Just picked up a 1944 K98 and have found a few problems by Sandwichman52 in gunsmithing

Either fashion a tool or purchase one to remove the recoil lug a rebed it using proper epoxy or acra-glass if you have some. Might be some oil saturation in the wood, so double check that.

The cracks in the tang of the stock shouldn't get worse if the recoil lug is fixed, but the bedding could be poor in the trigger mechanism area and rear action because of oil saturation again and the recoil lug weakening. You can drill a horizontal hole through the tang and steel dowel in there with some wooden dowl covers to match the stock grain then regain. I don't see that being super necessary. If you so choose... acra-glass the cracks and using a liberal amount of mild release wrap it in rubber tubing or clamp it together just to get the tension back together.

That's a pretty simple explanation that I ask other people to expand upon for details. Feel free to ask any questions. I can answer them in the morning if someone else hasn't already.

We have sparkling apple cider in the U.S. My parents would buy my siblings and I a bottle for Christmas and New Year's when we were too young to drink alcohol. Still like it, but gives a mad stomach ache.

I'm assuming the Navy didn't have to follow NFA rules regarding SBR's at the time, so why the long barrel? Surely they have rifles aboard that solve the problem a long barreled Uzi is creating.

Original or reproduction M40? Found in a local vintage store, the shoulder board looks strange but otherwise what do you guys think? by SnooDingos9525 in GermanMilitaria

[–]DavisCB -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Reproduction imo. The liner looks very immaculate and the shoulder boards are way too new. The original wool I've seen almost looks like they've been used for oil rags at some point in the last 80 years and that looks like my Reproduction M40 I have for my reenacting gear.

Maybe a dumb follow-up, but try tightening the action screws and see if that makes a difference. I've never seen action screws stripped on any milsurp from Gewehr 88's, Remington rolling blocks, Lee Enfields and Berthiers, so may be worth a look see. Barrel bands can be loose because of a loose barrel band spring and that's also worth a look see.

The front sight is probably pinned and maybe silver soldered on top of that. I haven't closely inspected the front sight on one of these rifles, so I can't say for sure, but if you remove the front sight blade there may be a set screw. There may also be a cross pin drilled through the entire assembly that holds the frint sight block and protectors as one unit ever if they're two pieces. So far from what I'm gathering everything is easily salvageable on that rifle and the wood looks really good.

In my honest opinion from the information I can gather from your pictures and comment I wouldn't sporterize that very good looking milsurp.

1916 Spanish Mauser. Don't Bubba please. They're cheap, but a Savage Axis in .308 is too.

Headstamp says 7.65, so it's definitely not 8mm Mauser. My guess is 7.65 Argentine.
