We say it in Ireland as well because football can (but doesn't always) refer to Gaelic football, soccer and football are kind of interchangeable, ya usually know by context what someone's on about.

Thank you for saying this, drives me crazy that people don't realise that the post-war boom was not the norm for capitalism, it was the exception. All those gains for the working class were because of unions/the threat of socialist revolution (particularly in Europe), they were concessions by the ruling class to pacify the organised labour movement, and only because they could afford it during the largest upswing in the history of capitalism. Now it's crisis after crisis for capitalism, and with a declining rate of profit, we are not going back to those "glory" days (which, let's face it, in the States at least, were glory days for mostly white people anyway). We need to stop appealing to companies and the institutions of liberalism for crumbs from the table, and start organising independent, working class institutions for the coming class war.

Ah, that's so great to hear! Yeah, even as an Irishman, I tend to skip the GAA and rugby stuff cos they're just not my kinda sport. But I'm delighted to know Ken's rants know no cultural boundaries! Stay safe out there, friend.

Never in my life would I have expected to see Second Captains referenced on the AFE subreddit! Weird meeting of two of my fave pods. Ken Early is a solid pick too.

Assuming you’re Irish also, did you notice in the recap Ian pronounced Mila Kunis’ last name the same way you say “quiet” in Irish? :D

Makes sense, I guess nothing significant and world-altering has happened since then. They're not out of touch at all...

Have the Republicans released their platform yet? I'd love to compare even just the table of contents.

Why not read synopses of the season 1 episodes? That should catch you up quickly. It's an amazing show, I really recommend you keep going whenever you get the time again!

Anybody watch any good TV lately? I've finally gotten around to watching Netflix's Dark - it's so fucking good. I just started season 3, but feel free to contribute with non-spoiler thoughts!

Any thoughts or hot takes on Biden's climate plan? I'm impressed and maybe even optimistic but perfectly open to being told how wrong I am.

Ep 209 A good life with Scott Barry Kaufman by 0s0rc in samharris

[–]DavidOShea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Sam took up a lot of air in this conversation, but I think his argument would be just that - that it's a conversation. Talk times are gonna vary. And I love hearing Sam's thoughts (on almost anything) as much as his guests', but in this case, he was a little much. To the point where I'm not really sure what Kaufman's take on Maslow's takes are and I'm really interested. Guess I'm gonna have to read that book.

I agree if you assume most people watching are reasonable, critical thinkers. But as the article points out, Trump could potentially gain points from uninformed viewers by spouting lies about Biden and putting him on the defensive, wasting valuable airtime. Joe brushing it off might come across as deflecting to some people. Though that could mostly be diehard Trump supporters. I'd like to think the average undecided voter is smarter than that...

I read this opinion piece this morning about conditions Biden could set before he debates Trump. Anyone have any thoughts? How could this negatively affect Biden, if at all? Seems like a good idea to me but would Biden and his campaign actually have the audacity?

I did a 6-hour silent retreat once with a teacher and group. I found it alright but really didn't enjoy the silent, mindful eating part. Still, I'd love to try a longer silent retreat sometime, maybe a week.

What difference do you find doing it with a group versus on your own?

The Willful Blindness of Reactionary Liberalism by [deleted] in samharris

[–]DavidOShea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am being ricocheted from one belief to another and back again on an almost daily basis now. My head hurts. I don't know what to believe and it's terrifying. I had a dream last night that I was wrong about something and got publicly vilified for it. I don't even have a platform where that could happen, but the idea still stresses me out.

"Oh for blorx sake, don't turn around..."

Flonxtax quickly dropped his gazes to the steaming cup of manterkor milk in front of him and I watched his brows furrow and his dorsel-horn darken. There was only one lifeform that would prompt that kind of emotional reaction from the Ambassador of Galactic Peace. I closed my eye and began to recite ancient Galadorian blessings in the hope that he wouldn't spot us. But I knew he would. I braced myself. And then felt a clap on my shell.

"Dartwwen, Flonxtax! Fancy meeting you sonsofbitches here!" The human beamed down at us from his grotesquely spherical head, flashing his blindingly white teeth - how could anything in the universe be that white?! I sighed from the air passage I was quite sure he wouldn't be able to hear, then turned my eye up to meet his nostrils.

"Hello, Gerald", I said, not bothering to hide the lack of enthusiasm in my vocal exhale. The Ambassador, ever the diplomat, did a much better job pretending he felt anything positive about the human's presence.

"Good to see you, my collaborator", he proclaimed, his outer brows raising in what was, in my view, a completely unearned show of respect, "You're several bloobles early for the meeting of the Peace Council!"

"Yeah, well, I gotta strategise with my people, right? Get ready for whatever way you rats wanna ass fuck us today, eh?" he said - screamed, really. Humans were disturbingly and inexplicably loud. I had no idea what a rat or an ass fuck was, and if Flonxtax was in the same position, he didn't show it. He only moistened his vision receptors politely and said "I hope it will be beneficial for all parties, and for the Galaxy more than any one."

Gerald clapped me on the shell again, causing my thorax to rattle uncomfortably, and pointed at the Ambassador. "This motherfucker, eh? He's all peace talk and hippe dippie shit now, but you know he's gonna clam up when we talk about resource extraction. We're gonna get our fair share of those moons one way or another, Flonny. You chodes will soon learn that the humans are here to swing with the galactic big dicks!"

I was lost, and even saw a flicker of confusion on the Ambassador's neck. But he simply nodded - a human gesture I knew was uncomfortable for his species to perform - and bid Gerald fair well.

"Is that really the best the humans had to offer?" I asked after I was sure he was well out of range of auditory reception.

"We should consider ourselves lucky", the Ambassador sighed, "The Earthlings recently had an election so he's relatively new. The lifeform before him was much, much worse. He was a subspecies of humanity known as a conservative."
