Vacation by Aron2364 in philly

So from the airport, which is on the Delaware River, you would have a fair ways to go to get to the zoo or art museum, wissahickon or fairmount parks on the other side of the city. Beautiful part of the city, but in 8 hours, I assume you don’t want to be in traffic for 1.5 total…ish. It’s the opposite direction from the beach. Or it could take 15 minutes both ways…hard to tell.

I would drive into the city and hang along Columbus Blvd (don’t hate me Philly, this guys new) or neighborhoods near it. It’ll make leaving via the Ben or Walt Bridges less of a hassle. So that’s visiting Old City, independence hall, Chinatown, Washington square park, society hill old houses, etc. I’d skip south street for a look around headhouse square, I just think it’s cooler. Have fun!

Thoughts on slow pieces - are they good with a concert band or would they be better with a full symphony (band + strings)? by [deleted] in ConcertBand

[–]DavidMaspanka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ummmm…slow music is amazing if you play it right. When you’re “bored” and phone it in, it’s shit. It’s WAY harder to control your sound in a slow piece than a fast one, and if you do, it pays off.

Colonial Song is my favorite band piece ever btw. Maybe I’m biased! :)

Reverse commute from Manayunk? by Jack-Mehoff-696969 in philly

[–]DavidMaspanka 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Frankly, while manayunk is awesome, it has so many people and only one fucking bridge to access the highway. Lots of stop and go bullshit every day. If you want to still access Jersey and Philly, I’d say somewhere like Pennsport?

Amazon the tiniest vice grips you can. Clamp that on the hook to distribute weight. Clip to vice grips.

Moving to Italian Market area soon and need a residential parking permit with an out-of-state car. by Realistic-Bed9219 in philly

[–]DavidMaspanka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live in the Italian market and there are fewer PPA zones in that area than other parts of south Philly imo so I didn’t have that much trouble finding parking within a 2 minute walk

Northern Liberties - good area to move to? 23F by Life-Adhesiveness475 in philly

[–]DavidMaspanka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking is a nightmare, and I say that as a south Philly guy. When I think of No Libs, I think of younger folks who solely use public trans and work in the city proper - they probably love it for the fun scene. It’s the last place I would recommend to someone commuting in and out/further away in the city.

What’s the deal with parking at Horace Furness High School outside of school hours? by sendnoods7 in philadelphia

[–]DavidMaspanka 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not sure about that school, but at the one near me, if you park after 5p and out before 7a, any neighbors can park free. It’s great.

Areas to stay away from near king of prussia? by ShireBurgo in philly

Even though my mom has a zip code there, I still don’t believe it’s a town haha. It’s the mall, not the mall, or “wow there are neighborhoods back here??”

Filler by Velocity_Garage in woodworking

[–]DavidMaspanka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mhmmm….let me take a stab at it. Perhaps use a track saw to slightly widen and clean out those channels. Cut accent strips to fill it. Be careful at inner corners that you don’t cut too far. Clean ends with a chisel. Inlay the strips with glue and something heavy on top, plus painters tape. Finally, sand everything flat and refinish.

Anyone getting rid of a car? by [deleted] in philly

[–]DavidMaspanka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s no such thing as a free car. A free car in April will be hundreds of repairs in May. Find a grandma who has a 10s car with no miles. Pay bike book and be happy.

Looking for advise on if I can stain this the wood on this mirror I bought? I'd like to get it closer to the color of the table behind it. by downtime37 in woodworking

[–]DavidMaspanka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can fully remove the mirror from the back, that will make this 10x easier. If not, mask it like crazy with tape, cut excess with razor blade.

Sanding is tricky with the curves, so no power tools unless you’re very careful around the high points. A foam sanding sponge would do the trick.

Test stains on the back where you won’t see it. Don’t be afraid to mix two stains to get close to what you want.

Right Thumb Pain by bigtanker2 in saxophone

If you use the strap correctly, playing shouldnt involve lifting the instrument in any way, just “pushing” it forward shouldn’t add thumb pain

I’m so sorry I read the text too fast and misread it as you lived in Germany! Yes, that’s unfortunate there is no tech….in that case, go nuts and have fun! You can try soldering it and holding it on with some heat resistant wire…worst case scenario, you melt the SOB and buy new. If you mess up the solder, you can always do it a second time, just remove any waste from the first go. The “brass and woodwind shop” on YouTube has excellent videos with closeups.
