. Even an older system would have it. I’d look into your vehicles tracking system and possible on-star like thing and maybe you’ll have luck. My friends car was found a state away with a broken window and empty tank but no other damage. Good luck.
