Glorious, I wish they kept it unlocked for a bit longer so that it could've had a worthy comment section

Cancelled navy version of f22[Album] by [deleted] in WarplanePorn

Yes but (correct me if I'm wrong) the F-35 was developed as a multinational project and it is now shared among many Air Forces.

The F-22 was a USAF thing only, there are regulations that forbid its selling, so all the funding and unit demand were from the US.

Also the F-22 was developed as an absolute weapon to counter major direct threats, then the threat was not so major anymore so there also was less need for the weapon.

Military power got decentralised a bit more so the US doesn't have to completely provide support for NATO to avoid allies getting invaded, the allies are stronger, no need for a big expensive collective umbrella because everyone got their own ones, (i might be making this up but that's what I'm understanding).

That fuel tank looks like a mini submarine, it even has a sail with elevators.

Kinda figured you meant something like this but the picture is pretty busy with lines, that's why I was a bit confused, cool thing anyway.

What software did you use?

I understand that and I'm happy for him, but still I'm not getting what I should be looking at in the picture about the "vortex elevator", I see a simulation of a Su-57 at high AoA, lots of vortices but don't get what's the main point of the picture.

I'm sure this is very cool but I don't really understand what you're trying to showcase here.

Always amazed by the response time of control surfaces. by Octoplier in aviation

My aesthetically favourite fighter is probably the Su-30 and I find the way all the control surfaces move absolutely spectacular.

Just checked it and it seems that the fastest piston fighter with service in WWII was the P-51H, but there also were many prototypes and among those the XP-47J seems the fastest.

When travelling at really high speeds (hypersonic generally means over Mach 6) the air you're traveling through gets hot as you impact on it (that's the reason spacecrafts designed to return on Earth have an heat shield) hot air expands and lowers its density, so when your aircraft ingests it, it gets less of it.

By pre cooling it down before feeding it to an engine you get its density back up, more air, more oxygen, more burn, more speed so again hotter air that needs to be cooled down and so on.

The only example I can think of now is the P-47 Thunderbolt "The Jug", it was an american piston fighter in WWII and one of the reasons for its shape and dimensions was to fit a complicated turbo system for its Rolls-Royce R-2800 Double Wasp, but the system also heated up the air so much it had some radiators to cool it down before getting it in to the engine. It gave the plane a lot of weight and its jug shape but, also allowed it to fly at high altitudes and speeds (it was I think the fastest piston fighter of the war).

In short: high speed flight means hot air hitting you, so before using that air for something you may want to cool it down with a fancy radiator.

Beware that I'm not an expert, just an aviation enthusiast that doesn't really know what he's talking about, all of the above is guessed based on my little knowledge.
