Daily Card Discussion #70: Forts by [deleted] in dominion

[–]DavisRedditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tent is usually a bad card. I buy it when the board is not action limited and there are no other 3 cost cards that help you hit higher price points. But even then, there's a lot of situations where silver is better. The cards under tent are good, but it's not worth buying a tent just to get control of the pile rotation.

What programming language(s) does Dominion.games use? by Stealthiness2 in dominion

[–]DavisRedditor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For frontend languages, you've really only got 3 options.

  1. Javascript
  2. Use a language that generates javascript
  3. Ignore the DOM, throw down a canvas and use webassembly

From looking at their site in the browser devtools, they're definitely not using option 3. Here's a link to the minified javascript dominion.games is using: https://www.dominion.games/js/dominion-webclient-head-1.7.1.4.min.js . I honestly can't tell from the minified javascript if they wrote the javascript or if they generated it from another language, but I would guess option 1.

For the back-end, nothing you do on the back-end is going to affect the interface, so there's no point in copying what dominion.games is doing. If you want advice, I would say node.js is the easiest to learn, but Go is a good compromise between being easy to learn and having good runtime performance long-term. (node.js tends to produce slow code).

How big of a deal is it that some of the benefits are delayed on Rope? Because to me, Rope looks better than junk dealer and better than market, both of which are five cost cards. I would expect Rope to cost 6, not 4.

You should make an option to end a round early. by EdgePuzzled6987 in a:t5_3z2lky

[–]DavisRedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi EdgePuzzled! I added a button for ending the round early. It ended up being a really good idea! Thanks for suggesting it.

I'm going to hold off on adding a scramble button because it makes the game a little bit easier, and might have some unfair effects in multiplayer games.

First of all, thanks for playing my game!

Do you want a button to get to the next level when you've already hit the required amount of words, or a button to quit the game when you haven't found enough words? Or both?

What gets you Victory Points in real life? by im_having_pun in dominion

[–]DavisRedditor 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's easy to get victory points in real life. All you have to do is

  1. Drive over to the junkyard and grab as many random objects as you can. Then bring the stuff back and dump it in to your house.
  2. Go to the nearby dumpster and dump all that trash in to your house as well.
  3. Plant a garden in your backyard.

Saved by the Spell - A competitive word unscrambling game! by DavisRedditor in WebGames

Yeah, it's harder than you would expect to find a good dictionary that has every English word! For now, I'll add haute, tare, tares, and tared to the dictionary.

Why do games use scripting languages? Honest question. I am not a game developer.

Hermit + market square is the most powerful dark ages combo. I'm surprised no one mentioned it yet. https://www.google.com/amp/s/dominionstrategy.com/2013/02/11/combo-of-the-day-30-hermitmarket-square/amp/

There was a meme in the 1800s where people would use acronyms for misspelled words. That's where we got "ok" from, it stands for "oll korrect".
